I actually speak to the Ensign of 1947 fairly regularly when he comes into my shop. I’ve served him for years, it was only the other day I was talking about watching the Trooping of the Colour and he very casually mentioned that he’d ‘carried the damn thing’!

Absolutely. It perfect the lines are razor straight especially when they were trooping the colours to the between the guards. They were really good and I am sure they didn't practise endlessly like the current trooping

From 2:36 you can hear a melody from or extremely similar to Mozart‘s „Non più andrai farfallone amoroso“ (Marriage of Figaro Act I), is this a regular fixture at the Trooping of the Colour? And how come? Is it deliberate irony and light-heartedness that in the opera, this aria mocks the soldier‘s life?
@Anonymoususer44569
@Anonymoususer44569 2 жыл бұрын
This melody from “The Marriage of Figaro” serves as the slow march of the Coldstream Guards. Each of the five guards (Coldstream, Grenadier, Scots, Welsh, and Irish) has their own slow march. For example, the slow march of the Grenadier Guards is “Scipio”, written by Handel. At each Trooping of the Colour, one guard regiment is chosen to troop their colour for the sovereign. In 1947, the Coldstream Guards had this particular honour, so the slow march of the Coldstream Guards was played when they marched past the sovereign in slow time. If the Irish Guards trooped their colour, then the slow march of the Irish Guards (“Let Erin Remember”) would be played, etc…. As for the reason why the Coldstream Guards chose this as their slow march, I’m not so sure. But I would like to think that they chose that melody to mock the notion that the aria is mocking soldiers

The story (I don't know if it is true or not) is that when the young Mozart was an 8 year old prodigy, giving concerts in London in 1764-65, he presented a little tune he had composed to the bandmaster of the Coldstream Guards. He later reprised the tune in the Marriage of Figaro. So the Coldstream Guards had it first. :)

@@davidjonathangudlaugson4768 - as I said it is not confirmed. It may be a tall tale spread later. However when the Marriage of Figaro was first premiered in London the producers were surprised that the audience already seemed familiar with the tune. The simple tune structure certainly seems the sort of thing a child might produce :)

Why the guards not used red tunic?
@KolibriMert
@KolibriMert Жыл бұрын
It was the first parade held after the Second World War, they likely had a multitude of reasons, many of the men shown were likely those that fought and with the rapid rotation of reinforcements I'm sure not all of them had their red tunics issued whereas all of them had their battledress uniform from fighting on the many fronts.

Clothes rationing lasted until 1949 in the UK. I doubt the public (which had rationing in some form or another 1940 to 1954) would have been amused at so many red tunics and trousers being tailored. The bearskins would also have to be prepared.

@@jorgexue5502 Yeah I just couldn't see too clearly and some newer uniforms kinda resembled the older service dress but if that is what he's wearing, who knows, maybe just because uniforms were in short supply? This was the first year back since 39, maybe he slimmed down too much for his new service dress during the war and had to go back to his younger man's clothes for this 😂

The was was only two years past, Britain was gripped by rationing of jst about everything (food, fuel etc) and was battling the huge financial cost of the war. Austerity reigbed and it was not yet appropriate to show the full splendour of dress uniform.
