The assortment of Beef, Pork, and Chicken Meat is transferred to a pan where it is shredded by hand. Vinegar, Soy Sauce, Onion, and Chili Peppers are added to the pan and the meat is boiled for 5-10 minutes. Drain the meat. In a pan, fry together: Oil, Garlic, Onion, and Chili Peppers. Next, add the boiled meat back into the pan and season with Salt, Pepper and Oyster Sauce. After mixing, let the meat sit untouched in the pan for 15-20 min until the bottom has a crunchy crust. Serve.

The sorted meat is washed with water, then boiled, then drained. For the marination: Onion, Garlic, Soy Sauce, Sprite, MSG, Pineapple Juice is mixed with the meat. It is then fried in hot oil for 5 min. Serve. (Fried Type)
Meat is sorted, then washed with water, then boiled, then drained. Sautee Oil, Garlic, and the meat. Next, mix in: Sugar, Pineapple Juice, Soy Sauce, Vinegar, MSG, and Sprite. Mix and let cook for a few minutes. Add in Smashed Crackers/Biscuits and Milk Powder. Cook for a few more minutes. Serve. (Adobo Type)

So I'm South African but spent a few years abroad working & travelling - I remember watching a documentary about PagPag and at the time I had some filipino colleagues and few close friends of mine at the time were also filipino. I was pretty much in disbelief about pagpag until they told me it is indeed true. One thing I have learned about filipinos are that they are never ashamed of their upbringing,circumstances and just in general where they come from. From the slums or not they'll proudly show you pictures and tell you about their lives. They are very hardworking people and often when they work abroad they hardly save even a dollar for themselves, it all goes to their families. I must however mention there are some who come from more upper class families but still they choose to work to earn an honest living. Until you've met filipinos and actually gotten to know them you'll not truly understand their type of resilience and perserverance. Its actually really inspiring. This video made me tear up because I remember how the filipino crew at work always used to say "lets eat" ...they'll always extend an invite to join them when they all sit down together for dinner. Some of my fav filipino dishes are chicken adobo, bicol express, pancit and then this sweet cake/scone like thing with cheese ontop... yum! Those are only a few lol. May this documentary be an eyeopener and let us never forget to thank God everyday for all his wonderful blessings big or small. God bless everyone in 🇵🇭 Much love!

Im not philipino but chinese. My parents both grew up in poverty and at the tail end of Mao’s reign. Hearing their stories was always heart breaking and how they had to come to the United States out of pure desperateness. They still struggled when they got here but established a solid foundation and a new life thru hard work. I never truly appreciated what my parents have done until I became a young adult and understood what they have truly done for me and my sister. Quite emotional writing this out because I know that both of my parents knew what it felt like to be hungry. God bless those people for their grit and resilience.

Mao's reign was good for the first 5 years. Had he stopped there, he would have been a hero. They say 2-6 million chinese died because he pushed people to making metals instead of food and they died of starvation. This happened because China was invaded left and right and the humiliation forced Mao to an act of desperation, to which the people had to pay the cost. He was afraid of getting invaded again and getting China humiliated. I wonder if he split the workforce into two, (half for food and half for metal works) the chinese people would not have suffered.

I believe every person has that resilience. Some people don't have the opportunities to escape really bad political situations. Or they stay for reasons, usually family. If you ever had to struggle and be hungry you understand the drive to get out that situation. They did not do it for you specifically. They just did what they had too to survive as long as they can. Once here there is no going back. But in America they had the opportunity to be a respected contributing member of society and actually get rewarded for it. when the only other choice is to be homeless in America. Which compared to the Philippines or China is probably a cake walk. It's really not a sacrifice. Don't ever let your parents guilt you over what they went through. Your American. No one in America especially the homeless go hungry. Lots of families do. But not many homeless they have the time to visit the shelters and food banks.

Gutter oil 2.0 , China's next Food scandal . Toxic pre-cooked meals in School Lunches. Chinese schools are serving a new type of lunch: pre-cooked meals. Parents found out how much preservatives are in this. This type of food is worse than that, they may be indicating a conditioning for the people to be used to rationing and going back to the cultural revolution. And there's another issue with food safety in China, can we really trust them?

I've had the privilege of interacting with Filipino people both in New Zealand and the Philippines, and I must say, they are among the most wholesome and friendly individuals I've ever met. Despite their circumstances, they maintain a positive attitude, as highlighted in this video. As a Samoan, I often get mistaken for being Filipino, and I always take it as a huge compliment.

I'm filipino, this is indeed true, I can't even watch this video. It will breaks my heart and cry. I never experience to eat pagpag but I experience not having enough food , hunger when I was a young. Even my parents used to tell us how poor they were. Im thankful and grateful for my life right now , I have a stable job and I can buy food for myself and for my family. I am thankful to Almighty God for the life that we have right now, we no longer poor .

