On 12th July 1958, The Quarrymen recorded In Spite Of All The Danger and That'll Be The Day at Percy Phillips Studio in Liverpool.
In the latest episode of The Quarrymen story, David Bedford discusses that historic day when they recorded the first original song, In Spite Of All The Danger, written by Paul McCartney and credited to McCartney/ Harrison.
Colin Hanton from the Quarrymen then tells the story of how they came to make the record, and then there is a performance of "In Spite Of All The Danger" by The Quarrymen at Strawberry Field.

I learnt the song on guitar at 11 back in 2019. And because I was so young when I learnt the guitar solo which happened to be the first guitar solo I learnt on guitar, its what made me find out that the rest of my life will be surrounded by music.

Interesting that George got writer-credit before John. Also, that this was just about one year since Paul and John first met. Thanks for another great bit of Beatles (Quarry Men) History.

Brilliant Dave, the performance brought a huge smile to my face, and the story is about maybe one of the major landmarks in the Beatles journey to fame. Great video as always.

This is a very insightful bit of information. Mixed in with the "live" version, this shows how good the Quarrymen where without fully understanding it then. David's shots in Strawberry Field is fun and makes the history more accessible and "real" Thanks again, David.

Maybe I’m showing my Beatle bias, but I think In Spite of all the Danger is a really good song and it was done quite well by the a bunch of young kids back in 1958. Paul was obviously born with the ability to write and put out a good song. John was a naturally born singer as well.

I agree! I love this song and think it is incredible for such young lads to create a song of this quality. Glad you're a fan of the song, too.

Amazing to think there was only one place in a huge city like Liverpool where a band could cut an instantaneous disc. Virtually every town in the USA in 1957 had at least one makeshift recording studio where you could make such a disc, and every large city had at least one pro recording studio. London's monopoly on recording had a seriously detrimental effect on the development of music in England. No equivalent to Sun, Chess, etc., in the rest of the country for groups such as the Beatles to try their luck. Only a few major labels.

We were so far behind the US with this. You had to go to London to get a deal too! Ridiculous.

@@BrightmoonLiverpool I suspect there was a reason Liverpool was "behind" -- EMI, Decca, et al. did not want any competition, and made it basically illegal to open a studio. A few home studios that made amateur discs were all that they would allow.

The Georgie song. Yes Paul figures too but by the Comments i make mine. George was in his way to do it no matter what. He had by the time a "intent" of make a band with his brother called The Rebels i think we all know that ☺️. Maybe his composer skills weren't that good but the men got all the desiree to do it. Let me tell you My men cause is My Beatle My Mockingbird ♥️ want it (be an artist) so Bad. And thanks God his Mom understand that she has a diamond in George, and she support him. Well she want that Dream too and she lived through George but that's another story. How do i love this channel and know English to understand everything, greetings from 🇻🇪✌️

George's contribution was in his guitar intro and solo, but this was a Paul song. But the Quarrymen and the Beatles would not have had the success they had without George. He, too, was a genius and deserves his credit. Greetings from Liverpool.

Were there any other McCartney- Harrison songs after this ONE? A quick Google led me to some histories which, I assume, incorrectly describe this studio as being IN LIVERPOOL-But WAIT- At 4:47 the other guy says it WAS Liverpool so now i'm totally confused. 4:00 How much did they pay in American money then and now?

They paid 3/4 of a pound. From 1949 to 1967 a pound sterling was worth $2.80c. So about $2.10c. £1 pound in 1958 is equivalent to £29.89 pounds today. so they paid equivalent of £22.41. I think that was _very_ cheap. The recording stdio was in a road named _Kensington_ in Liverpool.

This studio was in Kensington, Liverpool. It is the only song I know of, which was McCartney/ Harrison. It was a Paul song - George wrote the musical intro and solo. I don't know the exchange rate back then. It was 75 pence to make it, which is equivalent to 93 cents today.

That's a mighty clean looking acetate he's holdng, considering its age. The dead wax is reflecting the daylight. I'm wondering if thats one of the McCartney re presses John's holding? Was there 100 pressed after Paul purhased the disc? Great Stuff. Quin
