We're able to breathe thanks to some very specific laws of physics plus some important muscles. In this video, I'll walk you through a single breath, gas exchange, ventilation, perfusion, and partial pressure.

Hi, I’m Patrick. I’m a freelance science writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and a master’s in clinical exercise physiology. I used to work in the clinical setting as a certified athletic trainer, physical therapy aide, and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. After working in the clinical setting, I went back to school and became a teacher. The goal of my content is to help normal people, not just pre-med students, learn about the human body. That might mean explaining a topic from an anatomy class or exploring a topic from medical history.

I know I mentioned it in this video a bunch, but next up in this respiratory series: Bohr and Haldane Effects. I'm loving respiratory lately!

As someone who is fascinated by the physics of biology, this was right up my alley. Now I can't wait to understand how hemoglobin does its stuff.

I've been practicing breathwork and studying breathing for a good bit and this is the best video I've seen. Looks great, accurate and has enough good details/important. Awesome Job!

Is it true that body regulates breath according to CO2 levels in the blood? In other words it's not the lack of oxygen, but excess of CO2 that drives us to breath harder.

Yes this is true. You can actually kill someone by replacing the air with something like nitrogen because you won’t be able to tell your not getting oxygen only that you are getting rid of CO2. You’ll just slowing lose consciousness as you lose oxygen and die. This is the same thing that happens when you get too high in the sky air where there isn’t oxygen.
