Actually, you basically hit the nail on the head. As a functional, usable design a walker mech is an excellent WORK platform. The increased strength, mobility and adaptability make it an amazing platform for all types of construction, recon and harsh environment research. Its no wonder that weapons systems were developed for them. And thats where the functionality breaks down. For all of the reasons you have stated. In a combat environment all of the inherent flaws of the bipedal walker idea come crashing to a head and eventually to the ground.

@@JeanLucCaptain maybe in basic concept, not in execution in the slightest. By any measure of even the slightest amount of realism, there is absolutely zero reason a humongous bipedal walker would be a better option than a space fighter. The reason for this is because adding limbs adds mass, weight and complexity. If a MS and the fighter used the same engine plant the mobile suit would have considerably lower overall performance than the fighter because of that extra mass. Greater mass in space means less acceleration. Those limbs also add cost and size, which means a carrier would be able to carry less mobile suits than the space fighters, they would be more expensive, and they would have more maintenance downtime than the fighters. Sure a mobile suit might beat the crap out of a space fighter that insists on limiting itself to flying and operating like atmospheric aircraft, IE. star wars fighters. But realistically designed space fighters, designed for actual space, ie Babylon 5 Starfuries, wont have that maneuverability disadvantage. Plus since there are no aerodynamics in space, there is not much reason for a space fighter to limit itself to fixed forward facing weapons. They can easily use turrets, with the only disadvantage being a slight mass penalty of the turret over a fixed weapon. Sure a mobile suit is space doesn't face all the disadvantages of a land based walker. Like the simple issue of recovering walkers with inevitable engine breakdowns. If a wheeled or tracked vehicles engine quits on the move, the vehicle simply stops. Then you can set the transmission to neutral, break out a towbar, and use another vehicle to tow the disables vehicle to the workshop. If a land based walkers engine quits while walking, chances are its going to be in an unstable position and fall over, damaging or destroying itself. Getting that disabled walker back to the workshop is going to be a bitch and a half. If the walker has the courtesy of breaking where you could get it onto a flatbed truck or trailer, its easier. But if that walkers engine decides to be particularity rude and break down in an area where you couldn't get a flatbed truck near it, that's a really bad day. At least with a mobile suit in space, if the power plant quits, a leg locks up, or some other rude mechanical failure immobilizes it, well towing things in space is easier.

The Squids as an "monster" are terrifying, i would rate them up there with Xenomorphs and Cenobites :S they are a perfect shock troop, the T-800 is a robot that will hunt you then shoot you in a cool collected manor, this thing will fly at you with tentacular waiving and rip your arms n legs off like a small child with a fly, if you're lucky . @@LostInTheFarmersMarket i disagree, i think having that flak weapon makes it worse, you get that sense of building hope as you blast them to bits but as there seem to be endless waves of these things, they just keep coming at you. Ammo is a false hope in this case, plus that gun can't fire forever, it will need to stop firing as the barrel heats up and the crew that man it start to tire and slow down. like old school shambling zombies, they will get you eventually and every weapon or defense you build only works against you by providing false hope.
@LostInTheFarmersMarket

@@DrewBorrowdale I do not think you understand flak then. Flak is an area effect weapon that degrades targets by shredding them en-masse. The force of having a flak shell detonate near you is as bad as the high velocity shrapnel as it creates over pressure and will damage delicate things like electronics used in the sentinel's internals. In short it's a force multiplier against airborne targets that can start killing them by the bushel at range. I am not talking the ww2 era concept of flak, I'm talking Sci-fi flak which is way more effective. Sentinels have very little armor because they rely on sheer numbers any mass multiplier weapon would be more effective than the APU's existing weapons. Really the residents of Zion should have built Riflemen (battletech) rather than glorified power loaders with a severe case of John Woo-Itis.

