I, Typoh. Discuss the Problem with Modern Streaming Services in particular my issues with the model in which competing streaming services to Netflix such as HBO Max and Disney + have adopted recently, throwing away the binge-watching format in exchange for a more standard one a week release schedule. Also for the sake of algo the MCU shows suck and I don't like them (next video topic :D) also in ways this video is a 'In Defence of Netflix' type video as I'm not exactly upset at them, this isn't a 'The Problem With Netflix' type video lol.

I respect people who prefer the binge format, but because one of the things I like about watching a new show is the Fandom and discussion around the show, I prefer weekly for that. It also allows for great episodes to stew in my mind for a longer time. Let's me and the only discussion focus on a smaller part of teh whole without just the whole thing being relevant.

I agree, I’d be a liar if it wasn’t fun to just sit down with a friend and talk about the new episode of a show. Also thanks for commenting :)

Meh fandoms can be pretty toxic as well just look at the rwby reddit community , the arrowverse shippers who forced felicity to take over as arrow's main lead , the steven universe fandom that bullied a tumblr artist and almost caused them to commit suicide for not drawing rose quartz fat and the entirety of the rick and morty fandom.

A downside, in regards to the traditional weekly release format, is that with so many shows coming out, it can be difficult to keep track of everything; every show, every plotline, character names, etc. Shows that strike a healthy balance are those that come out weekly, but last 1hr 30m and only have a limited run, two or three episodes, i.e. Sherlock. Then again, simply writing the show, with the forethought that the show will be either episodic or binge-able can solve a lot of the criticisms. Excellent video, new sub!

This is why I like episodic TV series. Supernatural is 15 seasons long and there is an overarching story that gets built in the background or a looming threat for the season finale but each episode has it's own beginning, middle and end which gives it a feeling of accomplishment. Shows like The Walking Dead just have literally dead episodes that don't do anything, you could skip them and not miss anything. Episodic shows suffer from filler episodes but they're usually there to give the viewer a break from a heavy or intense arc. Game of Thrones was amazing for that reason, it's just a shame the quality disappeared in later seasons.

I think weekly episodes might ne the right way to go from now on in streaming for the big titles of these services. The shows longevity and the discourse around it goes for longer and fans have this weekly excitation factor wanting to come back. Binging feels almost like fast food when you think about it. Amazon does in an interesting way as you mentioned, they release three first to get you into it and then go weekly

I actually think there's actually a bigger thing that's killing Netflix that not many people are talking about. The thing is, when people subscribed to Netflix back in say 2014, nobody was there to the watch original programming that they shove in your face nowadays, they just wanted to watch the damn Bee Movie or whatever else was there and was familiar to the users. Sure many users discovered new shows too, but I think it's the acquired programming that was already familiar to people which made Netflix successful. Nowadays when you look at Netflix though, they're just pushing all these random shows nobody has ever heard of before. Netflix now focusing on originals makes sense. Most other major entertainment companies have their own streaming platform now, so there's really not a lot left Netflix can show besides originals. It's just sad really.

That, and it used to be where everything was split across one or two services. You didn't have five or six different services, all charging $10-20/mo, with a revolving door of content. It's like now everybody wants to have their own service to host their own content because they think it's a cash cow. When Netflix started getting bit and booking big movies and TV shows to be on the service, piracy went down too. It was an alternative that offered good value.

Just found this channel and I must admit that this is fantastic work. I shall be certain to subscribe and turn on notifications. I also have to agree with the point how there should be a fine line between series that release it all at once and series that release on a weekly basis. A main point is how much Disney+ most recent series of Kenobi could've been aided by it being a binge series of it all being released at once. To not get into any spoilers to those who haven't seen it, it got a lot of negative attention due to the fact of the delay between each episode only worsened by the fact that there was only six episodes and each episode wasn't really that long and the entire series could easily be watched in one sitting. This caused the series to overall be weakened, especially since Disney hasn't been that great at all since they bought Lucasfilm, and it could've been viewed in a better light if it all came out at once. So yeah, I have to say that you are right my guy and I can only hope you continue to keep up the quality of your content.

honest opinion, i think netflix is have a higher chance to die, and the number 1 reason is that almost every film production company have there own network and also thousands of movie and shows, like disney plus, hbo max, paramount plus and more. and if you want another great example, check the tear along the dotte line, there a clip that literally make fun of netflix and it also a netflix show, no joke, the main character said there really nothing new and relevant, for example, the sonic movie, paramount got it first, and i was like cool even mayby there were a bit late but netflix came too late, it like leonardo davinci going to nasa, and nasa just show there making something more relevant that old. you see the point, it not because the show is bad or not, it because there come late alot, it wasn't a problem before, but now there are screw, disney and hbo new cinema movies is more likely to come in there network faster, and netflix not as much. but yeah, that why netflix is falling off, and right now i actually want netflix to find a way to get better, listen feedbacks and more, because i dont want to the company fall and there shows to fall, be lost or on a another platform that just butcher it like zooming in the show and making it look bad.

