*UPDATE* : As of the September 3rd 2021 preview article for the 9th edition Black Templars codex, it has been outright stated now that the reason as to why the chapter has no librarians is due to them continuing to follow the Edict of Nikaea

My favorite thing to do in Dawn of War 2 is playing as Black Templars and deploying a librarian. 😎

I thought the black Templars hated navigators and astropaths but still use them because well, essential for communication and navigation.

Warsmith Time: While I do not particularly care for what becomes of Dorn's bastard children (preferring they be left to bawl and shriek) I will point out that the Templars adhere stringently to the beliefs of their founding "fathers" I use the term as a plural because as we know the relationship between Sigismund and Rogal Dorn was heavily strained due to the former believing the Emperor to be a God. The prophecy given to the Templar by Euphrati Keeler that Sigismund would be needed by Dorn at his most crucial hour could also explain certain aspects of how and why the Black Templars avoid the use of the Librarians. Apart from the basic concept of Suffer not the witch to live, we must remember that Rogal Dorn all but rejected his gene-son upon learning that he viewed the Emperor as divine. As it has been stated that a Primarch is a father to his Legion, we can then extrapolate a plausible theoretical that Sigismund desired to win back the trust of his Lord. Thus when the Black Templars came into existence he attempted to modify them in a manner which he believed would allow Rogal Dorn to view them as the truest expression of what the 7th Legion was meant to be. This means that the Templars follow the edict of Nikaea because it was a command issued by the Master of Mankind and enforced by their Primarch. The other aspect related directly to their chapter strength, as Rogal flat out rejected the Codex Astartes at first, Sigismund would likely have believed that by keeping his warriors at splinter legion strength that he was keeping faith with both his Gene-Father and the Emperor. Given the introduction of Primaris Librarians, it was never stated why the Black Templar do not have them. Unless a book, short-story or passage in a codex comes out the idea of the flaw in their gene-seed make more sense to me.

Something I think gets overlooked in theories like this are simple possibilities. I was unaware of the events of the Catalaxian crusade, and simply thought the culture of the Black Templars discouraged Librarians. Not in a "Don't you dare" way, but rather by not giving the option. Librarians are typically apart from their Chapter brothers, and the Black Templars have a very close brotherhood. I could believe it if it was a case of Psyker aspirant Marines simply deciding not to use their abilities so as to stay with their brothers.

This is an absolute Retcon but one I think is justified, Being not only the largest space marine chapter but also entirely fleet based the idea of them lasting for more then a week without astropaths and navigators is beyond laughable.

Oddly Librarian Black Templar are playable in Deathwatch. While likely an oversight/error, this could mean that they send off all their Librarians to the Deathwatch, in some backwards way to follow the Edict of Nikea.

I see a lot of comedy in the replies, but in seriousness, it's been stated in the BT codex (4th ED I believe), and subsequent other sources, that the BT scan EVERY aspirant to the chapter down to the cellular level to ensure that they are of pure humanity and free of the taint of mutation. I'll wager that a lot of potential psykers are weeded out of the selection process simply because the trait is considered a mutation or other flaw.

There's also the fact that Rogal Dorn is the primarch equivalent of a blank/pariah, since his willpower was so strong that the Warp pretty much disappeared around him (Or something like that, point is the Warp didn't work as it should be)

Secretly, Black Templar chaplains are also psychers, which is why they are able to inspire more than other chaplains... and how Grimaldus was able to survive(he threw up a psychic bubble-unconsciously)

You’d think they’d allow biomancy at least. Those psykers are healers and damar dealers as well a buffers for their squads. So it would give many apothecaries stress off their shoulders and would earn a bit of favor with their brothers in terms of keeping them alive. You’d also think that a melee heavy chapter would welcome psychic powers that enhance their martial prowess. They allow astropaths and navigators so why not at least ONE aspect of the librarian schools?

Considering the Edict of Nikea ONLY concerns librarians, and the Black Templars not only employ navigators and astropaths, but also Gray Knight psykers (so Astartes using psychic power, but which are technically not librarians, and their use of psychic force was ordained by the Emperor), it stands to reason they are following the Edict to the letter. As one would expect of them.

The Fists do not have the ability to go into suspended animation? Is this something which has become since the War of the Beast? It featured 3 Imperial Fists (Slaughter, Zarathustra and Killshot) do it, the last survivors of the Chapter, upon the World of Ardamantua. In the books I am Slaughter and Predator, Prey.

I would say its the "Edict of Nikea", given with Primaris Marines according to the Dark Imperium series, the defective organs are now functioning, so the newer Sons of Dorn can spit acid and hibernate.....so only 1st borns are still afflicted. And given the attrition of war, and the current time frame, it is likely there are more primaris than 1st borns now.

A question: Does lobotomization negate the ability for psyker traits? I just think the notion of a cenobite servitor with subconscious psychic abilities would be a good reason to not even recruit them in the chapter.

The *real* reason why they don't use Librarains, is not to kick any more dirt on their father-chapter. When they look at their own current win rate in Nephilim vs that of the Imperial Fists, they'd rather give up their psychic phase up entirely take it more easy in the shooting phase anywhere above 24"...

Even though each Battle Company has 105 members minimum, making the total 1050... not including the Armoriam, The Reclusiam, the Librarius, the Fleet elements, the Armored Units, anyone seconded to the Deathwatch... and everything else that makes the number even higher. Realistically, even the most strict Codex Astartes adherents, like the Red Scorpions, probably have closer to 2000 members.
