CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Princess (Robin Wright Penn) mistakes a masked Westley (Cary Elwes) for a cad and pushes him down the hill, but then realizes that he is her lost love.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on William Goldman's novel of the same name, The Princess Bride is staged as a book read by grandfather (Peter Falk) to his ill grandson (Fred Savage). Falk's character assures a romance-weary Savage that the book has much more to deliver than a simpering love story, including but not limited to fencing, fighting, torture, death, true love, giants, and pirates. Indeed, The Princess Bride offers a tongue-in-cheek fairy tale depicting stable boy-turned-pirate Westley's journey to rescue Buttercup (Robin Wright), his true love, away from the evil prince (Chris Sarandon), whom she had agreed to marry five years after learning of what she had believed to be news of Westley's death. With help from Prince Humperdinck's disgruntled former employee Miracle Max (Billy Crystal), swordsman Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), and a very large man named Fezzik (Andre the Giant), the star-crossed lovers are reunited.
CREDITS:
TM & © MGM (1987)
Cast: Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest, Cary Elwes, Robin Wright Penn
Director: Rob Reiner
Producers: Norman Lear, Rob Reiner, Andrew Scheinman, Jeffrey Stott, Steve Nicolaides
Screenwriter: William Goldman

@@themanwithallthewrongopini3551 Not if your wits are sharp, I suppose. I used to coast downhill backwards on public roads on my bicycle as a kid. Sometimes I ended up in a ditch lol but never any serious injuries. I only landed in ditches occasionally because I sort of allowed it, going with the flow almost like playacting. It's a combination of youthful fun (fearlessness,) knowing your surroundings and trusting in your instincts.

What's amazing about this scene is they're essentially both working through pain. Obviously Buttercup is angry that Westley was taken from her (as she said, she "died that day"), and probably on some level feels guilty about becoming engaged to the prince. And Westley is bitter at Buttercup for giving up on him. If he had just shown up as Westley, he'd always be wondering if he could trust her. But through this disguise, he knows the truth, and gets to tell her the truth. Brilliant.

Brownie Dufour Well, if you think about it, she was told with absolute confirmation that he was dead, he's been gone for 5 years, and last she saw him he was barely an adult. Now he's a man: he has a wicked sense of humor that he never would have had when she last saw him, he has endured so many hardships that he is used to being harsh to survive, which is the way he treats her while their running, another characteristic she never would have considered her farm boy to have, least of all towards herself. Not to mention, it's pretty obvious that ever since he supposedly died she has become so depressed that she doesn't much bother observing things closely anymore. This was obvious, for example, when she tried to escape swimming right after Vizzinni stated that the water was infested with eels. So she probably didn't care enough at the moment to notice his eyes. All she cared about was expressing her hate for the man she thought had killed her first fiancee.
@deborahhanna6640
@deborahhanna6640 5 жыл бұрын
She is lost in her own memory. She probably has not even looked in his eyes because he is supposedly the person who killed her love. Basically, she doesn't consent to the wedding (in the book) she is coerced. She doesn't love Prince Humperdinck- she doesn't care he will make her a Queen. At that point she probably wouldn't even care that he set it all up to kill her- she just wants to watch the world burn. She shoves him with the full intention of murdering him.

Think he ought to get to know her first before pledging his unending loyalty and agreeing to do her bidding based on pretty face. However for the purpose of fairytale fantasy it is very sweet and ideal. However men were taught to trust women perhaps they ought not to have trusted because of movies like this that portrayed womankind as virtuous and fair when women are more complicated than this. And many have died at their hands thereby. You should only say ‘as you wish’ if she proves worthy of this. Don’t obey her without good reason. Save that for the marriage vows. Everyone is in a rush. She should have to qualify herself to you as much as you should wish to earn her trust, loyalty and affection. Also everyone’s dead so just bow out and hope for better on the new earth is actually what I would advise instead…

0:31 Now that Carey Elwes has revealed that he'd just broken a toe whilst riding Andre the Giant's ATV that day, I can't unsee the real reason he sits down so elegantly here (not wanting to put weight on the toe).

There are plenty of films before the 80s that had great sharpness and good lighting. Look at any of Kubrick’s or Hitchcock’s films. And there are hundreds of more examples.

It's only the 1980s, not the 1880s. Movies have been using 35mm film commonly since at least the 50s, whose native resolution is equivalent to something around 4K. It's just that home TVs/monitors haven't been ready to handle that uncompressed resolution until recently. By 1987, it had been 17 years since IMAX had first been used too, and seeing as they were capable of IMAX's original 12K resolution in 1970, it's only to be expected that films would look this good by the late 80s.

Often overlooked is the line "poor and perfect" wherein modern prose may have replaced 'and' with 'but'. Using the chosen verbage however implies that even Wesley's poverty was a trait to be admired alongside all of his other features. Buttercup doesn't love him in spite of this, she loves him all the more for it. Very powerful word choice.

As Wesley sits down on the tree branch, you’ll notice he only puts weight on one foot - this is because Carey Elwes had recently broken his toe and could barely walk on it. As he rolls over to buttercup to say “Can you move?” he also drags his foot for the same reason.
