ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas.
After graduating from Austin College in Texas, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his
dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a
production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion
shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap,
L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.

Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man.
He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to
his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service.
After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his
life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality
was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count
everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences
helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally,
and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary
importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and
homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths
that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and
joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of
Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

My daughter was in Grease in high school. It's hard for parents to say no to that sort of thing, when the sex education in schools is already such a concern. I spoke out about sex ed in New Zealand in the mid 1990's and was condemned as a "religious nutter". The parents I talked to did not respect my request to leave the kids out of it, and told their children so my daughter was humiliated. The headmaster agreed fully with my concerns, but it was out of his hands at the time because parents voted in material and teachers selected what they wanted to teach at the time. He regretted that conservative parents didn't bother attending meetings, so that those with an agenda had their way. Now we have a set sex ed programme which indoctrinates the LGBTQ+ beliefs and values and promotes sexual activity. Traditional values are presented as narrow-minded, legalistic and unkind.

@@alexandraasbury9974Obviously they are both pretty- what is more important is that they both had a reputation as a nice girl. They needed a nice girl to then turn into a “bad” girl. Glad Marie had the scruples to turn down such a big role. Olivia took the role, stayed a nice person, but I agree the message was incredibly irresponsible. I wonder if ONJ ever privately regretted that. I’m not sure she was particularly religious. Marie probably had more of a religious profile and maybe a stronger sense of moral responsibility for her projects.

Back in 1978, Mad Magazine satirized the moral issue of “Grease” well. Sandy appears in her sleazy back outfit and says, “I’ll become a sl-t to get my man: what a message for the youth of America!” Tragic that this movie was so successful. Ironic that it was Mad Magazine (not known to be the guardian of America’s morals) saw the insidious message of the movie, while many in America thought it was a harmless, coming-of-age movie.
@tamething1
@tamething1 3 жыл бұрын
Mad Magazine was often quite good at piercing through the crud to make a point. Eg., I remember a cartoon panel showing two girls (buck teeth, overweight/underweight, etc.) walking past two boys, who complained about how ugly the girls were. The next panel showed the two boys, who had the exact same physical defects the girls had.

@@KM-zn3lx What doesn't seem to get talked about in here is how he changed his whole personna to be w/ her as well. The movie was very sexualized, but there was still a very good message at the end. I kinow everyone is focusing on how Sandy was willing to change herself, but Danny was too. So I always took it as a story of love finding a way. In the end, they were both willing to try and change to be together, and found out that neither of them had too. There was also a very strong theme of how the nice girl won in the end, despite all the peer pressure otherwise. The permiscuous girl almost ended up pregnant, the nice girl, Sandy ended up winning in the end. So those seem to be strong messages lost.

As an early teen in the 70”s, I loved that movie because I grew up in a christian home that I saw as prudish and ugly. I wanted to be beautiful. I wanted to get the handsome boy. My clothing changed, to my parent’s dismay, and my thoughts about sexuality and boys was continually drifting away from pure to degraded. Books and movies and music were all influential in that change in my thought life. And that movie was a huge part of that. However, after I went as far as I was willing to go in my sin, I turned back to Jesus, and made him Lord. When I saw that movie again, I was appalled at what it was suggesting to young women. That good and clean and pure was really repulsive, revolting and disgusting. As I listened to Becket, I literally could hear the hiss of the Serpent behind the lyrics of those songs. As someone has said already, we are the frog in the pot, we are the cucumbers in the pickling juice, and we cannot get the stink off us anymore. Praise the Lord that He can cleanse our hearts, and one day will give us new beautiful bodies to go with it.

I did not like Beauty and the Beast because the beast was so moody and actually violent with the little enchanted objects that were alive. And Belle was the only one that could calm him. Red flags everywhere! Moody, sullen, violent man. But he would never hurt YOU! It made me think of all the children growing up in homes with domestic violence. Always trying to calm and sooth the violent adult so they don't get hurt or someone else get hurt. Watching Mom try to calm and sooth their violent dad so she or they don't get hurt. And the kids often don't see it as wrong or unusual because it's all they've ever know. And along comes Disney studios, making the hero of the movie a moody violent beast that throws very fragile living Christmas decorations around and tries to strangle the whistle. I find it infuriating. Totally normalizing family violence and the idea of the good little victim taking responsibility for the abuse.

You too? I used to think of the Mary Tyler Moore Show as innocent fun. But when I binge-watched the entire series a couple of years ago, I was appalled at how many times and ways they snuck in the insinuation that marriages never last, and/or adultery is pretty much inevitable, and it's normal to still be dating like a teen in your 30s & beyond. Same with WKRP, and others. Also, so many sitcoms from the late '60s on featured single parents that I began to wonder if the writers had no clue what a functioning marriage looked like, or were just too lazy to bother with the complexities of it.