@@LostInTheFarmersMarket Very much aware of what flack is, also very much aware of what maintenance needs is, and what material stress is also. The problem isn't that its a bad weapon or the wrong type of weapon for the job. In a simple on off battle with a single wave of squids then sure, roll out the 2K22 Tunguska but that's not what you will be up against, you could jam yourself in the best place with a warehouse of shells behind you, have a team of engineers on standby ready to clear any jam or dud shell and be trained to a elite level, but eventually you have to stop firing, either due to personal exhaustion, mechanical failure, or simply being out of ammo. the squids will bury you in their wreckage. their numbers and total absence of self preservation will get you, the amount you take down before that is irreverent unless you're covering someone else's escape. again, its why slow moving shambling zombies will always be more terror inducing then modern runners. they will get you eventually. anything you do, any weapon you use will just prolong your hope.

I find the lack of fortifications and barricades deeply disturbing. For a "last ditch" defence it's basically undefended beyond the ability to pick off a straggler that stowed away on a zion ship. sure a mech has some mobility that may be useful sure those turrets mounted to the buildings that are half buried into walls and half hanging from the ceilings WERE taken out a bit easily but not so much as a pavise, sandbag or simple wall/trench to be found while all those stompy mech were standing there as swarm-tentacles of squiddies decided to violate anything they wanted to with near impunity once the initial breach had been added to and the mass-drivers were clearly effective so imagine what could have happened if there had been a layer or 6 of concrete embankments protecting gimbal/arm mounted guns operated from a safe (wire guided or even periscopes if the electronics are vulnerable) that can lay sown withering fire against the main sarms as mech, mercs and maniacs clean up the stragglers and maybe get a few fortified positions with tunnels between them to sally out of and hit an invader from mutiple sides.

Because while the scene I saw was bad, it was basically what you described but with the machines still pushing through the defenses incredibly quickly till only a couple mechs were left. Zion had a giant auto cannon firing at the only breach but the machines just rush through it so quickly that it wasn't enough. They then picked off APUs and the infantry behind cover until they were able to destroy the main gun and mopped up the remaining ground forces. As weird and out of place as the scene it was probably one of the best future warfare scenes in film

The defense scene with these units really wowed me when I first saw it. And I've a huge soft-spot for mecha'. But that same love of mecha' now makes it hard to justify these things. Like you mentioned, this universe has hovercraft, so omni-directional movement shouldn't be a problem. And also - mecha' excel in maneuverability on the ground. So why use them as point defense where those legs are being completely squandered? Good video.
@seanheath4492

The problem with a hover platform is that they're firing kinetic weapons (you can see the guns on those arms bouncing around during the fight), so either the pilots are constantly adjusting position or they're going to be getting scooted around the battlefield from their own recoil. Or they're going to be grounded, in which case we're back to "why bother with a mobile platform if it's just going to plant itself?"
@spyrelle3970
@spyrelle3970 2 жыл бұрын
@@seanheath4492 That's a good point. Although as far as armament is concerned, it needn't be so recoil-prone. I think the Matrix's universe has other means of fighting the machines, such as E.M-pulse launchers. They wouldn't cause significant recoil when compared to the damage they could cause to the machines. And even if that wouldn't be possible - as the scene showed, much of the recoil would be directed downward as the machine forces mainly breached Zion's ceiling i.i.r.c. I'm not saying my solution's the best - or even good, for that matter, but instead I'm trying to preserve the intended scene without changing things too much.

@@spyrelle3970 The idea that they'd be firing upwards only works while they have the sentinels in a bottleneck (which didn't last very long even when they were only dealing with one breach point). I don't recall any instances of them having a directional EMP weapon (the shipboard ones are omnidirectional and don't even spare the ships deploying them), and it doesn't seem like those lightning gun thingies would have the kind of range they need even scaled up for use on a vehicle. I think what I might have done in that situation (which doesn't even require knowledge of the Smith-possessed Bane) is hold some of the ships in reserve when they sent them out to try and EMP the machine swarm so that you'd have more guns to defend the docks. But then, I'm not a huge fan of committing to an all-out attack just because Murphy always likes to put in an appearance. The Battle of Zion is one of those things that's fun to watch, but doesn't really hold up under scrutiny.

