How would you describe Henry VIII? Insecure, tyrannical, generous, egotistical, cultured, sporting. These are some of the descriptions of the King's psyche that Tudor historians discuss.

Except for Charles Brandon and that's because Charles new Henry better than anyone. They grew up together and even Charles pissed him off when Henry was younger and Henry forgave him after he cooled off. Charles Brandon was King Henry's confidante and best friend and somehow Charles was able to adapt to Henry's Magnus after he suffered several injuries and went through a divorce. Charles did not agree with everything that Henry wanted but he did as he was ordered regardless of his conscience because he was loyal to his king without wanting anything in return. other people on Henry's Council wanted favors or promotions from the King and they would lie and spread rumors Charles Brandon didn't say anything unless he thought that it was something that was going to humiliate the king or hurt him. King Henry would not have killed Sir Thomas More had Sir Thomas lied and said he would take the oath of the Church of England even if he was Catholic in his heart. King Henry was basically Catholic it's just that he's separated from the Catholic church because they were so corrupt!! The Cardinals had Mistresses and children upon millions in wealth, but they wouldn't Grant him an annulment because he honestly believed he had committed wrong against God according to the verses in Leviticus because he married his brother's wife. Henry salgadas the overall Authority and not the Pope.

Makes one wonder, what these historians would make of the theory that, in addition to the injured leg, Henry got a brain damage that influenced his behaviour in its turn.

If you wish to call it "an achievement", Henry VIII became the only English King that the majority of people around the world can actually say they can name. Which puts him in the same category as all the other murderous tyrants in history.

I have also considered Henry's relationship with his son FitzRoy to be a Catalyst in his almost panicked behavior towards producing a male heir.He seemed to be grooming him to be the spare in the event that he produced no legitimate male offspring.Making him the second most powerful man in England and nurturing a much closer relationship with him than any of the other children.Before his death henry was attempting to position him to be heir apparent.
@annwilliams64384 жыл бұрын
Lornicopia oFitzroy died years before Henry did....
@carlv13794 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I wonder why Fitz wasn't just placed into the succession while Henry kept trying for another?
@ShallowApple222 жыл бұрын
most definitely people look at Anne as the turning point but honestly the issues began when Fitzroy was born it reinforced that the issue was not him and if it wasn't him then his marriage was not seen as valid. even the way Bessie was pratically exiled I see as tactic and another insight into Henry's attitude towards getting rid of those no longer useful to him by taking her out of the picture the child was his and his alone almost believing he could faine and fake Fitzroy legitimacy as HIS child who may 1 day be king

That Thomas Cromwell was a historically important figure is beyond doubt; that he should serve as the sympathetic hero of a novel is more surprising. There was nothing remotely glamorous or romantic in his person. Even the painter Hans Holbein could not pretend that he was handsome. In Holbein’s great portraits Thomas More fairly glows with a deep thoughtfulness; Erasmus focuses his quicksilver wit and ironic intelligence on the quill pen poised above the sheet of paper; but jowly Cromwell, his mouth set in a hard scowl, clutches a piece of paper like a dagger and looks out at the world through wary, piggish eyes.

@hop1pop I think it was more likely that she didn't want: A) a man taking over her reign, and B) risking her life with childbirth. She lost two stepmothers that way. She lost another stepmother to the ax. She watched her sister degrade herself with unrequited adoration for a husband who despised her. She saw Mary Stuart lose her throne because she married the wrong man for "love".

They (The Plantagenets) definitely did. But Henry VIII wasn't the only one that did what he could to keep himself in power. The Tudors had a weaker claim to the throne and Henry VII did his part in taking them out and Yorkists to keep his throne. But in Henry VIII's case it was also out of revenge from the scathing paper Cardinal Reginald Pole wrote about his religious policies (and because Henry VIII couldn't touch him due to his exile). He even tried (and failed) with having Pole assassinated.

Brought up an intelligent, well educated but highly spoilt brat who was doted on by the women of the family. Surrounded by the knowledge that his father was basically a royal nobody by blood but top dog by violent battle and at some stage of his young life in terror of a rebelling hoard. Raised as a second son and intended for the church, but put on a throne before 20 as a strong, fit, good looking youngster that everyone around him thought was a new Demi-God. Desperate for a son as his father had had to fight for his crown and no woman had successfully been queen regent before... Wife keeps popping out kids that die and no wonder he starts questioning what is going on. Then he crashes off his horse and bumps his head badly. Now there is an already uptight, paranoid, aging, son less king with brain damage who now has no impulse control. So no surprises what happened. It probably would have better for all around him if he had died the day of his brain injury.

@squeakybauer I quite agree. The requirement to comment is a knowledge of. Indeed, beyond Philippa Gregory, there are lay people who study history and have a deep understanding and appreciation of historical figures. This notion of "experts" obscures and gives short shrift to the knowledge of others, unfortunately.

And in Proverbs it speaks about Jesus Christ(when he was still in Heaven and known as Michael) how he created (through the power of his Father YHWH or in English; Jehovah) and mentions the fountains in the deep part of the ocean which science only discovered late last century. Prophesies from the Christian Greek scriptures about the time of the end are also coming true.
