Lee Kuan Yew's leadership was a departure from conventional democratic approaches that transformed Singapore into an unlikely success story. His leadership catapulted his country's independence and propelled it into a high-income economy and a developed powerhouse in just one generation. His unorthodox approach proved that progress could be achieved without democracy, a notion he reinforced by controlling the media and suppressing the opposition. Thus, Singapore became a living testament to what is often called soft authoritarianism or benevolent dictatorship. Mr Lee's belief in eugenics was problematic, extreme and divisive. His policy was not to give the poor and uneducated help to compete more equally. Instead, they were offered subsidies for sterilisation. The potential societal cost of Lee Kuan Yew's eugenics policy is a matter of concern. It's hard to fathom how many brilliant minds were prevented from existence or serving their country well. Instead, the resources were disproportionately allocated to the state-identified elites. While Singapore's soft authoritarianism is undeniably a success, we should also consider the potential of other paths. Taiwan and South Korea, for instance, have transitioned from authoritarianism to full-throated democracy while maintaining their economic dynamism. This offers a beacon of hope, demonstrating that success can be achieved through various approaches.

Without your explanation, my too quick response would testify to a lack of knowledge and would be superficial or even offensive. It’s all new to me.

I will step aside his equating education with intelligence as there are lot of factors going into it and I will just refer to education as that is his criteria. I would still say this plan has failed because there was a primary objective to this and that was to increase the birth-rate. That he wanted to selectively increase the fertility rate (the number of children that are born to a woman in her lifetime) when it comes to highly educated women and decrease the fertility rate for lower educated women was a secondary point. What happened instead was that the fertility rate for highly educated women continued to drop, the fertility rate for moderately educated women continued to drop even faster and the fertility rate for lower educated women also dropped as planned. It has come to the point that the total fertility rate dropped to a record low of

Well it would make more sense if the poor would get the help frome the goverment too that they can feel that they are too worthy. It dosen't say that from a poor family you can't become a doctor or a professor and get hig sallery payed job. But it shows that the minister is a rasist and a bully to tramp down on the poore and low income people wich I think is most of the people in that country. I do wanna know from what kind of family tree that old man has grown from, a rich 1 with the silverspoon in his hand or a poor/ normal family that knows where you are from

Singapore's population is less than 6 million. The USA is well over 300 million. Trying to get that many people to do anything, no matter the motivation, is near impossible. Not going to post an opinion on what I think of the law specifically as there are too many unmentioned nuances. What about those born with disabilities or have a brain trauma from... falling off a bike. Also, what are the parameters of being "smart"? Some are book smart, some are emotionally intelligent, some are critical thinkers, others are creative thinkers. Also, 2 smart people procreating doesn't necessarily mean their offspring will be smart.... not to mention the potential for narrowing the gene pool after a while.... kind of feels like dog breeding. After a while certain breeds end up with respiratory issues or have hip issues... sorry, the brain kind of went on a tangent 😁! Singapore also has very restrictive laws, which has pros & cons, but would seem crazy to most Americans. I do, however, look forward to visiting an old college friend who lives there sometime in the next few years 😁

Just bad, misguided, and ineffective policy. Please don't tout it.

this is hideous. I have spent my life advocating for equality and opportunities for people with mental and physical disabilities. This is wrong. Further disadvantaging those who are/may be already disadvantaged. Having a low IQ is not a crime. Navigating education is not as easy as it sounds to the average Joe. Disadvantaging children before they are born is unconscionable IMO.

Offer me a SECOND job then!moving to Singapore doesn’t sound bad if they want to hire people😭 why are people lazy is because they have no goals Ngl he’s smart at manipulating people to his plans which is a good plan, well not manipulation actually MOTIVATING. He’s telling them if you work HARD you will be rewarded which is fair and if not and you only can get a low paying job = homelessness. Because NO benefits from the gov. I actually like it. However, still perhaps a case by case, where if there’s learning difficulties or illness or barriers that actually hinder a person’s ability to study as hard as other can be an issue. What if it’s out of your control? What if you’ve been abused or some severe trauma ? It’s a great plan but also needs adjusting not sure what tho

If we followed his (minister) ideas, then our favorite BTS guys would not have been born, since most of them are from very poor families!!!!!!
