What happens when you take an amazing knife, and fix all of its problems? You very predictably get an amazing knife, the QuietCarry Drift 2.

I EDC the Drift v2 and Nick's review is spot on. It's small and light and easy to pocket. It's not exactly hard use like a PM2 or PM3 although Vanax is plenty tough. It's brilliant for 90% of everything I use a knife for. If I have one criticism it is that the marine-grade rustproof screws are just a bit shallow, soft, and not the tightest Torx 8 fit. So if you like to disassemble be very gentle and make sure the driver is seated... It's definitely a gem.

Vanax is a very interesting blade steel. Super-stainless, can hit HRc=61 in the right hands (heat treating), which is kind of the sweet spot for a balance of resistance to edge rolling and abrasion while not being brittle. So these Quiet Carry knives are very good for being tolerant of e.g. sweating, and common things like food or fruit juices, or blood, and even if you end up leaving them dirty, they do fine. Titanium + Vanax is a nice combo leveraging both materials (I own a Waypoint already). And now with a thumbstud opener, well, I had to order a Drift with knurled handle. Nice review... welcome anything Nick chooses to publish!

I’ve had the Drift 2.0 for a couple months now and it is truly amazing. I’m also loving that this knife will probably be handed down to generations of grandchildren long after my CRK and Hinderer knives are rusted junk. What I don’t hear many people talk about though are the other properties of Vanex that make it so good. Rustproof is great but it also has edge retention similar to M390 and high toughness as well which will minimize chipping and breaking the tip (common issues). I haven’t sharpened it yet but hear that it’s not too bad compared to other steels with high hardness. I’m not sure why it doesn’t get more attention when it excels in every category and is probably the most versatile knife steel available.
@bn6728
@bn6728 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. Vanax is among the best stainless options out there; it's toughness is much higher than M390/20CV/204P. For me toughness is the Achilles heel of most higher end stainless steels. My guess on its lack of use in knives is probably tied to the lack of availability of blanks in many configurations. All of the knives I've seen made from it are of very thin blade thickness, like on the QC knives. I'm dying for someone to make a fixed blade vanax knife with a thick stock for outdoor use, and I'm sure that someone would have done it by now if they could.
@ranger5281
@ranger5281 Жыл бұрын
Vanax is special. Wish it were more available... kudos to Way Point. Magnacut is an even nicer balance of edge retention, nearly as stainless, and tougher. It's going to make inroads on S30V, S35VN, and 204P/20CV/M390.

Had the Waypoint, but sold it (it felt a bit slippery on my hand), that was before they came up with the G10 version. Now if the Waypoint would get the knurling too I would consider it again. The Drift somehow does not call my name when it comes to blade shape and the choil that seems unnecessarily large for sharpening, but a bit too small for the finger (plus the stock being so thin won’t offer much support). Still, a very cool knife. I am curious what QC has up their sleeves for 2022.
@CloudyShinobi

You seriously NEED to review the Drift LC (large contoured) That sends all the prior drifts drifting or more accurately hydroplaning off the highway. No hype, it’s that good! One of the only knives I couldn’t tell a meaningful difference between the stock bearings and the skiffs I threw on. Still kept them on tho bc it can’t hurt

In terms of quiet carry’s ascension to knife world dominance, where it rocketed to the highest echelon of oems quality, functionality, and aesthetics, there are two relevant time periods. Those would be BBB and ABB which stand for Before Ball Bearings and After Ball Bearings, respectively. Ever since the 9, the first ball bearing knife they dropped AFAIK, they’ve been going from strength to strength. I find myself eagerly awaiting their next bearing knife and they’ve earned the “take my money” status. Quiet carry and Divo knives have both blown me away with how far ahead of the competition they are, keep it up both of my fav brands of 2023 Sorry for the gush fest 😅

Hyper critical, you didn't mention an aspect which can be important to some in the knife community and that is closing action.....'drop shutittide'......the light blade and the PB washers lends itself to having a closing action that requires a bit of encouragement (very minor, but a thing)......this may have been improved if they adopted a pivot bush (which would also improve tunability) and it would not have hurt to have added a detent ball ramp either. Cheers