Yes, we are all the frogs who have been slowly boiled to death. I was born in the 50’s and grew up with I Love Lucy, Ozzie and Harriet, Donna Reed, Leave it to Beaver and other wholesome shows. I remember in I Love Lucy, they didn’t even sleep in the same bed and couldn’t mention the word pregnant when she was pregnant in real life. Then in the 70’s we had TV shows like Laugh In, Shin dig, All in The Family, Maude, One Day At A Time, WKRP IN Cincinnati, Mash, and they started getting more laced with sexual undertones. The 80’s brought Dynasty, Dallas, Taxi, Miami Vice and so on. The slow boil of all of us frogs, little by little and here we are in Sodom and Gomorrah.

I was only 10 and was teased in the worse way when I couldn’t help but stare at Sandys beautiful behind in that spandex, and shaking that behind. It was my first time seeing something suggestive and now as an adult male, I realized how disturbed that movie was. I won’t even allow my kids to watch it. I think movies can influence because many of my friends were in love with naughty Sandy and thinking goody two Sandy was boring. It's ironic that this movie is supposed to be about a woman becoming liberated when it is just the same drivel as previous generations' ideas about women being secondary/ less than men. All of it -- the vulgarity, the immoral sexuality, the misogyny, the glorification of rebellion -- are ungodly and hateful. God created men and women for so much more.

When we define ourselves by our sexuality we are defining ourselves by our most carnal and unsophisticated instincts. We are reducing culture to it's lowest common denominator. I'm guessing they used older actors because of the sexualised content, imagine if you had kids playing these roles and singing those lines. The film would have looked very different, and exposed the agenda here, the sexualisation of children. It's an awful story really; the two main characters start out with a genuine affection for each other, and by the end of the film social pressure has turned this into a relationship based on sex. The name of the film itself 'Grease' implies something being made dirty. I'm positive this was all intentional. We are presented with something truly debased, but because it's wrapped up in a musical, with catchy tunes and dance routines, we don't notice.

I agree with your assessment. I am a baby boomer, born in ‘58 and graduated high school in ‘76. We were “taught ” that sex out of wedlock was cool and ok. Do whatever felt good. We were led to believe that Grease was so fun and “wholesome”. I’m appalled that later as parents we actually let our preteen children watch it as “family viewing”. Hollywood and the entertainment industry have always put “hidden messages” into their dialogue and lyrics under the guise of “appropriate for everyone” viewing and listening. Stockard Channing’s character is clearly jealous of Sandy and living dangerously out of lack of self-respect-we see that she thinks she is pregnant ad a result of her “liaison” and not as a good thing. The other Pink Ladies are obviously as “pure” as Sandy but they are just not as naive. It’s sad that American Culture STILL puts innocence and naïveté in a negative light and praises sexual expression over character and morality.

Another Disney movie we walked out of was the Hunchback of Notredame, the scene where the priest , supposedly a man of God lusts after Esmeralda and sees lust made visible in the flames of his fireplace that morph into naked, gyrating Esmeraldas was shocking and completely inappropriate for a cartoon that purported to be for children.

I was shocked when I first watched Grease as a 19 yr old. Why did Sandy have to change? Nothing was wrong with her as she was. The others were cynical and over their heads in a sexual world they were not prepared for. They really needed to drop the act and revisit their youth and innocence, instead of pretending to be 20 something actors. LOL Backwardsville. I see Grease as the anti-Pollyanna, the movie where a young sweet girl (orphaned child of missionaries) is new in town and changes everyone's outlook to be positive and thankful. I know it is made fun of, but it is a nice movie - I think I'll make sure my grandkids see it soon. America is a mission field. We need Sandy in school - only stronger and sure of herself as she is because the Sandy we need is a Christian girl who brings out the best in everyone she becomes close to.

So as you were sharing the lyrics, I was realizing how bad they are. Wow. But yes, yet another movie with the message that traditional values are bad, boring, and out of touch. I'm also noticing with different shows/series these days how often the alternative lifestyle storyline is woven in through with one of the characters, etc. So as a culture, we're slowly becoming indoctrinated to accept anything as normal and we're also being dared to question or challenge it. This episode is a great reminder to constantly be on guard to ensure that our thinking remains aligned with scripture.

I didn't realize how much this movie encouraged me to view female seduction and sexuality as power. I think myself and many women desire a kind of power over men....makes me wonder about God's words to Eve after the fall "your desire will be for your husband and he will rule over you". It conveys a sense of toxic co-dependence as a result if the Fall with women being consumed with wanting a man's attention (not that this true in every case) but no doubt the Fall set us up for a certain toxic dynamic between men and women..

Interesting the word that is translated as desire has actually the meaning of animosity. God is describing to Adam and Eve what happens when relationships between men and women are not based on God and godly principles they end up hating each other " Your animosity will be towards your husband and he will rule unjustly over you,"

@@esmeraldagreen1992 Esmeralda- You obviously have studied the Bible waaay more than I. Please can you explain how a Hebrew word meaning "animosity" can be translated into "desire" and actually be in a version of our Bible? I have been skeptical of translations for a long time, and bought a Greek concordance for that reason. But we are talking Old Testament now, and it really worries me that these crazy changes are being made. I mean, the difference between "desire" and "animosity"! Lord help us!