This hits home. I am a 2nd generation Filipino American. My mom came to the Unites States with her Nursing Degree that my Grandmother and Grandfather paid for through hard work like these people in happyland, but deeper in the provinces. My mom used to tell me stories when she was a kid the ONLY thing they would have to eat was rice. Meat was merely a luxury. It was also not uncommon to go to sleep crying because of hunger. My mom is now retired after being a critical care nurse for 35+ years with millions in retirement from sheer heavy hours of work (2 full time jobs and a per diem) She always maxed her 401Ks every year. My brother and I followed in our mother's footsteps and are both RNs with families of our own. Whenever I think about where our family started from, it is utterly insane how our family line literally came from the very same similar circumstances as these people. It all started from the effort that my grandparents put in to crawl out of this type of poverty. I couldn't be more grateful and appreciative of where I came from.

It breaks my heart knowing people eat pagpag, while I’m standing in front of my fridge and tossing out food that’s been sitting in my fridge over a week, and tossing out “expired” pantry staples that are probably still good. It’s amazing that it helps some of the pagpag stall owners send their kids to school. We are blinded by what we already have, forgetting how the less fortunate survive. You are so brave trying the food and showcasing it in a positive light for them. Definitely a story of resourcefulness and resilience. Thank you.

I've met Sonny in person in Vietnam when he was just starting out and I've traveled to the Philippines many times. He's killing it now! Man, this was a powerful episode! Like they were saying people don't hide the facts of where pag pag comes from. This video isn't hiding nothing by just showing the natural beauty of the islands but by showing the normal day to day life in the slums it gives a glimpse into the beauty of the Filipino spirit. The Filipino people taught me a lot. They are People who do more with less. Whether rich or poor Filipinos can teach the world a thing or two about being a survivor and being resilient. Poverty doesn't define anyone-- I don't care where they are from. ❤🇵🇭

It's the same here in America. Rent and prices of everything are through the roof. It's disgusting. I live paycheck to paycheck and have thought about what I would do if I had to live out of my car if I couldn't make rent anymore. It's a horrible world we live in now. @PortnoiJ

This channel can teach you more about the world in one episode than most schools and colleges can teach you in multiple years. This episode made me extremely sad, but it also made me realize how insignificant my problems are and how fortunate most of us are. My heritage is Filipino but being born in America I feel so disconnected to my roots. I am 6:28 in and already feel sick to my stomach. Not because of the food but because of how the Filipino government treats its own citizens. No one should ever have to eat garbage, ever. Next year will be my first time visiting the Philippines and I am more excited to see these areas than Palawan and other resorts. I want to see the real, the raw, and the present. @@LeoFig23 Yes they do. Those people eating pagpag aren't native or locals of Manila. They're from the provinces living in their farms but they chose to move to Manila (without an actual plan or job). They thought that it's all rainbows and sunshine in Manila and that it is the land of opportunities. Manila is only the land of opportunities for the skilled and unlazy. If they don't want to be poor, they better go back home to their provinces and farm. They can sell the produce for profit or eat it themselves. That's how to not be poor

They chose this lifestyle. During my time in the Philippines. The government did provide them housing for them to relocate. But they prefer to stay in the slum and they rented out their house provided by the government.

Other KZfaq channels feature pagpag in their "poverty porn" videos for the click-bait and shock value but they never explain the story behind the poverty, the reason for the desperation. Sonny does a good job here in exposing the uncomfortable truth in a respectful and informative way that does not shame or disrespect both the viewers and the people in the video.

@@cosmicreaverkassadin1143nope. it's shameful but the feeling of shame isn't imposed by this style of documentation whereas other vloggers would subtly tell you to be shameful instead of letting you understand until you feel the shame yourself. also, it's not the food that is shameful but the situation. it's shameful to be living in a country where there are people who are poor enough and desperate enough to eat possibly expired/spoiled food. it just means something is inherently wrong with the government and the society for economy to be this low.

When you have little, you do what you can to survive. Many of us live in a comfortable bubble separate from those who sadly have little or nothing. Even in the USA we have homeless camps with people that dig through dumpsters to find their next meal. Don't belittle those that so what they can to survive. Hardship is hardship no matter the language spoken or from the land you live. Sonny thank you for being so respectful in this video as you are in all of them, but this one needed an extra dose of compassion. You truly are a gift to humanity.

I'm not sure what the situation of the homeless in your country is, but these people in my country are a burden. Our government give them cash instead of jobs, because they demand cash instead of jobs. They complain that life is hard, yet choose to have 8-15 children that they can't afford to feed then go on rallies to demand for Ayuda (financial aid). The government spends billions on housing projects for them, which they then sell for a quick cash and then go back squatting. While the middle class would spend 30 years paying the government for a housing loan which we can barely afford. I lived in a squatters area for months and saw unemployed able bodied men sit, play cards and drink all day instead of looking for a job. A lot would beg on the streets then spit on you if you don't have anything to give. The list goes on. I have no sympathy for these people.

Yeah and many are still upset with their lives despite all of their luxuries that others can only dream of having. I’m guilty of this myself, seeing the deep state of poverty others live in makes me appreciate more of what I have, I take for granted things that are actually a privilege in this world.

