The only problem I have with Annette is that her relationship with Richter feels a bit rushed in my opinion she went from neutral to angry then love interest real quick, I feel they didn’t expand on their relationship that much since they were mostly separated from each other most of the time

You know, I understand that there might be a nostalgic feeling for the original depiction of Richter and his girlfriend. But common, what would they have done with damsel Annette? I think having someone from another revolution not only acts as a way to strengthen the theme and team as a whole, but opens up the world and makes it feel more lived in. Edit/addition: I just wanna say I love her magic and the sort of “lore” it brings to the table. Being that magic is inherited and the type you get as well. Which leads me to wonder how Maria got her summoning powers and not so much her speaker mothers elemental powers. I’m guessing it’s something to do with how her father/the priest was able to summon the forge and get it working.

I never played before Rondo of blood, so I meet Anette in this animation and found her character very interesting. Was actually disappointed when I found out she was originally a purple hair girl with no more story than being a kidnapped damsel in distress.

I don’t see Annette as a race swap. If anything they just used the same name and made Annette into an new character with actual purpose and motivation and not just some NPC that is meant to be a love interest for the protagonist.

Honestly, I actually liked the main villainess Erszebet. I mean, sure Dracula is the MAIN big bad of the series, but you can only bring him back so many times before the whole "Oh no, Dracula's back!" plot point loses it's luster and the audience becomes apathetic.

I think my only problem with Annette is that she could have been her own character. She's interesting enough for that, and doesn't need to be 'Annette'.

I dont give a shit, i have no connection to the castlevania franchise, i just watched the shows, and so far this season is pretty cool and neat just like the previous ones. And look I understand bad forced changes, i hate Netflix's Cleopatra, i load most of disney movie changes. But this, this is comoletely fine. We have a vampire that can freaking transform into FUCKING QUETZALCOATL, we have a character that went from being a Damsel in Distress, to having powers based on african Gods that im seriously curious about learning more about. And so much more, the people behind the show clearly put on the work behind the scenes and it shows. All the people complaining seriously weird me out.

The original character didnt matter, they just want to be mad about a race swap. Honestly i did feel that they did spend too much time on her in the series while sidelining the main character, but thats when i thought this was going to be a stand alone series. It makes more sense now that i understand that it is intended to have multiple seasons.

As someone who has beaten numerous versions of Rondo of Blood, I cannot comprehend why anyone would give a shit about the changes made to Annette. The most interesting thing she did in the original was turn into a vampire in the bad ending route.

I don't care that Annette is a black character in Castlevania. My problem is that she should have been a new character altogether because white hand-me-downs don't have to be the norm. I WOULD like to see a story that's closer to what happens in the game, but with world building that enhances it.

Very different characters… in canon Annette is Maria’s older sister and Richter’s fiancé. In this they more or less created an original character who marginally happens to share Annette’s name. And Maria is made to be related to Richter when they aren’t related in canon. Also setting in game and show are completely different and story has almost nothing to do with the games stories.

Because girl, FANS, that is why. Fans care for their franchise.

Making Annette black inadvertently potentially makes the most powerful & final Belmont black as well. Julius is a descendant of Annette so if we get that far in the story just expect a even bigger uproar.

I've been trying to argue that the reasons people are complaining about Annette is because her story is weak not because of something silly or woke. They never really explored the themes around her. Mainly just introduced them with really poor pacing. Compared to Isaac who's whole story is beautifully done. Also Olrox is Aztec who had a native American lover! Zahn McClarnon did a really good job bringing it together

I think the reason that people don’t have a problem with Olrox’s race swap is because we rarely see indigenous representation in media. Compared to Annette, the only thing about Isaac that was changed was his race & backstory. Isaac was both a forge master in the game & anime. Meanwhile Annette went from helpless damsel to a badass, equipped with supernatural powers. A complete 180. So why not make her into an original character? Give her a nice French name besides Annette. Camille, Amelie, Celine, Anais, Delphine, Elise, Claire, Gabrielle. The list goes on

Yeah I never played the games but knew of them. Had a few friends who were into them. When Castlevania first came out and I remember doing my research and saying the series writers clearly had to put in work to get the storyline going. I honestly though the games they were based on were visual masterpieces with incredible storytelling. Anyways when Nocturne came out and I saw 1 the vampire succubus, I was indeed drooling. 2 Olrox, Lordy his body is gorgeous and he is a frickin cartoon and 3 as a Caribbean person and i student of history I was happy to see they linked the story to a pivotal moment not only in French history but Caribbean and world history. I’m here for it. There are some holes but they have done a good job linking back to African folklore and deity. Just like I need to get over that Olrox is a damn cartoon, gay and probably would never give me the time of day because I’m a woman ….. people need to get over that Annette is black!

