It gets even more sad if you rewatch now knowing there are 2 brothers sharing one life. When he tells his wife he doesn't love her today that's exactly what he means. The brother that actually fell in love with her is the other brother. When she told him she was pregnant he seemed a little unexcited, and that's because he's not the father, it's the other one.

My favourite Nolan movie. As many have said throughout the years - Nolan wrote the movie itself like a magic trick. The first act of the movie was 'the pledge', the second 'the turn' and third 'the prestige'. And just like a magic trick all the clues were right in front of us the whole time but we just weren't watching closely. Brilliant.

@sergioz536
@sergioz536 2 жыл бұрын
Movie is a narrative magic trick. If you pay attention on several clues, you will found out that Root is not a double, but his real twin brother. Yes, they are pretending what they are not. If Fallon disguises to appear very different from Borden so no one will recognizes him, Root and Angier does the opposite and Root is disguised as an almost identical Borden, and a clumsy, drunk, unknown and indomitable one. With this disguise and behaviour, they know that Borden will found out, and that's the first part of the trick: TO FAIL in front of him to let Borden think he is just a double. Once they "fail", they can do the second part of the trick, a new show where now Root is not disguised and not acting as a double, but like what he is, his real twin brother, so they can do the twin trick using the machine as a misdirection. They know now that Borden will never think Angier could have a twin brother, because how could be if he needed a clumsy double before?. Now they do the perfect and limited show, and they know Borden soon or later will try to sneak into backstage to see what's going on. So Angier in these limited shows goes every night into the water tank, but not dying, he can be released by his team or knows how to escape. He will wait to die only the night that Borden comes to backstage, because it's a trap. This night Angier sacrifices his life because he wants to send Borden to jail, looking for justice/vengance for the death of his drowned girlfriend in the same situation. And wait, it's not over. Because if you pay attention Cutter always talks about a drowned sailor who died and said dying was agonizing... and hehehey you just heard Cutter's trick: Die and agony are terrible words, but the important thing is not about if it was like going home or it was agony, the important thing nobody pay attention is that the drowned sailor in fact got resurrected so he can tell how it was. So, did Angier died and then got resurrected and buried alive? Well, there's a scene when they say exactly this as a clue/joke in the restaurant scene with Borden. The final answer can be resolved at the final frame, where a bubble appears in the water tank. Now, Angier has done the definitive trick, to be at the same time the man in the box and the prestige.

The thing that always bothered me was how no one realized the ramifications or full potential of Tesla’s device. It replicates matter! Tesla had achieved almost literal alchemy, but simply fulfilled a commission and never returned to the device.

Have you heard the theory that the machine didn't actually work, and it was part of Angier's best magic trick to convince everybody, including us the audience, that the machine was real? This would explain why Tesla abandoned it. Not because he thought it was dangerous, but because it didn't actually work. Angier made up the part about it actually being a cloning device so that he could trick Borden and Cutter into believing he achieved the trick via miraculous science... but he actually did it by still using Root (Root didn't leave, Angier just got better at hiding him, even from us, even from Cutter), and the only night anybody actually drowned was the night that Borden went backstage. All the other tanks are empty (you can see they're empty if you look closely... this is the real point of the narration asking us "Are you watching closely?"). It wasn't clones that drowned... it was Root that drowned. Angier didn't want Cutter to know this, so he convinced him the machine was real and he only killed a clone of himself. Teleportation/cloning isn't possible. This isn't a science fiction movie. It's a realistic movie about magicians. Us being tricked into believing the machine is real was part of the magic trick of this movie.

Disagree. That theory doesn’t explain the hats and cats outside. It’s not a science fiction movie, yes. But to them in that era, science itself might as well have been science fiction. Unreal. Too good to be true. Real magic. Nolan using a fictional Tesla character to create a cloning device highlights just how mesmerized Angier became with science as a means to achieve his ultimate victory, no matter the cost. At the end he even says “it’s not magic, but purely science.” By the end he doesn’t even believe in magic anymore. Only science and victory. Angier truly is the real villain of the story.

After getting burned by his double I don't think he would trust to give that power over himself to another person again, *especially* himself. He knows himself and knows himself capable of murdering himself, every night, for entertainment. That's precisely why he had that pistol at the ready after using the machine, so that he wouldn't be convinced to let him live. How long until his duplicate decides he doesn't want to share the spotlight and kills the original to take his place? If he has that thought, he knows his duplicate would have that thought too. Also, that theory about the machine not working and it being Root that is killed is dumb. If all the story about Tesla and the duplicate cats and hats were framed through the journal (and thus could be a story made up by Angier), then it might have a leg to stand on. However, there is a flashback outside of the bounds of the journal at the very end of the movie in which it shows Angiers shooting the duplicate. The other tanks also do seem to have bodies in them, you can see it in the row of tanks on the right just after Borden turns to look back before Cutter's final line of the film and also as the camera pans over to the left just before Cutter says "fooled."

On rewatches you realize the movie teases the big twist early on, in the bird trick when Christian Bale's character kills one bird and tries passing a look-a-like off as it. The little boy asks "But what about his brother?".

The best movie of Nolan, IMO! Standard for story telling and film making. So much layered, so much dense, so much acting performances, so much character depth, great photography and what not!! . Most of the movies that have twists doesnt have much replay value but this is a milestonic exception. Every time you watch, you pick new stuffs, go back , replay and repeat.

Oh kudos, Nikki - not a lot of people work out quite what's going on there with the water tank and Angier killing himself over and over and over again night after night - but you got there before the movie finished. It's utterly horriying and speaks to the depth of which his obsession drove him. This is one that's definitely worth a re-watch just to see if you can work out when Borden is Borden and when he's his twin.

Where did this come from!!!! One of my all time favs! and the movie works like a magic trick as well. Looking back, it should have been obvious Fallon was his brother. But we are so focused on everything else, we don't even think about this random character thrown into the movie. The shiny Tesla lights, the pretty girl, etc; we are distracted. Borden and Angier dissappear, then both have a prestige. Fantastic movie!

I can never decide if this movie or Interstellar are my favorite movie ever. This one is probably better, but Interstellar's got that soundtrack tho. Either way, The Prestige bears basically unlimited rewatches. Aside from catching new details ever time, it's just CAPTIVATING.

I also very much recommend The Illusionist, another twist-filled movie about a 19th century magician that had the bad luck to be released at the same time as this film and got buried by it, though it's very good in its own right telling ultimately a quite different story.

Clearly there's a lot of back and forth, but two character traits that stand out to me: Angiers killed himself many times, shot Borden, and even framed Borden for his murder to cause him to be executed. Borden on the other hand, even after having been shot by Angiers, still tried to save him when he saw him drowning. I can't imagine Angiers would do anything but gloat were the tables turned.
@elizabethstrong6057

True, though Angier had a lot of revenge rage due to his wife possibly dying by Borden's hand. That's the event that set this whole rivalry off.

I don't know the laws at that time, but if the brothers revealed themselves in such a way that the authorities couldn't tell them apart (government didn't keep fingerprint records at that time), then I don't see the execution taking place. They can't hang both brothers since one is innocent and they can't tell which is which. Might have saved one of the twins.

I just realized... This man was so obsessed with a magic trick that he ignored the fact that he has a magic device that can literally duplicate living creatures and inanimate objects. Like... That's the literal end of scarcity. No one would go hungry. No one would have a lack of anything. You'd have to hide it to avoid endless war.