Before watching the video I'd say too many services is the problem. Everybody saw what Netflix was doing and wanted to copy it but failed to realize that it's expensive to make top tier exclusive programming in abundance that people will stay loyal to. They should have just cut deals with Netflix for their content and made money from it that way. Not all the platforms have enough content to standalone. That's why so many have failed and will fail.

I find there’s not much I’m really interested in for a lot of the streaming services and so I’m not subscribed to most and I still have normal TV with a few streaming services I do watch, such as The Criterion Channel, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu are the big ones I’m subscribed to. I don’t have Netflix anymore as I’m not that fond of being subscribed to something with little I even have an interest in watching and I’ve never had a HBOMax or Disney+ subscription as they don’t offer exclusive shows or films I think I have to watch. Plus, I like physical media. It’s way better as you have the film or show and get the best quality of it as possible, plus I enjoy special features that often come with them. I also am not fond of binge watching. I can’t even begin to fathom binging through all of Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul. I watched those when they were airing new episodes every week for those seasons and it was more rewarding as it took time and you spent a long journey with those characters, where if you binge a show like those two, then the time spent with them is shorter and isn’t as fulfilling, in my opinion.

Well, looks like KZfaq is going to start blocking my comments again. I think the problem is too many different services, rates keep going up, but it seems like there is less content. Things leave all the time, you don't know when things leave. And the quality just isn't that good. I'd rather use free services and if it's something I really enjoy, I'll track down a disc.

Hey, saw you on EFAP yesterday and thought I'd check out some of your other videos. I will say that I do think that you've put a fair amount of thought into your points and did enjoy some of the exploration of this idea here, but something that stood out to me was that your script structure felt a bit unfocused. You tended to jump from point to point sometimes getting distracted by tangents and other times seeming to get tired of a tangent and cut it short before you reach the ultimate conclusion of it. There were times that I couldn't help but feel like I was going through a bad day managing my own ADHD at some points with how your script seemed to lose track of itself at times. Perhaps I'm misreading things, but between the speed, the jumps from idea to idea, the way that you'll go into a tangent that it feels like you regret having gone into, you may benefit from being able to try to find some ways to help manage your focus and direction a bit more (which I certainly couldn't really do before I got my diagnosis and learned about how to manage it myself at least). More on point for the video though, I do think this was a fun topic to explore and really appreciated your examples and the conclusions you were trying to draw from them. While the exploration at times felt like it would have benefited from going deeper, it was still fun to have the contrasting examples of how a show designed for weekly releases vs a binge watch really stands out and how the two should not be viewed as interchangable. Bringing up Invincible and how Amazon was able to help mitigate the downfalls by releasing the first three episodes in one go helped illuminate to me why in the past shows would regularly have like an hour long pilot only for the rest of the show to be only 30 minutes, as the time it takes to properly get setup and give the audience a good dose of what they can expect can often take longer than one episode. As a kind of comparison, I'm not sure if you've seen it but I've seen discussions (usually about anime) about how many episodes you should give a show or series before you know if it clicks with you or not, as afterall establishing the world, the rules, the characters, and getting the audience to invest in a series is a bit of an extra weight that only really needs to be asked for once all at the start (well new characters will need to get the audience to invest in them too, but when the audience is already invested in the world and other characters it's a much smaller ask and the audience can enjoy what is already going on while deciding if they want to invest in the new character and to what extent). Personally I tend to lean to feeling that if there's no hook by the third episode of something, then the show either isn't going to click with you or has big pacing problems (which since I've got ADHD is a *huge* detriment to my enjoyment, even if it's only on in the background) and seeing that Amazon seemed to agree at least on Invincible is fun to see. Anyways, I've probably gone on enough about my own tangent, but I do think that if you ever wanted to revisit the topic you might benefit from trying to further explore what about a show makes them more well suited for a weekly release or binge watching, and I don't just mean with setups and payoffs and how they connect, but fundementally what sort of stories, genres, whatever that benefit from sitting with someone for a week to think on and chat with people and what is better to be more actively engaged all throughout, maybe something like how important it is to get an answer to any given question may play into it? Something that also crosses my mind is that I've noticed there are shows that can benefit from the weekly structure to help 'hide' their flaws. For example, I know of a particularly well loved show that I watched as it came out where in one episode they introduced a group of archers that were able to capture the main character with relative ease. They got about two scenes in the episode they were introduced, and then the series forgot about them completely and since there was a lot else that happened that episode that would stick in your mind more, when the next episode came out in a week you'd forget about it while when binge watching you can be left asking, "Hey, why aren't you bringing your powerful archers to this important fight?" Conversely though binge-watching may be able to pull off a similar thing by overwhelming you with stuff that you remember more (even in the example I gave, the archers didn't leave a major impact on that episode as they never came back up, the main character may as well have been captured in his sleep to facilitate the main plot of that episode) in a kind of JJ Abrams style manner. It might be interesting to explore some time how both formats might be able to better hide or showcase different flaws in any given style of media. Haha, sorry for rambling myself there, just thought that I'd share my thoughts for you while leaving a comment. Looking forward to checking out more of your stuff as my focus allows!