My issue with Annette is she is to simple in appearance and she is a bit of a forced character. Shoot they didn’t even have to name here Annette. I have no problem with Annette being black. What I have a problem with is that she got a far more developed backstory than Richter and Maria, and even the villain, Elizabeth Bathory, who I don't give a fuck about. We honestly didn't need a whole episode focused on her and Edouard (I hope he dies soon tbh), because ok, the representation might have been good, but this is not a story about the Haitian revolution and slavery, or even about the French revolution, this is a story about the heir of a vampire hunters clan killing vampires. I get that they want to flesh things out, but the way they did it with Olrox was perfect. We didn't need a whole episode focused on Olrox backstory to love him as we do.

As someone who is a fan of the games, and part Native American(father's side), Specifically Mi'kmaq, the race swap of Orlox just pisses me off. I'd much rather see an original Native American Character than a race swap, that's just lazy. What's worse with Orlox is that not only did they go the lazy route of changing his race, but they also changed the nature of his characterization from the games. The only positive thing I see is that Netflix did hire a Native American Voice Actor. I would have rather seen Jumlin, a spirit of Native American, specifically Abenaki, folklore that feeds on the blood of the living. In the four seasons of the original show, Hector and Issac were both portrayed differently that their in-game counter parts, but at the same time they were clearly side characters with their stories interwoven to the main narrative. Personally while the side story was interesting they could have given them any names and it would have been exactly the same impact on the narrative, missed opportunity here. My issue with Nocturne's portrayal of Annette is that her role in the story is not the same. The the games she is Richter's call to action, who also happened to be Maria's sister. Being a whiter than white pasty European had nothing to do with it. Her role in the story doesn't match the source material. What we got with Annette in Nocturne was a self insert from the two black female writers to bring in their own heritage and replaced the main character's call to action with someone who should have been an original character! There was an Original Character in Nocturne, Edouard. Despite being an original character the way he fit into the story was unique and interesting, a night creature that still has it's soul from life and who can awaken the souls in others is a concept that I'm curious as to how they develop. Consider if the original Annette was left in place and we got this instead of the lazy race swaps: Replace Orlox with Jumlin, and we have Jumlin kill Julia Belmont, this leaves Richter's story arch mostly intact, and he would still have his call to action. Take the Annette we got in Nocturne and change her name to Jacqueline, which is a more traditional Haitian name than Annette, and Eduouard are chasing a Soucouyant, an actual vampire like creature from Caribbean folklore, who is traveling to join the Vampire Messiah. This would be a more interesting story to tell, and bring with it a more honest exposure to the Haitian culture. I'm not going to defend the Annette we got here. Its not woke it's forced inclusion, by means of removing the original character's role, hell they even nerfed Maria to give Annette center stage. What we got was someone with such great potential as an original character, who would probably get more acceptance by the overall fandom if she were one. But until writers stop being afraid to tell their own stories with their own characters, this is what we'll keep getting. Oh wait I forgot about Trese, the Filipino's told their story with their own characters and it was well received.

They made the character Annette so amazing, that she should have been an original character with a Haitian name similar to Annette. I just read "Skin Of The Sea" by Natasha Bowen and it made me smile so much to have a mainstream show mention Yoruba Gods that I just started learning about because of the book! The is the second time I'm commenting this, if Annette and Richter have children they will basically be Avatars!! We've seen the speakers do, Air, Water, Fire and now we throw in some Ogun - Earth! With Annette and Richter powers combined, I believe their children can save the world!