I always thought these were like the civilian equivalent of the armored version, or maybe de-MIL'd for civ use, for construction, warehousing, etc. Basically the same, just optimized for non combat use. Called back up at the last to help fight. Shitty armor, cause a forklift don't need armor (Impairs visibility and reduces cargo load) and there was no time to put any before the fighting because they were moving heavy things till the last minute, and putting on armor takes time, and then maybe infighting about who gets it even if there is any left in a resource starved city-state that had just outfitted every major warship it had, just hours/days before in a last ditch attempt to keep squids away. Carries bigger guns than a person, . Leftover APU guns in storage, no person can carry, not good for a ship, but maybe kept just in case? Leftover mount points for rear mounted ammo cannisters, so easy to re-bolt that on, no bandolier guides, cause its a forklift turned into a fighting vehicle at the last second. The reloading system likely used to be based on another armored vehicle who sole role was to support and resupply, (similar to how M1A1 and on tanks were supposed to be resupplied in combat, or at least were planned to in idk how the real-world actually worked on that system.) the wheelbarrow reloading being a "its what we got" to replace it. Its bad, but its better than not having it? I mean if I had a choice between a forklift with guns and just my fleshy meat sack with smaller worse guns, idk, I might take it. Still awful, but better than the alternative if its already on hand?

You want to be enclosed enough so you don't get taken out by a glancing attack or shrapnel. The fact that once you're pinned down by 1000:1 numbers that you can be lasered or hydraulically cut out doesn't invalidate the need for some level of armour. Also, screw the animatrix, regardless of it being pretty good overall. All the nukes woulda glassed and fried the machine city. And radiation does in fact destroy electronics over time. And instead of one guy with just one gun, because humans find it hard to track two targets at once, why not have a second guy to run the second gun instead? Maybe a third guy. Yeah, we could put three guns on this: one facing forward, and two to the sides. And maybe we now move the pilot and their gunner to the front and the two gunners behind them. And while we're at it, we could also have the extra ammo stored in, like, a cargo area inside with two guys who are feeding ammo to the guns, which could be in the doors, and maybe instead of having those ladies run around with shoulder-fired bazookas, we could attach those bazookas to these things and I just reinvented fucking attack helicopters, didn't I?

Easy question to answer. Turrets are stationary, these mechs aren't. You can get them anywhere. Quite the shocking concept to want some form of mobile artillery that can go anywhere. The biggest design flaw is actually where the weapons are and how exposed the pilot is. Something like this looks like it was made for dock/ industrial work and had weapons placed on it as an after thought. Similar idea as farm vehicles being armoured to be made into tanks.

Replace every one of those APUs with one of my mobile AA guns and the robots would've lost the battle for the city because quad guns with auto-targeting are a bitch to get close to when you're the thing they're calibrated to intercept xDDD

The "APU" was also a utility vehicle utilized in Zion for many things in addition to being a weapons platform, hence why they had to "knuckle up" or mount their weapons prior to the engagement. Now, the bipedal design is a good point, but that is why it's what it is and not just a turret. But being mobile allows them to cover down their gun mates when they are out of ammo, or whatever the situation required.

There is a reason why walkers are so popular. If a wheeled firing platform is facing forwards then and it needs to move out the way it is a lot more involved than just sidestepping I to cover ( possible 3 point turn if not tracked or if tracked or if tracked it will need to spin on the spot and then move). A bipedal or (any unit with legs also has the ability to reduce its profile by bending the knee. Try a hover drone is a better option but most drones have to sacrifice armour and munitions to be able to attain flight in the first place.

Matrix universe in parts 2&3 makes zero sense starting with guns. Assuming humans have tech to make antigrav technology and create EM pulses and make portable arc welders (meaning they have battery tech to support high power) they should be able to either some form of rocket/bomb creating local bubble of EM or direct EM ray guns. Which would nicely work with antigrav since that would be recoilless (radiation only) weapon. So rather than slow clunky mechs with lossy ammo we would get fast hover tanks. Since radiation weapons are generally area denial seems like good idea against swarming enemy travelling by a network of tunnels.

