After finding out about Bo, I have become addicted to his comedy. From the irony-ridden "Oh Bo" and "Repeat Stuff" to the heartbreakingly honest "Can't Handle This Right Now", he's managed to express the desperation that people our generation feels as regards our society and existence. I truly love him as an artist and wish him the best. Btw he directed a movie called 8th Grade, which is about to premiere in the US.

The "Goodnight, I hope you are happy" line is one of the strongest things I've ever witnessed in any stand-up comedy or similar act. I've watched the Make Happy show 5 or 6 times and still, just when you showed that one clip, I started to get tears in my eyes. I have so much admiration for Bo Burnham, he is in my opinion the greatest stand-up comedian alive and maybe even the greatest ever (although there are some he might only be tied with).

as linguistically it isn't that different from "thank you for being here, you're wonderful (the crowd), have a great night" that most performances end with, its the greater context of the rest of the show that propels the sincerity of it that makes it actually punch home hard.

I prefer the term 'Metamodernism' personally. It describes the ultimate result of Postmodernism, once you have realized that everything is meaningless and there is no truth, the only place left to go is to realize that meaninglessness itself is also meaningless. Metamodernism is simultaneously knowing that everything has no meaning, that your life is a lie, and carrying on having that meaning and truth anyways, not because it does matter, but because it doesn't. For this reason there is currently something of a second enlightenment, we have destroyed all meaning, we have reached the end of the dream. Now all that is left to do is decide what dream we wish to have next and start it. Culturally, everything is not only falling apart, it is already rubble, and as more and more people realise that it is gone they start to build again, according to their dreams and ambitions. Some will choose to build back the old, some will build the new, and some will build the absurd, but one thing is certain. We are in an age of tremendous cultural upheaval, and the end result is as uncertain as the roll of a die. Now, personally, I think that the die is loaded, that it will always land on something in some way better than what we have.
@MurdokSampson
@MurdokSampson 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this thought! I took a political philosophy class and one of the philosophers we mostly just glossed over was Edmund Burke, but I remember that he was against the modernist movement and one point he made to counter it was basically saying that if meaning is an illusion, why not leave the illusion? Is it so much better to have the truth that means the same but is sort of just worse. It's not his exact words, but I'm trying to capture the idea. Was his writing in the same vein? Obviously he was speaking in response to modernism and not postmodernism, but the idea felt really similar to me.
@xenathcytrin202
@xenathcytrin202 6 жыл бұрын
He could very well have been talking about both. After all, one is just the continuation of the other, and in that same vein both are the continuation of modernism. I disagree with calling this 'late stage' anything, it is just the continuation of a cycle that has existed as long as life. Out with the old, in with the new, before you can create, you must first destroy, it is the inevitable march of time's progression towards increasing entropy, towards ultimate complexity and infinite nuance.
@neosoontoretro
@neosoontoretro 6 жыл бұрын
I think you got the metamodern experiment a bit wrong. It's a return to the grand narrative without undermining our reasonable suspicion of grand narratives which we learned from postmodernism era. It was the postmodern theory that help us deconstruct illusion in the pursuit of meaning and truth. In a way, metamodernism is more postmodern than postmodernism itself.
@xenathcytrin202
@xenathcytrin202 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it certainly can be for some. For others it can be pretty much anything. Old ideas of meaning are gone, that means that it can be found pretty much anywhere you care to look. If you choose to look to the meaning of the past you will find it, but that is not by far the only place you can look.
@neosoontoretro
@neosoontoretro 6 жыл бұрын
@Xenath Cytrin I wouldn't go as far as say old ideas of meaning are gone, I would say that these old idea are being recontextualize to be made more relevant in the modern world.

Before his specials, it it is important to recognize how self-deprecating he was to counter how annoying he probably thought he was. My Whole Family Thinks I'm Gay was a perfect representation of that time. While it wasn't derogatory in most sense, it was a stepping stone in his creative process

I hope you guys do an Inside video, I think with Inside it goes past the idea of creating meaning in your own life and asks what does it mean when those meaning that you created are torn away and you realize that they've been distracting you from both the world around you, and your own mental state, I had a similar experience over the last year where I had to look inside myself and try to be ok with myself without the distractions

Essentially we need to use the cynicism we obtained from post modern culture to reestablish our values and ethics on a sturdier base; instead of embracing nihilism for nihilism's sake, perhaps we should re-establish our culture on the fact that we know that nothing is real and that nothing is meaningful, to reestablish meaning and reality to where it more deserves it. As a simple example a Christian might be motivated to donate to the poor on the bases that his good deed will be rewarded in heaven. A post modern cynic would come to him and try to convince him that his god does exist and that his action is still selfish in nature. A post-post modern reformer would suggest that our good deeds should embrace the selfishness that occur on our social obligation to help each other instead of the selfishness that occur on the fact that we will be rewarded in heaven. In short he would suggest that we should donate to others not because we are going to be rewarded in heaven, rather because helping each other is an important social obligation that we need to commit to in order for all of us to survive and thrive.

One thing that always gets me, and your comment really highlights it, is that postermodernism and nihilism are very destructive entities. Your example of a Christian doing something out of selfishness is incredibly powerful, but it's the reaction to their selfishness. The aim has been to discredit Christianity and considered it a destructive force, but that aim throws out all the good with the bad. I've had atheists tell me they are grateful for their Christian upbringing as it taught them charity, compassion, being a good neighbor, etc. Where this video claims Bo is going with post-postmodernism seems to look at building on those same ideals. The future is one with more compassion, more charity, and more respect shown to everyone. In a sense, I think the cultural shift away from Christianity has seen a massive shift away from being a hopeful society. Society is grounded in the here and now and what's wrong rather than focused on a brighter future. Whether you agree with Christianity, it's hard to deny the positive outlook the religion teaches for the future and how a primary aim is to become more righteous. I'm trying to avoid the current political commentary where Christians act more like Pharisees than they do Christ in the political realm. That is another can of worms altogether and one that deserves scorn (and I am a Christian). But I see a lot of hopeless people that fall in line with postmodernism and nihilism and that's not a great outlook. I adore George Carlin because he could be a very destructive force, but he always aimed to teach and provide a way forward. TL:DR Criticism without constructive remarks is a destructive force. Postermodern and Nihilistic Comedy is a destructive force and Bo is trying to push past that.

As someone who was young when 9/11 happened, but old enough to remember it, I’m not sure the effect has been fully articulated within our culture. Coming home to parents crying, not giving you straight answers, and then watching thousands of people die on television is something that doesn’t really have precedent.
