Prophets are 'called by God' to receive and convey His message. Isaiah, the first of the four so-called 'major' prophets along with Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel, is often present in Old Testament iconographic depictions. His presence is mainly due to one of his prophecies: "Behold, the young woman shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel" (Isaiah 7:14). In depictions of the Annunciation, the book that the Virgin is reading, according to St Bernard, contains the famous prophecy of Isaiah.