Stick a pilot on top of a platform with minimum power for EM and antigrav, armor him up so he can get close enough and that's that. This may seem brute but Zion tactics and strategy are just idiotic. De Vauban was first to note (and this holds strong here) that as dimensionality grows the correct defence fortifications becomes gradually more resource expensive. The whole plot of Ender's Game is based on this simple fact that 3d defence (enemy coming from up/down or either side) is practically impossible. The only correct choice is offensive, especially when the attacker has greater numbers and/or resources since that is the only way to force confrontations at acceptable odds. This tactics are the mainstay of today's guerilla war everywhere. Move, concentrate firepower, hit and run using knowledge of terrain. Even then, it would take only a bare handful of resources to fix a few glaring problems: When it's time to gear them up for combat, bolt the guns to the hands (even if they're still holding the guns!), run ammo feeds along the arms and down the back and *to the legs*. Now your reloaders (again, assuming nothing else here could be changed and so they were needed too) could just load the ammo straight in with wheelbarrows at human-height and skip the scissor lifts. If we assume armor is 'worthless', then at least give 'em a mesh screen, to prevent fragments (or spent casings!) hurting the pilot, even if it can't stop a Squid. They're strapped in, so weren't escaping in a hurry anyway... To be clear, all this is to say nothing of just strapping AA guns to the back of the local forklifts. ;)

That being said, Zion probably doesn't have a depot of tanks sitting around, and these might just not have their armor anymore for whatever reason. They could have potentially jury-rigged some makeshift armor back on their of course, for some degree of any protection. I'm also not certain how well turreted things would necessarily work, considering the extent that these walkers seemed to utilize being able to shoot in more than one direction at once. Of course, you can put multiple turrets on a single small vehicle, you just run into mounting space issues with such set-ups.

But I like to interpret it as a sort of last minute thing for the humans due to the lack of resources Zion had at the time. Some of these comments interpreted the APU’s as a sort of construction mech for heavy lifting such as the Silverbacks from GOW for example which were used for heavy lifting and the Cog just added machine guns to it and called it a day. If you also recall from the Animatrix, they had fully armored APU’s and pilots as well, but later became useless because while they were heavily armored, it just basically acted as just canned food for later versions of the sentinels. Which explains a little bit on why APU’s in Revelations looks so underwhelming.

the only problems with the APU is of course as you mentioned, the term 'Armored Personnel Unit', when it does not really have any armor, and its reloading system as it endangers both the pilot and the ground crew.. the APU was designed to be able to walk through debris, and lets be honest, even before the incursion theres not really much room for wheels to roll through, and DURING the incursion, you had much less wheel room. we saw APU's walk through, jump through, and run through these obstacles with no ease, but it would have been impossible for a tank with wheels or tracks.. also you have to bear in mind that Zion focuses their metal production capacity as armor for their ships and those steel cased bullets, and not the armored personnel units; the files also mentioned on the animatrix that no matter how armored the united nation's APU was, the sentinels and the harvesters just tore through it. and yeah the mechanical nightmare maintenance thing might not as be as bad. its all hydraulics and electronics. Tanks, hover engines, or the war APUs were the real maintenance nightmares. this thing is all bare bones, its light in comparison to a wheeled armor, and the parts are easily replaceable (if you had the parts and the equipment) another thing to mention is the flying hovergunships suggestion: that would make alot of confusion in the battlefield, the docks (as compared to the living section of zion) does not have alot of flying area, and seeing as the APUs did not have radio communication, i think they would just start flying into each other, or flying into the flanking enemy... maybe a two crewed flying gunship could work last thing is the turret suggestion: that would leave no room for the ships, you'd have to make the dock bigger to allow flexibility on the guns - you dont want them shooting each other. we'd have to consider the ammo storage and feeding system for the guns, the automated targeting system, the crewing of the guns, and their electronics too.. if the gun is swarmed by sentinels its basically gone, but an APU can dodge. a fixed turret cant retreat down the corridor, but an APU can

I'd keep most of the APU the same. I'd give them kind of a wheelchair frame, two huge central wheels, then a pair of support wheels ahead&another behind so the APU can lean forward or back to have 4 wheels on the ground. The legs would be retractable for climbing as needed. Weapons would be on the back. The user would be armored, just for the sake of being worthy of the damned name!

