There is so much interlapping of real life in series like Psycho Pass and others as A.I. and dystopian society catches up to the real world. I wonder how many more series will fail to miss the mark in the end once the reflection between media and reality are essentially the same. But even more scary, how quickly our lives will match the series we used to watch in awe and fascination. Incredible analysis!

Thank you YES 🙌🏽 I absolutely love this take and I know I give the show a lot of crap for not giving us the satisfying ending of taking down the obviously corrupted system with so many elements that already exist in the real world, which makes it so horrifyingly relevant, but I actually think that, even though the main character backed out of physically destroying the system, she still didn’t really give up on challenging how it’s used in society. People can’t be complacent even if we don’t know the answers yet. And that’s the kind of hope core that we need some times.

I haven't seen Psycho Pass myself yet, but based on the first couple minutes of this video I'm guessing it's one of those things that starts with an absolutely amazing premise but then utterly fails to truly flesh it out in considering certain nuances and systemic implications. Like my first thought at the concept of people being policed for stress levels (because that predicts likelihood of commiting a crime, apparently?) is... What about autistic people? People with PTSD? People with ADHD? Schizophrenia? Etc etc. Does the story ever address this and how much overlap with eugenics it has? And not just neurodivergences and mental illnesses -- what of people with physical disabilities? Chronic illnesses? Pregnancy complications? Yadda yadda. Most stressors are completely valid and aren't really going to increase the likelihood of commiting a crime. For those that do increase the likelihood the stress is more of a correlation than the cause -- like in the case of poverty. Yeah, that'll stress someone out, but it's the material lack of basic needs which actually motivates theft, while simultaneously causing stress. There does seem to be some nuance, as you mentioned "lower stress" offenses would have punishments like losing one's job, while higher ones can lead to prison. But that immediately makes me go to systemic feedback loops: someone already has a bit of stress about something, then lose their job.... isn't that inevitably going to cause greater stress, therefore greater punishment (therefore greater stress, therefore....)? It's a great premise because the sci-fi aspect so easily lends itself as a metaphor to explore real world systemic issues such as racism, sexism, ableism, classism, etc. And it's scarcely even a metaphor when it comes to neurotypical hegemony. But based on your opening critique of the protagonist apparently choosing not to dismantle the system itself in the end...ehh, I don't have much hope. Sounds like it's gonna be yet another "just gotta replace a few bad apples with some good ones" capitalist realism-esque narrative. Though I suppose I should reserve my judgement until after this video and perhaps watching the show itself. Still, these are the things I'm gonna be on the lookout for in assessing.

Guess I'll have to watch the show to really get my answers since it sounds like a nuanced mix of the show discussing all this but also possibly not coming up with a fully satisfying conclusion (or at least the protagonist herself doesn't.) But I can say you yourself certainly addressed all of that in this video, so kudos 👍

> People with PTSD? Pretty much all locked up or hunted. The Sybil system takes out anybody who looks like they can imagine criminal behavior. Actual crimes are irrelevant.

Yes 🙌🏽 so much media have been warning us about this especially in Japanese anime that’s super futuristic and years ahead of the whole addiction to technology and super controlling government dilemma that’s sparking in the west. From Ghost in the shell and Akira and Ergo Proxy and I just posted another video on Cyberpunk Edgerunners that takes a dark twist to the future and is so sad if you don’t pay attention to the signs!!

Interesting vid. Haven't watched the series but maybe I will now. Always interested to hear some Foucault. Sadly it reminds me of the devastation in Gaza. Israel has highly advanced AI and uses a system they call "Gospel" to select targets for bombing. They train the US police as well and it's only a matter of time before one day we have the buzz of drones over "high threat" regions of many countries. Does this show explore "collateral damage" insofar as punishment? How many innocent civilians are "worth" the guilty target? A monstrous thought to leave it to an AI to not only be judge, jury, executioner but also the calculator of how many people in proximity are expendable.

Yes, it’s haunting how this is active in every conflict happening today; the way systems that are more powerful than other groups of people are able to turn their lives into just a number that doesn’t even have human value and takes away accountability from all the violence that happens. It really makes me understand why Foucault was so skeptical about the justification of science to define how we operate as a human society.

Have you seen Psycho Pass Providence? I haven't seen much of Psycho Pass past season 1, but the way Akane's character arc ended in the Providence movie was... interesting. i havent really seen anyone talk about it. I really liked this video it was great!

Ugh I can’t wait to watch Providence! They did Alan’s dirty but also well well well isn’t it the consequences of her own actions 🙄🙄 but these little cameos give so much more detail into how this corrupted society operates it literally intentionally screws people over for a false sense of security! I really hope they stick with the characters we got and push the main story forward (albeit the newbies are charming)