At least in the Philippines they do not make toxic fake food unlike in China. Pagpag is still considered safe by most sellers who meticulously prepare them . Toxic food. Everything is fake in China. To all non Filipino viewers out here, I just want to make clear that this it NOT common practice in the Philippines but as you can see in the video, this “pag pag” food does exist in the area shown on the video and it is absolutely shocking that people living in so much poverty have to resort to this type of food just to survive. I’m Filipino by birth and I wasn’t aware of this until a few years ago when I saw a documentary video about this on KZfaq. No one deserves to live like this but this is one of the many sad realities in Philippines. Anyone who is fortunate to be able to eat “normal” food should be grateful everyday. Count your blessings and be grateful everyday. 😢

i landed my first hotel job in Philippines back in 2002 , I saw for the first time that left overs from breakfast ,lunch and dinner from the buffet restaurant was segregated specially and stowed in chilled garbage room then a collector will come to pick it up. i don't feel bad when i watch this but its the resilience of my fellowmen who is willing to survive. your story telling is truly balanced.

There is a law for that authored by Richard Gordon, RA9803 Food Donation Act. It encourages establishments like hotels and supermarkets to donate their leftover food to charities. These are clean leftovers, not foodwaste like pagpag.

It’s a shame that Jollibee and the other food places can’t work something out with the pag pag cooks where the disposed of food could be given to them immediately to use instead of sitting in the trash bags for an unknown amount of time. That would at least make it a bit less dangerous.

It's not common in the Philippines but only in that area. It's name is not special either, it just means "to dust off or to remove the dirt". They remove the dirt with the left-overs by boiling it repeatedly and re-cooking it into a new dish. Yes, I agree with you that our government needs to do better and really serve the public not their own pockets. Private groups can only do so much to help, but with the slums, it's sad that the local and our national gov't is doing so little about it.

The way Chef Tatung compared pagpag with foraging is actually quite perfect. Having lived both in the city and the province, I can definitely say this is a case of "making do with what you can find". Back in the province, you can go out, pick vegetables, and have a whole meal without spending more than 50 pesos in one day. The same cannot be said in the city where almost everything has to be bought, and not having the means to certainly forces people to turn to other means.

Thank you for this. I was born & raised in the Philippines (specifically in the Bicol region), & now living in America. I moved back & forth & finally stayed in 2009. I never even knew this existed up until a few years ago. But your video, Asian Boss, Andrew’s, Robloak, & I believe a very *few* other channels have shined light on it in the most raw & authentic way. Not for the click baits but for what it is. The reality of life for other people. It’s always humbling watching videos like these. Thank you

Sonny definitely doesn't even try to hide when certain food don't fit to his tastes. he ate raw animal organs and was honest in how "disgusting" his experience was (emphasis on his experience, not the culture of the people eating it), i believe he also mentioned that he'll never try it again. he also has a video where he even felt like throwing up, it was a kind of marine animal's bile or organ if i remember correctly. this pagpag is basic for him

Thank you for featuring our country, and for being an eye-opener to everyone-that behind the success of those fastfood chains are some people scavenging to feed empty stomachs. This might be the only food show, which covers a broad spectrum, providing insight into various food cultures, this video how displeasing it may be sheds light into the state of the society, which is reflected through food habits of the common people. very bold and commendable work by the team. 🤩

I wish I could avoid making comparisons as Sonny is really unique, but I feel like Sonny took up from where Anthony Bourdain has left. Bourdain was able to not only present a show, but also represent a culture, showing not only flashy and glamourous shots of the surface, but also going deep into society and it's problems and beauties. Nowdays Best Ever Food Reviews covers stuff that "for views" channels and TV avoid because it is not all bright and shiny. In many many ways I think Sonny's show and team go far beyond Bourdain's, as Sonny do all that as basically a regular person. The Egypt series is proof of that as the team suffered as any regular person without the backing of an international broadcast company would. I am really happy to have such an incredible show to watch and enjoy, sob, and learn from.

@@atakamoto I agree with the anthony Bourdain analogy, i developed interest towards cooking looking at no reservations and bizzare foods ( by Andrew Zimmern ), this channel feels like a combination of both and i believe Sonny should have his own spinoff, it would have been great if Bourdain was alive, both could have one super episode

New Subscriber here! As a fellow Filipino who often eat at carrienderia to survive the day, thank you for shedding a bright light on how the Filipino slum areas survive on their day to day. It's not pretty and definitely not easy to watch but the moral of the story is, people everyday take what they have already in life for granted while others have to go through one trash bag after the other just to make it for the day. Being grateful goes a long way and I am so proud to call myself a Filipino because of this.

Thanks for sharing such a tragic yet empowering story with all of us! We just had a bowl of noodles worth over $160 in the previous video and now we have food sourced from garbage bags in a slum in this one. The contrasting content really shows how this channel aims to explore the different horizons of food and culture and share them with the planet! Finally somebody went over there to do a video I’ve been watching how they eat trash and turning into every day food for the last year and a half and just been waiting for somebody who does who eating TV shows to go down there and also give it a try to show other people that this is what a lot of people eat that a lot of people in America would never think about it or know this is going on 😮❤

Been watching this channel for years now, to see the teams effort, and Sonny’s production, storytelling, finding worthy stories is commendable. Hard to watch at moments but I deeply respect the perseverance of these people.