I usually find distateful when they change original characters just because but I don't mind much when the characters are not developed that much in the original material. I mean, I didnt really play Rondo of Blood but for the lore I know, Annette wasn't that interesting to me. Isaac had more "personality" I guess but his adaptation made him better. Overall I really liked Annette in Nocturne but Olrox Is my favorite new character and he was just a minor boss in symphony of the night.

Nocturne is absolutely insane! I didn't care when they made Alucard bi, I didn't care when they made Isaac black, and I don't care that Annette is black now either. All these changes for me evolved what was already good and made it more interesting to me. I've played Rondo of Blood and Dracula X Cronicles and the most annoying thing about these games are the girls we have to save. So getting rid of that cliche in this adaptation should be celebrated. Besides, powerful characters that survived a historical slavery past make the story richer and more believable to me. I'm a huge fan of the games and I love both Castlevania and castlevania nocturne. The only thing I didn't like is how weak they made Hector which is a fan favorite character. And is completely reduced to a man child slave pet for female vampires, making Carmilla even more annoying here. But that was only season 3. The rest is pretty awesome.

I think most fans expect to see the game made into a show. Annette is not a redesign of Annette, she is just a different person which happens to share her name with the video game character. She's actually much better than the video game character, who was barely a character to begin with. It would have been the same if she had stayed white. I snuck into my first R rated are movie blade Trinity One of my favorite TV shows as I got older was Stargate SG-1 Christopher judge (teal'c) was the only cast member that was in each and every single episode of Stargate. The show brought in people of all races at one point or another original Roles none which felt forced. These were popular shows many people I went to school with watched Regardless of color . I've been studying patterns for a while call me conspiracy theorist if you will but it seemed social media has been set on creating a divide between colors. It started off with simple memes popping up online continued to grow. Generally speaking when the peasants unite usually leads to the downfall the current rulers... when we no longer fight amongst ourselves we pay more attention to what they are doing

In my opinion they could have avoided the drama if they would have swapped the names of Annette and Tera. Tera is like the Annette from the games (blonde, green dress, immediate connection to Richter and Maria, becomes a vampire, etc) The Annette we have in Netflix could have been called Tera and it would make a lot of sense because of her cool earth powers!

Typically characters in stories that are intending to adapt something having significant changes bugs me (even the OG Percy Jackson movies bothered me by aging up the characters and making Annabeth a fucking brunette), but Castlevania seems to do a really good job still making them very good characters. Plus they tied her powers and backstory to her race in a really cool way. also from what I know this isn’t even super accurate to the games, which didn’t have a super significant plot to start with

If only people actually focused on a character rather than how they looked lol. Initial viewing yesterday i had more issues with annettes personality, but it dimmed down the next day. Because we have ti realize these characters are a few years younger than the main cast last series. Theyre not adults yet so theyre going to be rash and do/say dumb things more often. (The fact i learned trevor was in early 20s gagged me lol). Not direct spoilers but like....anyone who saw the trailera can piece together a certain character "dying" (Eduoard running in the rain, surrounded by vampires, and Annette crying in the rain....yeaj i knew he was getting killed there lol). All i can say is that im thankful for Annette kinda growing at least in the last 2 eps, so her and Ritcher arent so confrontational with each other. Cuz i legit facepalmed when Annette kepts on called Ritcher a "Fucking useless coward" TWICE, even after learning why hes having PTSD. Her going "it happened in the past so he needs to get over it"...... GURL, because of your PTSD Eduard is in the postion hes in lol (blowing their cover) like i totally understand why youre filled with rage at that moment but like cmon, youre with a group her doing a covert missionXD dont give your position away. Her playing the "i suffered more compared to Ritcher" card was just low lol. Like yeah you technically did, but at the end of the day you still both lived through trauma. I don't have a problem with the race swap. I just wanted more development for her. Her story and powers were really cool. We just had alot of characters to flush out and i think Annette and other characters suffered for it. I'm glad we're getting another season to explore everyone more and I'm excited Alucard is back. Looking forward to his dynamic with everyone and flashbacks on how his relationship with Trevor and Sypha ended. I'm already emotional thinking of him at their funerals 😢

