Ghana has had a gold rush but here, Afua Hirsch discovers how Chinese immigrants are profiting from industrialising the country's small-scale mining industry. She sees for herself that, for the many locals who chance losing life and limb for a piece of the same pie, the risks are rarely worth it, and explores where the responsibility for regulating this industry lies.

I m a Hongkonger. I understand very well how the Chinese would loot an economy by signing a treaty with a government from a less developed nation. The Chinese would loan u a dollar but u have to repay 1000 times in return. When ur resources r used up, they will leave, and u r left alone in ur own country.

His emphasis was on making a living, and for his family. He mentioned making some money but he was not emphasizing that, whereas the translation went just " we came for the money". "We came here for the money" is definitely a misrepresentation of his altitude. I am a Chinese American and bilingual and I can definite tell the misinterpretation here. How unfortunate.

There's no excuse for this kind of exploitative behavior. It's just pure greed. The Chinese for obvious reasons, but also the Ghanians, whose corrupt agencies allows this kind of thing to happen. I just hope people realize that not all, and not even the majority of us Chinese think this kind of behavior is acceptable. Out of 1.3 billion people, we get quite a few bad apples.

Great mini-doc. Well shot and very timely with China's rampant illegal mining practices. It's so sad how easily money and influence can bend governments backwards and cause such injustice to a country. Now more than ever is the time to protest against these types of illegal practices and enforce new regulations. The Chinese translation at 3:43 is incorrect. Yes, he's doing it for money, but his reasoning behind this dirty work is for "his livelihood and to support his family." Everyone is just trying to survive.

Believe or not, there are several mistranslations in this documentary. It translates "we are doing this for money", but the original words are "we are here doing this to feed our families, to make money" And it shouldn't be translated as "to stop the local people stealing from us", it's "prevent them from robbing us" The Guardian definitely needs a better Chinese translator.

I think it's up to the Ghanian government to apply more stringent control over foreign mining. In addition, the Chinese government should investigate into profits made by these small-scale private companies. This will probably be difficult since these companies will likely be unregistered, or perhaps headed by the mafia. Ultimately, it comes down to strict enforcement with the collaboration of both governements.

I don't think so that is a big deal. The government should take some certain steps against illegal workers. As one part that brings money in the economy.

How and why has it come to this!!! The idea that the Ghana government and security agencies will sit there and allow any foreign person to do illegal mining in our country, decimating our forests and destroying the river systems of the nation is deplorable and totally unacceptable. Why????

This is very heartbreaking. We have mortgaged the continent to the Chinese, as we lavish in armaments all over. Is it that we suffer from Schizophrenia or some kind of a chronic mental malady? What exactly is the problem with fellow Africans?

The chinese will be sending workers to Canada soon to mine coal maybe, Canada also is selling 5-6 billion in uranium to china so china is not the only mining country stripping the world and who is mining Ghana's precious stones?. South America is treated the same by some Canadian mining groups so this type of restrictions on common people is nothing unique to Africa.

I am British. I agree that Britain and other Western governments are no better, or likely worse than Chinese. I also agree that this documentary is completely biased. However, regardless of nationality, the value of land to produce food, clean water to support human population, and productive forests which provide raw materials will always be worth more than gold. Only after the soil has been destroyed. Only after the last river has been poisoned. Only after the last fish has been caught. Only then will you find that gold cannot be eaten. So stop arguing about who is to blame for what. We are all citizens of planet earth. And we all depend on each other to help one another and do what is right. Forget the gold. The real gold is right before your eyes.

Subs are "interpreted" to fit the narrative. In Chinese, he says we bought guns to prevent the locals from attacking us. Later on, he says we came here to making a living, to feed a family, and to earn money. The subs just condensed it to, "we're here to make money."

Tibet only become a territorial issue with the British sticking it's nose where it didn't belong. The same situation exists in Taiwan. Pundits never mention where British takeover of Chinese territory did work ie) Hong Kong. The Chinese had enough foresight to negotiate the return of HK after 99 years ... Thereby preventing a full-scale war between the two empires.

But they do mention the 50-60 million chinese killed during Mao's rule. Or the slavery that existed in China's many dynasties before the Boxer Rebellion. Oh yeah let's not forget that the Viet Namese had to fight China off of their land after the Viet Nam war.
@CynicalGenius
@CynicalGenius 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, what's a few million dead in the pursuit of US foreign policy in the 20th century? The dead the US has compiled ie) Hiroshima/Nagasaki, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan are just figments of your imagination. While I'm not condoning Mao's actions, most of the 'dead count' died from starvation, not bullets. 'Starved to death' is much more an ambiguous concept than "bombed to death." People can choose to move or farm, they don;t choose to be bombed.