I'm partial to the tri-wheel design used for the Landmasters from the film Damnation Alley where each wheel is a triangular assembly of three that can rotate around so when a wheel hits an obstacle that just too large to roll over as is the entire tri-wheel instead rotates to roll over it. If I'm remembering correctly the vehicle was steered using hydraulics in the midsection to bend the forward and rear sections to either the left or right, but that was a large vehicle as well and I think the emphasis was on durability and ease of repair (it was a post-nuclear setting after all) otherwise a different steering system closer to what cars and trucks used would've been employed. Don't really like the way they did the weapons for those either. For instance they could've instead tried building modular weapons rails/pods for the shoulders that could've held either gatling guns or rocket launchers or even a mix of both and if possible integrate some of those lightning guns into the arms for a close range unpleasant surprise for any squids that try for a "hug" (Spoiler - ZAP!). Not to mention there wasn't much of a targeting system, let alone a way to share sensor information between APU's (or with the people in traffic control) so they didn't waste ammo firing at the same targets. Wait, were all of those controlled manually? I mean we saw the traffic control people using that mind/machine interface to direct traffic and keep an eye out for other stuff, couldn't they have used a similar system so a pilot could control a APU with finer coordination?
@SacredCowShipyards
@SacredCowShipyards 2 жыл бұрын
Yup, entirely manual control. In fact, I think a requirement for being part of the APU Corps was that you /weren't/ a socket-head. And they "aimed" by way of tracers.
@12Mantis
@12Mantis 2 жыл бұрын
@@SacredCowShipyards Right~, cause that makes total sense, mmm, wait, no...no it doesn't. And tracers..... *all of that technology* .....and they go with tracers. I guess they really didn't understand that tech enough to even try jury-rigging a laser sight to those APU guns, then again if they did understand the tech they were using on a fundamental level then someone would've no doubt created an APU variant with a floater/flight pack for construction/scouting/sniping/etc/etc. I know if I was in that setting I would've been downloading all of the science and engineering skill packs that I could while exploiting the hell out of that socket interface for training/research/designing. But that's just me I guess, or ship crews were trained to avoid any potential redpills with transhumanists leanings.....

So something like fallout sentry bots with a more robust design for each leg wheel?
@12Mantis
@12Mantis 2 жыл бұрын
@@vonfaustien3957 While it would certainly be possible to go that route with the technology we've seen on screen (although.....I'm not sure if they have enough rubber/plastic available) that arrangement might be needlessly complex for something that needs to be durable and low maintenance for the cities small population and equally small industrial base. For the tri-wheel basic design in a city like Zion I was imagining something of a cross between a humvee and those T-1 mini-tank-like terminators seen in Terminator 3.

In universe its a pretty realistic representation of a rag tag militia that has never actually fought suddenly getting absolutely creamed by a professional regular army. Remember, the humans don't remember all the other times they fought and lost, they are repeating history they literally forgot. These eye-pleasing have a collective memory of hiding in a hole, running around the matrix like rodents, dying every single time they fight an agent, and maybe occasionally having run ins with squids on the surface where they might take a few out or even a bunch out before invariably getting picked apart. These people had zero opportunity to actually LEARN the art of war, and history is filled with theoretically smart people getting steamrolled on their first combat outing.

The original military-approved, fully-enclosed APUs before the fall of mankind failed to defeat the machines. I don't think naked APUs will do much better. The APUs truly are turrets with feet since they have separate controls for combat and walking. They have to hunker down while firing the guns and limited to turning around on that one spot. Honestly, lining the whole shipyard with automated AAA guns like the sides of WW2 aircraft carriers could be more effective. They hoverships have an EMP device as a last ditch weapon but their base has no last ditch defenses. Artillery shells or RPGs with low yield EMP warheads could cripple more squids than a platoon of APUs. They could've fired one at where the cracks appear and crippled the giant drills before they got through.