The problem isn’t that she’s black. That’s reductive and a misunderstanding of the argument. The problem is that she’s a completely different character from the source with different lore and history. Netflix Annette could’ve been a completely different character and we would’ve been fine. The original Annette was Richter's childhood friend and girlfriend. She would’ve never badmouthed him, she was never a fighter, etc. And that’s fine, there is no need to retcon this character out. Even in the SNES release (albeit non canon compared to Rondo of Blood), she was written as Maria's older sister, which makes the race swap make even less sense. She is meant to be of Anglo-European descent. Netflix Annette is really cool. She has cool lore and cool powers, is good at fighting etc. But that’s a different character and should’ve been made a new character entirely to let her shine as an individual. Especially when the show writers try to force some chemistry between Richter and her, when she was previously unimpressed and hating on him, with there being ZERO chemistry being between them prior. It’s like they want her to be a badass independent woman, while also being Richter's loving girlfriend. It doesn’t work and it shouldn’t be forced. It’s literally not a problem about her being black, it’s a problem of her not being the same character yet being forced into a similar role. Just let her be her own thing. This extends to all the characters. Richter is a little bitch and is underpowered for the majority of the show. Maria would never call Richter a "dick" or "wanker", nor was she ever abrasive. These mfs swear way too often. Bartley become a God without much leadup. Downgrade from Carmilla. Alucard doesn’t need to be here until SOTN's plotline which happens 10 years later. Frankly, Edward and Orlox were the only compelling characters. Edward was an interesting addition, basically Devilman, although the Netflix writers made him useless. And Orlox was a beast, and his personality is pretty faithful to his lore. Him being gayer than Sin wasn’t a problem despite his sexuality being a new addition by the show; it didn’t violate his original characteristics. He is in the same position as Annette and only appeared in like one of the games officially, yet was adapted way better cause his lore personality was maintained. This was never about race. Even Castlevania Judgement, a spin off brawler released in 2008 for the Wii, despite not race swapping any of the characters, was heavily criticised by fans for completely altering and bastardising the designs and personalities of the characters. Again, this is pre Netflix Castlevania fans, people who have actually played the games, criticising the alteration of the source material in a spin off game. *TL;DR yes I’ve played and beaten many of the games, not that it makes a difference. Even though Annette was a minor character with like 5 minutes of screen time, why would that be an issue to expand on her existing traits for the Netflix series? Why do you assume that the only solution is to retcon her character entirely and make her a different character? Just have two characters. We don’t need to make compromises here.*

I'd just like to point out that Annette in Dracula X Chronicles does actually get turned into a vampire and becomes a boss if you fail to save her so her role in that was expanded a bit at least.

The amount of dislikes this video's gotten in only 5 days is very telling. But not for the reason you think.

My problem with Annette (and the entirety of this season, really) is that she's more a symptom of the bigger problem with Nocturne (and the previous show past the first season); the writers just don't seem to give a damn about the source material. Yes, Annette is a footnote with barely any plot relevance beyond "Oh Richter, save me before Dracula turns me into a vampire", but more importantly she's Maria's sister. (or old friend as yes, I know that there is a conflict over whether it should be considered canon considering the sister but was added retroactively with DX) Turn Annette into a kick-ass character? Absolutely, there are a trillion ways to follow rondo's plot beats without relying on the classic damsel in distress unable to defend herself; she could have sacrificed herself for the team, forcing them to go save her, she could have messed up during a fight and be defeated and kidnapped to be turned into a night creature, etc. Bring the Haitian revolution into the mix? Hell yeah, that's something that's barely ever touched in fiction, and it was a fascinating concept to see their side of magic. But was there really a need to break the original Annette's identity in its entirety and her ties to other characters to bring this plot? No, absolutely not. Netflix Annette could have been her own character, and it would have had the same effect without any impact whatsoever on the plot. Heck, Netflix Annette could have still been Richter's love interest if they really wanted to go that way for those two, all they would have needed is to find some interesting reason to have them break up, so he ends up with OG Annette later on. (Could have been interesting to explore the fears that come with dating someone that fights by your side and that you could see die at any moment, for example) Nothing even stops them from bringing them back together, as it's never confirmed that Richter and Annette become anything further after he saves her. Same shit with Tera, who aside the name has absolutely nothing to do with the original other than perhaps a very loose connection to religion through Emmanuel, who, if he's supposed to be Shaft, would be extremely stupid considering Shaft's concept as a character. And the worst of all are Erzsebet and Drolta, who, like Tera, have absolutely ZERO connection with their game counterpart. Heck, even the bond between the two is completely messed up as Drolta was her teacher, not her underling. Not to mention the fact that Erzsebet's plan of eternal night is absolutely stupid from a vampire perspective even from the show's unique lore as they are scientists, they should know the terrible consequences that a lack of sun would have on their own survivability in the long run. (though you could hand-wave it as them being short-sighted) Moreover, there's also the bigger problem that is that Elizabeth Bartley and Drolta are the antagonists of Bloodlines, a game that takes place over TWENTY years after Rondo (and thus Nocturne) and yet Drolta's already dead. The writers are just interested in grabbing names from the games to go "HEY LOOK, SEE? REFERENCES!" rather than take what's already existing and expand on it. Creative liberties are fine so long as they are kept in check, at some point it stops being creative liberties and instead veers straight into the 'loosely inspired'. Which is not what they advertise these shows as.

