I realized my fiancé was autistic when a barista spilled a dribble of hot chocolate on him and his food. He had a full blown yet quiet meltdown, he wanted to abandon the food and immediately leave. I had to talk him down and just swapped my food with his, thankfully we ordered the same thing. That and him abandoning me and walking nearly a mile to the car because children were being disruptive.

This happens to me with eating at my home if there’s not food that my mind wants in that moment I will starve

yep, it’s so genuinely frustrating. i will tell myself to “just eat” but I can’t, especially if it’s texture related

@@brisbreathing I’ve learned just keep the stuff you eat stocked. I like rice and beef so I keep rice and beef I also over eat at meals so if I forget to eat or don’t feel like eating I’ll be ok.

@brisbreathing the example we used to use was a chicken nugget is always a chicken nugget. It will always have a similar texture, taste and appearance but a strawberry could be sweet, sour, both, taste of hardly anything, firm, mushy or in-between. Food related issues are actually a massively common thing for people with autism, the stats estimate as much as 89% have issues with food either because of texture, taste or smell. I'm sure you know a lot of this, it's more for anyone following so they know they aren't alone and being neurodivergent doesn't mean they are wrong, just different from normal expectations.

No automatically rank ordering items from restaurants and stores in decending order of preference from best to worst amd choosing the ifem highest on the list like i do i have no faith in the stocking ability of retail

Okay I don’t leave the restaurant but I do almost always order the same thing and I have eaten sausage egg and cheese in some form for breakfast for the past 2 years now I’m not diagnosed or anything but there are some odd things I do that make me wonder

Could be worth looking into. Have a look initially into how autism is diagnosed where you live and the dyad of impairments which is the standard model used in diagnosing ASD. Everyone has traits which could be considered autistic, it's whether you have enough of them spread across the categories. If you couldn't get your usual breakfast, would it affect the rest of your day/week? Would it cause physical discomfort? Do you have issues with social interactions? I'm not asking you to answer here by the way, just providing prompts for you to think about. Don't rely on internet diagnosers lol but there is a lot of information online from medical associations that could give you an idea of whether you need an assessment. For many level 1 autistic people (people who are autistic but can function in society with minimal or no support) it doesn't mean much to anyone else but it does give them a sense of understanding and relief plus a way to explain themselves that is familiar to most of the general public now.

I do the same things and I am not even close to being autistic. You are making the symptoms fit the condition.

She has a diagnosis which takes multiple professionals examining all aspects of her behaviour and development. This is ONE of the many things that is attributed to her autism. Lots of people have autistic traits but aren't autistic because they don't have enough of them. For example Lots of children like to spin, Lots of children like to line up their toys in colour or size order, Lots of children struggle with social interactions, lots of children have meltdowns that seemingly cannot be calmed, Lots of children can experience sensory overload with noise or light BUT most children don't experience all of these things and on a regular basis. Autism is, a developmental disorder that affects how they view and experience the world so it isn't a shock that some of what they experience resonates with others who would be considered neurotypical or "normal". It isn't trying to expand the diagnosis, it's just trying to explain how different things can affect someone with autism. Food issues are a common issue for autistic people because of the need for routine and the inability to adapt. A chicken nugget is always a chicken nugget but a strawberry could be sweet, sour, both or taste of very little. One of the autistic people I know didn't eat breakfast for over a year because they changed the recipe in his usual cereal and it took him that long to adapt to an alternative.

@@amyme4066 Yes thank you for this great explanation. 9.9/10 times, these comments really are just driven by ignorance. That being said, I don’t have the energy to deal with them. 😅

OCD has some overlap with Autism. Can we stop broadening this diagnosis until it covers everyone on the planet ?!
@brisbreathing
@brisbreathing Ай бұрын
yep! many psychological and neurodevelopmental conditions share symptoms or overlap in various ways - that’s why it’s important to work with your doctor and/or psychiatrist to ensure proper diagnosis and consequent management

@@lovelysakurapetalsyt No. Neurodevelopmental problems are "different for everyone". Stop grouping everything under autism, it makes diagnosis and treatment extremely hard. It takes away valuable resources from families of autistic children that need a lot of help.