jojos bizarre adventure is suffering terribly due to the ‘binge model’, but you could hardly call it a true binge model as Netflix just drop twelve 20 minute episodes of an anime that’s probably going to be 30-40 and said cya next year.. it’s like a shitty middle ground. Binge watchers can’t be satisfied for very long because it’s just not enough content, and the gap for new content is way too long (a year). And people who want to watch weekly feel pressured to finish the show before getting spoiled so they’re not satisfied either

100% agreed. Not only is the quality superior to the equivalent streaming, but you actually have control over what you buy. Recently, Disney edited "The French Connection" and now the only version that appears on streaming or digital is the edited one. It was done for no other reason than appeasement of woke culture. I'm glad I own this on Blu-ray (which you can't even get now unless you want to pay $150+ for a region-a locked disc that won't work in the US).

8-26-22 I have a feeling why Binge Shows are a bit harder to make is that, if there is one bad episode in an episodic Structured show, it's no big deal. Just wait till the next episode. However, if you are watch a bingable show, one bad episode can make the whole experience soured. The Binge Model is just not as stable as the Episodic Structure.

I'm 19 and I grow up watching TV and binge watch the season on DVD, I discovered streaming in 2019 and I wasn't a fan of streaming when I discovered it but I saw the appeal since you could watch everything you want and no ads. But I grow up watching TV and watching movies on DVD. I started 2021 fully becoming into streaming and I enjoyed until my streaming service ( not hulu) started adding ads and every 5 minutes ads and some last 3 minutes and are unskippable and I was paying for it, but I got pissed and returned to TV but I did fill empty because in my area all shows have moved to streaming, so TV got boring cuz there is not a lot of content. But if streaming is heading for ads even if you subscribed... I'm scared for the future of streaming

Bigger issue is the political garbage. People have a very ideological view of the world that makes it virtually impossible for them to make realistic characters. Sopranos would never get made today, it's horrifically depressing when you think about it. Good art can leverage the real world and project it into fiction. If you start from a political idea and try to project into fiction you just get a plastic world with less depth than a rpg. There's a reason foreign shows like Squid games are so much better than American made tv. They can build a world that feels real without excessive political baggage dropping into it.

Yeah it's not as much to do with the PC being a paperweight as it is these companies setting up the DRM where a web browser cannot access a high-quality stream because "muh piracy..." You used to be able to play 4K Blu-rays on an HTPC as well and these companies forced Intel into getting rid of that technology for the same reason. This is why I just buy regular Blu-rays now (or DVD when I can't get the Blu-ray). They set up 4K from the ground up to prevent piracy. If my disc gets damaged in some way (I've had it happen to an OOP Criterion title), I want the ability to copy the disc onto a BD-R so that I can continue watching it. This is not illegal, per se, so long as I retain the original copy. You cannot do this with 4K Blu-ray unless you have a Blu-ray drive that has a flashed firmware to read the discs; and a lot of Blu-ray drives will not write to a BDXL disc.

Moon knight wasn’t inherently bad but doesn’t mean it’s great.

I honestly hate people who defend the weekly release. The amount of people who go on to the internet and discuss with people each week is miniscule and not even worth it. I’d rather be able to binge the show and talk with my FAMILY or FRIENDS like they used to back in the old days. Then it gives everyone what they want. People can watch weekly and still talk about the show on the internet while people who want to binge can binge. People who think weekly only is the best are honestly the dumbest type of people.
