The Picos de Europa National Park is a 647 square kilometre wonderland that straddles Asturias, Cantabria, and Castile and León in Northern Spain. Its proximity to the Atlantic coast, the Costa Verde, creates a temperate climate more akin to that of the British Isles. Golden sandy beaches are pounded by surf and craggy limestone cliffs cascade down into the cold, wild waters of the Bay of Biscay. Inland, forests of deciduous and coniferous trees sweep up towards the towering limestone monoliths, spires and peaks that crown the Picos de Europa National Park. In between lie rich alpine meadows misty with flowers. There are endless opportunities for day hikes and multi-day treks in this region, including the most popular, the Cares Gorge from Puente Poncebos to Caín and that from the mountain village of Bulnes to the Refugio de la Vega de Urriellu. Known as Picu Urriellu in Asturian, the 2,519 metre high Naranjo de Bulnes, a towering chimney of grey white Palaeozoic limestone which sits behind the refugio, is the symbol of the Picos de Europa National Park and is on every Spanish rock climber’s wish list. Both hikes are featured in this film.

Yes, Spain has nearly every kind of landscape, which really fascinated me when I discovered it some years ago by chance on youtube🙂! There are corners you nearly feel like being in Africa (for instance looking down from the castle in Monfrague National Park, Exzremadura) ,western USA (Tabernas Desert, Bardenas Reales, Ordesa Canyon, Panta Sau Colsacabra...) or Australia ( Mallos Riglos, Aragon) - or at home in green Germany (La Garrotxa in Catalonia), while Asturias and Cantabria seem to be a mixture of romantic Swiss Mountains and Irish Coast. But with special own character. Meanwhile I have visited many of the beautiful places, I found here, but there are still more I long to travel to. It is really strange, that most people in Middle Europe think only of the mediterranean beaches with their mass tourism and some cultural highlights like Granada, Sevilla, Barcelona and Madrid when Spain comes into their mind. There is so much more.

Thanks, Adrian. It's not hard to be enamoured with this part of Spain, it's absolutely magnificent and well worth a visit, as it's still quite unspoilt and undeveloped, compared to much of the south of the country. A walker's paradise :-)

Peter's words, translated: Once again, a great movie to relax to and marvel at. Hardly anyone can appreciate how much work has gone into this film, how much time and effort it takes to create the time-lapse photography, to position the camera correctly, and to edit the film. Danke für Ihre netten Worte, Peter. Indeed, it takes lots of time and patience to make a film like this. The weather does not always do what you would like and to get the best shots means being up all night, or before dawn, and hiking high into the mountains with lots of camera gear and camping equipment. But the end result is worth it! Martin and Sharron

Martin and Sharron this place is just incredible. Thanks for going there and sharing it with us. What words can describe the footage and video? I think remarkable, stupendous and even supernatural. I must say quality is always your trait and it's what we've aspired to since we started on KZfaq. So I resonate and celebrate your intent. Brilliant! Well guys that was one to put in the folder and remember what with having my passport now. The canyons, walkways, light, stars, coast and that flower opening. Ye ha to life! All the best and happy exploring. Loved it. Mark.

Mark, thanks so much for your kind words. We had a tremendous time in this part of Spain which is unlike any other part of the country, as its Atlantic weather creates a green and forested landscape more akin to parts of the British Isles. You should defo put it on your bucket list. Loads of great places to camp, decent budget hotels, cheap food and the people are fab. And the landscape, well I could wax eloquent about that for ages! Hopefully the film has captured some of the magic of the region. ATB, M&S

Kernowclimber Hey there Sharron. If you are saying these great things about then it must be true. In fact I could see how amazing it was and I've already done a bit of research. Spain is full of surprises. In a way it reminds me of the Dolomites. Good stuff both. Have a cool week Sharron. All the best to you. Mark.
@Kernowclimber
@Kernowclimber 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is a little like the Dolomites, but better imho as it's not as commercialised and certainly much cheaper. A scrumptious three course menu del dia for 12-15 euro is great value. My blog on our stay there is worth a read if you've a few minutes. Enjoy the onset of autumn, Mark. Look forward to more Wye Adventures ;-)

Thanks so much R&D, kind words indeed. This part of Spain is incredible, with epic landscapes waiting to be explored and photographed. Asturias is not particularly well known by people outside Spain; they flock there in the summer to escape the relentless heat of the south, while we Brits flock to the Costas in our thousands! We had to be patient filming here, as the proximity to the Atlantic means the weather did not always play ball. We drove down from Ireland so we had the luxury of being able to wait for the right conditions. A great place and one we'd highly recommend to all those who love the great outdoors. ATB, M&S.

Wonderful film. The nightlapse are spectacular. What camera are you using for that as I would love to capture something like that during the winter in the Cairngorms. As always a treat to watch. Ray.
@EtherealLightPhotography
@EtherealLightPhotography 8 жыл бұрын
Ray, I use a full frame dSLR (Pentax K1), but any high quality camera should do. Night time lapse can be a particular burden having to leave the camera taking photos for several hours and hoping that you get the exposure, composition and focus correct, never mind disturbances from humans, wild animals or the weather (or will the battery last). There are quite a few websites describing the techniques to acquire and process time lapse. Regards, Martin

We've really no idea whether it is legal to bear arms in Spain. Chances of seeing a bear, wolf or wild boar are minimal, so not sure why you'd even want to carry a gun.
@alimanacumboina7850
@alimanacumboina7850 6 жыл бұрын
Not,certainly not.In Spain is only allowed to have a rifle or shotgun with you for hunting purposes.Of course with all the papers,gun licence,hunting licence and specific autoritation,hunter insurance and i forget anyone more.At the other hand there are´nt bandits,wolves never attack the people and bears are so few that if someone eats you the poor animal has all the right.Luckily for some things and very unluckily for anothers this is not America.Even more,if you´ve hunting legally and you have well tucked your rifle into your car,you can NOT pass the limits of National Park,guardia civil are reasonable people but you´ll must give a lot of coherent explanations.Never try a bribe,this is not Mexico and bribing is serious crimial offense.Enjoy when you like the beautiful green Spain.