The year Grease came out (1978) another movie came out called An unmarried woman and I watched it then as an unbeliever and loved it. But I watched it a couple of years ago and it was filled with sin! So thrilled to be adopted into God's family! As for Grease I remember that Rizzo thought she was pregnant and at the end of the movie she got her menstrual cycle! Happy ending for Rizzo right!? 😥 Thank you for the great analysis of this movie! Your exegesis of the Grease soundtracks is quite refreshing and sobering. You have spoken in the spirit of the Sons of Issachar: "From the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do..." 1 Chron 12:32. We need to take a closer look at the influence and indoctrination of our youth through music that makes them oversexualized, insolent and violent.

Excellent Becket. This is a practical example of Carl Trueman's "expressive individualism" being preached by the culture. This is a different "gospel" of self-fulfillment that is preached at us all the time in culture today, and it does not tolerate rivals.

When this first debuted in 1978, I took my mother to see it b/c she grew up in the 50s and I thought she would enjoy seeing the clothing and dancing and 50s flavor. I ignored the sexual themes b/c that is what you do when you are a Christian and you watch film or art that celebrates sin. The real themes that you expose are truly soul deadening and sadly very much approved of and accepted today.

I appreciate you - thank you. I grew up Catholic. I’ve been born again for 33 years, praise God! The song that influenced me (not positively) was the song by Billy Joel “Only the Good Die Young” (written in 1977). I loved that song, danced to that song, sang it at the top of my lungs! Now I hear it and I’m sad because it has become an anthem for our culture. Now I listen primarily to Christian artists because I love the lyrics and can sing & dance to the Lord! Yes, I made choices in those days that were clearly influenced by the culture and not by my belief in God’s Word. I am thankful for a loving Savior! ✝️🙏🏻

I think the line 'what are we doing here...? ties up with being snapped back into reality when we realize that sometimes peer pressure can rule us if we allow it to. I saw this movie in my mid- teens & absolutely loved it for the song's tunes & the colorful cast- but when I watched it again in my older years-I also became acutely aware of what Becket speaks of. Also, this movie expressed alot of what went down in the 60's albeit a milder version I am sure. In looks, Danny appeared reminiscent of Elvis..& remember what a stir that beautiful man caused with his amazing voice...& let's not forget the how the Beatles took the world by storm with their songs & haircuts- parent's locking their girls away, etc. Thanks for sharing this perspective, Becket- all your points are SO valid. I enjoy watching your videos & listening to you- you appear to be a true Gentleman which is so refreshing! Peace be with You & God Bless! PS- You might want to try singing- I think you have a good singing voice! Perhaps join Chynna in a Gospel Album? Listen to Elvis's Gospel Songs! xx

The song from the last scene is actually one of me and my husband's songs because it's how we feel about each other which I think is awesome. I think repressing our sexuality like Sandra did in the first half is dangerous and acting how she did in the end is bad if done outside of marriage. Which is why the Bible encourages young people to marry in man and woman unions. Sex is a gift from God within his boundaries. But it's not needed to survive. People have made it into an idol to be worshipped. I'm so thankful there is no sexuality in heaven. It's honestly become such a burden in these times.

We have a much higher calling and that is as the Bride of Christ, beautifully dressed in white all because of His purchasing our salvation through His perfect life, His death for our sins, and His resurrection because death could not hold Him in the grave. How can we not love Him who demonstrates such love for us and makes us His beloved bride.

Great analysis Becket! The culture and media reveals where the world is headed and how that contrasts what God has shown us to be true. Interesting this movie is now seen as wholesome, performed as middle school theater productions etc (maybe they edit some stuff??) I've also noticed lately that very sexual hip hop songs from 20 years ago are now showing up in commercials for generic things like laundry detergent, funny how the culture becomes numb to what was once seen as vulgar, and it becomes normalized. Thanks for this ❤

At first, I thought that this was going to be a boring episode and how wrong I was! Your analysis was so good and important for Christian society. I was about 21 years old when Grease came out and although it made me feel uncomfortable, I couldn't quite put my finger on the reason. I was a Christian and was raised in a Christian family but I remember feeling, after watching the movie that I should try to be a bit more "sexy" or maybe a bit ashamed of my Christian stance on purity., Interesting to look back and see how sublte the rise of immorality was upon America. And it is sad to me to reflect upon my Christian culture that embraced worldly entertainment much more than pursuing Jesus and holiness.

I never watched Grease-but watched many of the other shows you mentioned. I remember working on our farm in the morning, finishing chores then running in to watch Be-Witched while my mom finished making a huge farm breakfast. After breakfast we always had family worship time. As a Christian adult in my mid 40s with children, I don’t know why my parents didn’t make the connection back then to turn the TV off. So many of those shows seemed light hearted and funny but we know the real truth. All Satan has to do is mix in a little error with a whole lot of truth and bam-deception. We are very careful what our children watch. Never TV. Recently we steamed little house on the prairie on Amazon and you have to watch a few commercials. Even the commercials were satanic in nature. It was so disturbing. You can’t let your guard down a single moment. God Bless you and your ministry -