Yeah, there's about seventeen different weapons/weapon platforms that the humies could have used that would have worked A LOT better than the nonsense they tried to use, but oh no, we HAD to go with walkers. Because walkers. Blessed primates.

I always figured that these things were last ditch poorly maintained technicals that are held together with whatever spare parts and hope they could strap to these battle forklifts. I feel like what little industrial capability zion had was devoted entirely towards their hovercraft, and these things were made with what was left laying around spare. That being said there are modern techincals that are better quality then the apu

It sounds more like they just couldn’t be bothered, and didn’t have the resources to quip the mechas Also sounds like the military command of this place was struggling to keep up with anything Also sounds like that rack loader was never intended to be used during combat, but even the guys that run the carts didn’t know that it wasn’t intended to function this way

I always thinking that these design of apu, was "justified" by the despair and lack of resources, at the time of the final battle. But, thinking again, not only humans have hovercraft (a technology that seems far superior to exoskeleton), but the sistem of reloading is a flaw...i men...the rate of fire against the squid will consume all the ammunitions in a minute, maybe two. Sorry for my english.

The Squids could have saved themselves a lot of effort with just mounted _semi automatic rifles_ and taken out each APU as soon as they broke through. There were enough squids that even _single shot rifles held in their claws_ could have devastated the Humies in salvo fire. While the creation of Human creations, technically they don't count as *Human vehicles* … pity, they deserve their own deconstructive critical dissection, for something designed to kill Humans they are not well thought out - Skynet could give them some pointers. As for the APU's … who knows, in *Matrix 5*; The Humans might have armoured gunships flying around inside Zion supported by armoured cars that are basically portable turrets. _Or their soldiers carry tripod mounted .75 calibre bolter guns… …_ What if they scaled up their lighting guns to vehicle sized and it could chain through a swarm? Or the machines break in and discover Humans now have directional EMP's.

The problem with the Matrix is that the best solution for the machines was just to make the matrix itself 2 layers, so when people rebel from the "perfect" society, they end up living in the simulated dystopian "real world." It would actually make the most sense if Zion and everyone in it (and thus everything in the movies) was also in a simulation the whole time. Humans get to think they're rebelling, but they never damage anything or put the machines at risk.

There was a design proposed by the studio that had the person more-or-less encased with armor. But it was removed to make characters more recognizable to the auidence i.e."Easier to see". The weapons weren't on the back. That part you see where they 'slide' the guns along their hips 'loading' the ammuntion. Like chambering the first round on the belt. I agree their designs ... need improvement. A lot of the lack of armor and weapons etc. was attributed to "well, everything was scavenged. So much of it was made from parts they could just find". Which causes more problems than it solves.

I see these things. And ponder how a squad of jeeps with Quad Gatling cannons would have more weapons, and be better protected. Leaving these poor construction units to actually build things without needing to ever meet the front line. They are fighting from flat battlefields pre-prepared. Stick those guns on trucks. Drive in circles. Already 10 times more potent and difficult to overcome. Armour the pilot and gunner position. Now far more potent. And the whole turret solution will allow easier reloading to boot! And we can even leave the APU machines to build and fortify the city, or fight in the living quarters with trucks holding the major passageways with maximum firepower, and safer reloading. We could strap more guns on each truck to boot, but then we hit the issue of disabling one machine removes a lot of potential firepower... Although some issued with extra barrels help us hold hallways safely when we cannot cram three or four machines in next to each other. Quadcannon ready to fight, just point me where the target is!

The thing about having mechs/bibedal walkers is tha they have the potential to trump tracked or wheeled vehicles in mobility. What you said about this APU thing is 120% correct tho.
@justinbilodeau5215

my ideal for a better mechs, make it armored, add hoverjet or Rocket truster (in the leg, foot or in a back) to add mobility and a high jump, ejection cockpit to increase the survivability, add melee weapons incase the mech goes into close quarter combat, hardpoints to add more weapons, more batteries, radars, reactive armor or sub arms, emp device, depending on its shape the four legged would be on front line because their claw or the magnet hand to grap on thing, depending on the loadout the two legged would act as a sniper or support unit.
