I have the same struggle for years.. Full size keyboard is from the no mouse era, and totally wrong today. At those times computers were chunky, who cares the area a numpad consumes? It's still there because some "I crunch number" dudes think it's wise having a calculator like keyboard, also some other "Ohh someday I need" hoarders think it's needed.. My wife is one them. She only uses numpad when entering the exam results. That's once a month.. For 3 hours a month sake, she prefers placing mouse a light years far away.. %99 of the time that area stays untouched.. If it were 20 years ago, I would agree the claim. But today we have wireless peripherals, why not have separate numpad?

Yeah you're right! The full sized keyboard is bloody annoying with the over reach! Can't do it. Had the same problem with the MX keys. Had to get rid of it

You can also use 3 fingers to drag items on the trackpad. I've always found that accessibility option useful if I don't want to click to drag.

my logitech trackpad i just double tab and then move my finger to drag. if i get near the edge of the pad i can use my second finger to keep moving.

I had the exact same problem with the full size keyboard. I am having a hard time to reach my track pad on the right all the time. I switched to the white smaller keyboard track pad set.

I have both, but love the black one the best, it feels natural for me as far as typing and love have the numerical keys handy, plus it matches my iMac as well as my X-Pen graphic , it just looks and feels amazing. The white feels too small and the number keys feels off, and you are right it gets dirty really fast.

i got this set up , i use the mouse for clic and select in a screen .... a use the track pad on the left to make gesture . Very accurate when i work in multi task

Noooo, I LOVE this set-up! I have, from left to right: trackpad, full size WIRED keyboard with the typing portion centered to my body, then mouse. If you are browsing the web or something, gestures/scrolling with left hand and precision pointing using a comfortable mouse in the right is a DREAM. Then, when you are doing something that requires typing, the main portion of the keyboard is ergonomically centered. You could accomplish the same goal with they TKL keyboard, but I like having a num pad available. I would like to find a good quality bluetooth num pad, so I could put it on the left or right of me, depending on use case. P.S. In fact I am using the old apple mouse, clear with white underneath from earlier iMacs. I love the look and shape of it, and the fact that it's just one giant button is super appealing to me for some reason. When I need a "right click" the trackpad or control key work, and my left hand is already in that position. I also need a bigger desk mat :(

Great video. I have the space grey full-size magic keyboard 2 and I too wish they sold the mini version in space grey. Also have the Logitech MX Master 3 and just bought the Trackpad. I completely agree with you that it takes up too much space and feels off. I am really not a fan of the white keyboard and I like the Logitech mouse so I may return the Trackpad. I know its expensive but I was thinking about putting the black keys on the white keyboard if I can do this without breaking anything.

I realized the same thing, the only way to use those numeric keyboard is put the mouse below the desk , we need two steps to use those... the numeric keyboards can centralize...

I read a comment about "is this a problem?" before getting to the part where he describes the issue so I was curious. Then he proceeded to describe the issue I have. I recently got the trackpad. My desk is small and I am sort of ambidextrous with mouse in one side and trackpad in the other. I have the keyboard with the numeric keypad and struggle to have the keyboard centered. It's really annoying when you spend hours in front of the computer. See we are all different and what it is not an issue for one human, it is for another.

If you haven't tried, I find that for "Enable dragging", "three finger drag" is smoother than "with drag lock". Then use four fingers swipe up/down for "Mission Control" and "App expose".

Thanks for pointing that, I was using three finger drag for many years but thought apple canceled it cause it wasn't in the trackpad preferences anymore. Don't make sense its at the accessibility window...

Are you serious?! People have been using full size keyboard + mouse for most of the last 30-40 years. So THIS is default, THIS is where the mouse is supposed to be, not closer to the left hand. That's not a problem of the magic keyboard but your personal habit lol :D

I believe the standard size keyboard with my mouse is why I'm having horrible shoulder and traps pain mainly on my right side. Currently trying to figure out an alternative set up for video editing/mograph. I care 0% about how it looks. I just want to not be in pain from tensing my right arm all the way up through my traps 40 hours a week. I need longevity and mobility. Right now I'm testing out my medium intuos 4 with the magic standard keyboard and a crappy basic mouse....it's way to wide of a set up. Thinking a setup like yours could be a solution. Instead of the apple magic mouse, I'm considering the logitech mx vertical mouse.