I also said that as long as the characters are well written and thought out rather than being "diversified" to appease a certain audience, then the swap would be unimportant. I absolutely loved Annette, she wasn't overbearingly annoying for the sake of it. She has flaws, just like Richter, Maria, Mizrak and Olrox.

My disdain for overfetishization of African and Mesoamerican cultures is that, they NEVER do stories in those settings prior to the arrival of Europeans, as if the only moment they're "proud of their roots" is when there's a white guy in the story that can be blamed for all the bad things that happen in it. They won't dare make a story with a purely black or indigenous cast precolony, otherwise their villains will also be non-white, and they won't have foreigners to blame for the heinous acts they commit. Compare that to the mainstream reach we see in stories set in ancient Japan or China, they do fantasize about living in that setting, not about feeling like victims.

To me, this is an alternate timeline set in an alternate universe in the Castlevania franchise. We have the original timeline. The Gabriel Belmont timeline. The Netflix timeline. You can play or watch whichever you want and enjoy whichever one that truly speaks to you.

I just finished this series and was BLOWN AWAY! I’m an ATLA geek and have tried a few anime series but they’re too slow for me. This show was action packed from pilot to its finish. I can’t wait for the second season!

Problem I had new castlvania writing and pacing. There were parts of the episode a bit rushed. Also Richter felt wasn't good enough to be lead. Annette's friend didn't like him. His singing was annoying. I did like Annette back story and reason. I will admit I don't like some changes because I get it adaption to series you want to do something different. The show should've had a bit more episodes to give time for some characters developed maybe two episodes or so

Netflix should make their own Castlevania that took place in Africa by the help of Konami.

yeah I said folks who’re still complaining about the “source material” when it comes to Annette needs to not watch the show🤷🏿‍♀️. If it’s not media that’s stereotypical, violent, or displaying our trauma…people believe black people don’t belong in other genres (fanstasy and syfy especially). Her backstory (Haitian Revolution) fits well with the plot (French Revolution). I don’t wanna s*** on Olrox bc native peoples deserve representation but they should’ve inspired his character from indigenous peoples who were colonized by the French (like the Algonquin peoples) not an Aztec vampire. But it doesn’t surprise me that folks ignore actual problems with this show (pacing, character interactions, and writing) to s*** on a beautiful dark skinned black woman 🤦🏿‍♀️

I'm ngl i didnt play the original game but i watched videos about the original story. And I'm so happy it was changed in the anime series because having a basic damsel in distress character is beyond boring.

Hard to find an actual review of the show because of the fake outrage of the race swapping. I dont like Annette but not because shes black, but her character wasnt well written.

I think it’s really weird how people ignore the character growth that Annette had in the later episodes just to frame her as this perpetually angry character. It’s much more interesting to me to see a flawed and complex character who changes and grows into a better person, than a character who is just perfect from the start. That moment where she reconciled with Richter was genuinely very sweet.
