Mexico’s biggest Chinatown is in the middle of Mexicali, right on the other side of the U.S.-Mexico border. 100 years ago, Chinese workers started arriving, and its peak, the population of Mexicali was 90% Chinese. This has led to a crazy history filled with underground casinos, secret tunnels, and crime. My wife Rita, my friend Brian and I decided to go check out this city where many of the locals can speak Mandarin, English, Cantonese, and Spanish, along with a bunch of southern Chinese dialects. What are these mysterious Chinese polyglots like? Let’s go take a look!

The settlement history of the Chinese in the American continent repeated similarly at different time and locations. Initially Chinese immigrants first arrived at Monterey peninsula California in two boats with only one safely reaching the coast. The survivors made a living from fishing and traded with the locals. A local born Chinese woman bearing the nickname Spanish Mary spoke ~5 languages to facilitate the communication between the Chinese and locals of both native Indian and the Caucasian’s. Their villages were burned multiple times with the Caucasian’s cheering at the Chinese escapes from fire. They were forbidden from re-build and as a result they left Monterey. The gold rush attracted them to other regions. The subsequent fires at San Francisco and then Medically just repeated the same bad treatment to the Chinese settlers.

I really enjoyed that video. So glad you were able to go to Mexico and interact with the ethnic Chinese community there. They truly are polyglots. I'm in agreement with that one son that worked in the kitchen. I prefer to speak in English...lol probably because it comes easiest to me. English and Taishanese/Kaipinghua are my strongest languages. It was great to see the auntie keeping the Taishanese dialect alive south of the border.

Thank you for sharing with us the video about Mexicali. I guess very few Chinese know about the small border town, the stories of those Chinese workers more than 100 years ago were really touching and saddening.

Mexico remains a country by which I’m utterly fascinated and I cannot wait to explore its various corners one day. There’s so much hidden beauty in a country like this where people have to put up with the stereotypes perpetuated by the media and whatnot but just keep working to eke out a living. I loved that you kept the narrative in the video overall balanced and brought up Mexicali’s dark past with respect to (Chinese) immigration there.

Some facts of Mexicali - The temperature can be as high as 120 F, there are over 100 Chinese restaurants in Mexicali and many are crowded after Sunday mass. The food court in one of the large malls are all run by Chinese. I asked one person and she told me that life could be better, but also everyone's waiting for a phone call from the US saying arrangements have been made for you to come over.