Nice one, Apple do a 2 weeks returns policy so give it a go and let me know how you get on. Another thing you can do is build some muscle around the shoulders and traps - nothing heavy, just 2kg free weight shoulder/arm movements to get the support muscles growing.

Same here, the vertical Mouse didn't do it for me, but the MX Ergo (the trackball model) has been helpful. I've also recently bought and MX Keys Mini, also think the full size keyboard was the true source of the problem, but still got to give it more time to confirm. I'm now thinking about adding the trackpad to use with my left hand, that way I can release my right hand a little more.

@@natalirivero467 nice! I've been using the vertical mouse for 3 years now and love it! Even got some coworkers hooked on it. I still use the standard apple keyboard. I learned I was tensing my right shoulder and getting pain bc my chair was too low for my desk, and as a result my right shoulder was hiked up. Lately, I am doing a lot of chest opener yoga stretches and avoiding any stretches for the back since those muscles are already overly stretched and weak. I do banded exercises to strengthen my traps and lats. I also do some isometric ab exercises. And I still get dry needling and manual PT every 2 weeks.

@@SDWits I'm glad you're ok, I bought the Apple trackpad and found that using both hands instead of just the right one, helps a lot. It's very easy to use the trackpad with the left, I had disable the right click o the corner (I use two fingers tap for that instead), so all physical clicks are your regular clicks, that makes it easier for the left hand. My screen was also a little too high, with all of these changes, I'm not in pain anymore, I do get stressed sometimes so my muscle would tighten but it's just not painful as it used to.

But, it's a full sized keyboard! We grew up with full sized keyboards. The full size magic keyboard is brilliant. The thing that annoys me about the smaller magic keyboard is some of the keys are small. The other thing about you ragging on the full size keyboard, your track pad is on the left side of the smaller keyboard. What about if you're right handed? Guess what happens? Oh wait...that's right. You have to move your hand over the track pad to get to the mouse. Really a nothing complaint.

It's been like that since 2015, though they just recently refreshed the keyboard on the MacBook Pro so probably around the next iMac refresh they might change it to your kinda keys.

The only reason I got the numeric keyboard instead of the regular one is because I hate the damn tiny arrow keys from the regular keyboard. I couldn't care less about the numbers, but this keyboard is so big that I have to move my hand a lot to reach my Magic Trackpad. I'm reconsidering the numeric keyboard. I might return this one and go with the regular one even though I hate the damn tiny keys.

Along with the habitual NO SHOW APPLE Air mat , the failed introduction of an equally elusive Black variant of a smaller keyboard is really hard to fathom , clearly a pattern developing here as they refuse to offer AirPods in anything other than boring white , Some unfortunate fanboys will have just experienced yet another underwhelming keynote that once again failed to meet expectations , certainly the magic of these once special events died when steve jobs left the building . Cooks presentation is as grey and boring as most of his product releases these days which is the total opposite of what we once experienced , remember the drama of 'just one more thing ' seems a lifetime ago now , but it held the viewer transfixed until the very end and invariable it stunned the audience . To conclude , BLACK tech matters APPLE so show us some !

Yeah it's a bit of a transition using the left hand for the Trackpad, but you kinda get used to it. The good thing about the magic mouse is that it still supports most of the scrolling and swiping tasks, so you can use the Trackpad for only the serious stuff at first.

For all my peeps that are disappointed with the maximum mouse speed, use the following command in your terminal to adjust it beyond that maximum: defaults write -g com.apple.mouse.scaling 7.0 The default is 3, which is the "max" when selected through the mouse preferences. I personally prefer 7 to be the most comfortable for me but as far as I know, it can go up to 99. Never actually tried it, though. After you push this command through, you'll have to log out and back in for it to take effect. You can thank me later.
