The statement by Trump regarding conversation with Putin about invading Ukraine is interesting/disturbing, I’m glad you brought it up, and it’s probably something that many of us would like to hear more about. Although many less scandalous explanations could be imagined. Role of a less than effectual President, who might be in early stage dementia, has upon our military & responsiveness to foreign affairs could be another good topic. The system is a mix of robust bureaucratic safeguards & authority overlaps, and dysfunction, arrogance, corruption…

I can’t stand when they switch to another topic instead of answering the question. I watched the UK PM debate on BBC out of curiosity and the moderator would jump in and try to keep the candidates on topic. @@soulsatomizer7908 There was once a time when Russia could take a country in a few days. Just like they did with Crimea. Chokeholds, energy, radio and TV, government buildings before the army had time to respond to what is happening. Like August 20th 1968 when Soviet invaded Czechoslovakia. 5 days after 200 000+ soldiers and thousands of tanks rolled in there was new leadership (Dubcek was kept as outward face). It took about that time for Soviet forces to crush the uprising in Hungary in 1956. It took 16 days to crush Georgia back in 2008. Evidence that the armies lost some of their effectiveness. It took 4 days to have complete control over Crimea militarily in February/March 2014. The reason why they believed it would take 4 days for the rest was because faulty intelligence. The lack of fighting in Crimea and the limited military action in Donbass led Putin to believe the reports of having support in Ukraine. It's hard to understand today but once upon a time spetsnaz was very feared. The belief was that they were so good at their task and their intelligence was so good that they could capture and hold everything important within 48 hours in any country. Basically cutting the head of the snake to let the rest of the army in.

America did not lose in Afghanistan. Afghanistan lost in their war. The US spent 20yrs of effort, treasure and American lives training Afghan troops and government to defend themselves against the Taliban. Yet as soon as the US left, Afghan troops laid down their arms and went home. The president of Afghanistan fled with his wealth on a helicopter. This is why Afghanistan fell, not American surrender, but because Afghans cared too little to defend itself. They have no excuse. The US was there, making sacrifices, some of them ultimate, to help Afghanistan prevail. Yet, not enough of them fought with all their hearts for a new progressive society in their country. Now they have what they chose to have. We should be done with them. Let's expend our resources where they can do some good and stop pointing figures at other Americans and admit the truth. Our mistake was trusting Afghanistan's will to fight. The withdrawal was a mess, as nationwide withdrawals often are. Remember what happened when we withdrew in Vietnam? It took a lot of political courage for Biden to make his decision and he deserves our respect for making such a difficult decision.

The deal Trump negotiated for the Afghanistan withdrawal would have been executed in the Autumn, and not in the middle of fighting season. Regarding Ukraine, Trump lifted the "non-lethal aid only" policy, sending Javelins (based on an argument from Sebastian Gorka as far as I can remember, but don't quote me on that), "because they won't be used against Russia unless Russia invades". Anyway, it really was a mess yesterday (from both), yesterday's debate was a bragging Liar vs a literally demented Fool. Both were awful, but I must say Trump was quite restrained and calculated during this debate - he usually loves interrupting, but he gave Biden all the space he needed to show he is no longer there.
