Get your tissues ready for Jo Ellen Pellman's powerful performance of 'Unruly Heart' from the Netflix Film, THE PROM, available NOW!
The Prom follows Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winnerJames Corden) are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma's predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.
Directed by Ryan Murphy, The Prom is the spectacular, big-hearted film adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical. Screenplay by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin. Listen to The Prom Official Soundtrack: theprommovie.lnk.to/ost

I sat down in a really cynical way to watch The Prom. I didn't expect it to be anything other than this corny, slightly glitzy musical, but as a pansexual man who has struggled with his sexuality throughout my life, it really spoke to me. It's a triumph of the human spirit; it trusts us to believe in goodness and hope and love. That has to be worth celebrating. This song deserves to become a Greatest Showman-esque anthem.

If you watch some of the interviews from the actors in the original musical, they were approached every night by people at the stage door telling them how much it meant to them, about how it changed their lives. There were many coming out occasions at that show. I strongly suspect the entire cast and crew of the movie understood how much their show meant to so many people.

Some hearts can conform Fitting the norm Flaunting their love for all to see I tried to change Thinking how easy life could be I just kept on failing I guess that was a sign That there wasn't much hope For this unruly heart of mine Then, you came along And right or wrong Feelings began to overflow We had to hide Thinking that no one else could know And not having you near me Was where I drew the line So, I had to conceal This poor, unruly heart of mine And though I don't know how or when But somehow, I learned to see No matter what the world might say This heart is the best part of me! So, fears, all in the past Fading so fast I won't stay hidden anymore I'm who I am And I think that's worth fighting for And nobody out there ever gets to define The life I'm meant to lead With this unruly heart of mine Hi, Emma Loved your video Where do I start? Nothing made sense until him But we're always hiding You're not the only one And though I don't know how or when But somehow, I learned to see No matter what the world might say This heart is the best part of me So, fears, all in the past Fading so fast I won't stay hidden anymore I'm who I am And I think that's worth fighting for And nobody out there ever gets to define The life I'm meant to lead With this unruly heart of mine Mine And nobody out there ever gets to define The life I'm meant to lead With this unruly heart of mine

The lyric where it says “this heart is the best part of me” hit home, I think I needed to hear that self affirmation, because it’s the part of ourselves we are usually told to hide or at the very least the reason we have to hide in the first place, but claiming it out loud like that just feels SO good for the soul.

I'm a bi woman in a straight marriage. Pretty much erased for all practical purposes, in other words. But two of my three kids are enby (one pansexual, one ace), and suddenly I'm in tears over moments like this for totally different reasons from my own. I've tried to raise them with as much support as I can, knowing that they won't get much from the world so they'd better find it at home. But it's so beautiful to see kids opening up and embracing who they are, even if it's just for a few moments in a movie. Watching it feels like everything's going to be all right for us all, even if you know that it doesn't actually make that true.

My dad asked if this was how I was coming out and I simply told him and my mom I liked girls- pretty smooth and they actually accepted me- helped that I had shown my dad this movie so he knew what this song meant. And now it means a lot more to me!

Lyrics Some hearts can conform Fitting the norm Flaunting their love for all to see I tried to change Thinking how easy life could be I just kept on failing I guess that was a sign That there wasn't much hope For this unruly heart of mine Then, you came along And right or wrong Feelings began to overflow We had to hide Thinking that no one else could know And not having you near me Was where I drew the line So, I had to conceal This poor, unruly heart of mine Hi, Emma Loved your video Where do I start? Nothing made sense until him But we're always hiding You're not the only one And though I don't know how or when But somehow, I learned to see No matter what the world might say This heart is the best part of me So, fears, all in the past Fading so fast I won't stay hidden anymore I'm who I am And I think that's worth fighting for And nobody out there ever gets to define The life I'm meant to lead With this unruly heart of mine Mine And nobody out there ever gets to define The life I'm meant to lead With this unruly heart of mine

This has to be one of my favorite songs. And the emotion in everybodys voices just makes it that much more powerful. That one girl crying while singing gets me every single time as well as the high note at the end. I just cant get enough. And as a trans teen, seeing that trans lesbian fills my heart up so much.

one of the best songs in the entire movie, right behind lobe thy neighbor. This musical is particularly close to me, because I go to a high school in a relatively divided area politically, and our school chose to do this one. Our superintendent decide to try to shit it down, but we kept on fighting and eventually got recognized nationally as the second school that this happened to (it happened a year before to a school in New Jersey) and eventually the superintendent gave in. That’s what this musical symbolizes to me, the push for you to be you and to not let anyone else change that. i love this musical, and naturally as a band kid i signed up for pit orchestra as i loved all the songs and thought how we fought so hard for our school to put on this musical that i have to try to contribute some way, since i can’t sing. unfortunately a senior got picked above me for the part (there was only one part in the section and our director prioritizes upperclassmen) so i thought about doing crew, because i knew i needed to be a part of this performance we worked so hard to put on. i just love musicals man, they are all so powerful and express so much. and the music too,especially in the prom and the high note in this song at 2:26 is just chefs kiss. truly top 5 music moments of all time. this song is just so inspiring and i hope more people can see this and be positively changed like i, and many others, were.

I grew up in Kentucky and my then boyfriend lived across the river in Indiana. The faculty went to war with the board of directors to let me bring my boyfriend to prom in 2004. My parents went to war with the media because they wanted us to be safe. Appealing to the human impulse to be kind always wins over. We were the first same sex couple to attend a prom in that region. It was terrifying. I’ve only watched this movie twice - and both times I’ve stayed up all night crying. ❤

I was introduced to this musical about a year before the movie and loved it. During quarantine, I realized I was bisexual. I watched this movie at midnight and ugly cried throughout most of it. During this song, I was singing through my tears. When I finished the movie I went upstairs to my room and my sister came in asking if I was alright because she heard me ugly cry the entire time. Even watching/listening to this song makes me teary-eyed at least. It is so beautiful and so helpful to me!

I so love this part of the film. I was a closeted teenager who also suffered from internalized homophobia for years growing up in a catholic conservative household, I found comfort in KZfaq coming out videos. Teens and even adults sharing their stories and internal struggles brought a sense of camaraderie to me and that it's okay to be gay. It's not wrong. What's wrong is the people's malicious attitude toward us. I've drawn so much strength out of Ingrid Nilsen's coming out video. I may have not come out completely to my family but I was able to come out to myself.
@millerOnTheRun

For those who is unfamiliar with Ingrid Nilsen, she was one of the first beauty KZfaq creator in the early 2010's. Seeing a non textbook masculine lesbian was knew to me (from where I'm from anyways) and being gay doesn't have to change the way I carry or dress myself. It's okay to be a girl and like girls.
