Femke's 400 flat PR (49.17) was on an indoor track. she hasn't yet shown what she can do outdoors - I expect her to shave about a second off that time (long track is considerably easier to run than short track). It will most definitely be close. I would pick Femke to win the flat and Sydney to win the hurdles.

Gold medals in the open and the hurdles? It'd be foolish to attempt that, she'd be tired. Unless the events have a big gap between them like the 100 and 200. Even then it'd be too risky for an event that only happens every 4 years

@@user-ze3sg6ix1u Well not necessarily. I looked up the schedule for US trails and the Olympics. She could EASILY do both at the US trails, the open 400 round 1 takes place 2 or 3 days AFTER the 400 hurdle finals. As for the Olympics, it would be "hard" but not too crazy. She would run 6 days straight but only 1 race a day. The only bad thing about that is the events alternate each day. So for ex: Aug 4th is Round 1 of the 400 hurdles, and Aug 5th is round 1 of the open 400.

From a marketing standpoint I say she stay with the 400mH and win another Olympic gold medal in that; your world record can be broken, but your Olympic title is forever. After the 2024 Olympics she can concentrate on the open 400m for the rest of the season, maybe mix up some 400mH with open 400m (and a few 200m?) in early 2025 to see what she can do in the 400m. Stay with the 400mh in the 2025 World Champs then use 2026 to concentrate on the 400m and see how far she can drop her PR., maybe switch to the open 400M for the 2027 WC and 2028 Olympics.

I can concur. I ran professionally back in the day (U.S. Nationals 1996 for the Atlanta games semi finals 100m got dusted haha). I still compete as a 52 year old man, and still have connections in the “pro” world. My friend, who lives out in Cali, told me Sydney is doing a lot of 500 work, consistently hitting 36-37 seconds for 300, 12 for the next 100, and 12 for the last 100. They are training for this record for sure. From the sounds of those intervals, Bobby is setting the stage for rounds. He wants her at that for the rounds so it won’t stress her out and it’s easy, then race time hit mid 33 for the 300 and 11.3-11.5 for the last. That’s what it sounds like to me

It’s really interesting (and entertaining lol) to read everyone’s comments about Sydney vs Femke (Bol)!!! No doubt about it, Sydney was phenomenal in 2020-2023 before she was injured! Although she has announced that she’ll be competing in the 400h, that’s no guarantee that she will run the 400h in Paris…she’s leaving her options open. It’s nearly certain that she WON’T run in both the 400m & the 400h since it would tire her out considerably and reduce her chances of a gold medal in either. I like one person’s comment that Sydney might try to get a gold medal in the 400m in order to distinguish her as the only athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in both events even if it’s in different Olympic games. Regarding those that have stated that Sydney is basically a sure thing to take gold in Paris for the 400h…you better think twice! I’d give Femke Bol 50-50 odds of beating Sydney for the following reasons: 1. Femke is a few months younger that Sydney and hasn’t reached her peak yet. 2. She started running the 400h at an older age than Sydney and is still improving her technique (just recently running 14 steps per hurdle instead of 15) 3. Femke has also been improving her speed & stamina (she set and twice broke her own indoor record in the 400m 49.16) 4. Femke is lazer-focused on only running while Sydney has been distracted writing & promoting her new book, designing and promoting her line of New Balance running attire, and making speaking engagements & talk show appearances. 5. Femke has been consistently injury free while Sydney missed most of the 2023 outdoor season and is understandably rusty. Both women are incredible athletes, as well as human beings, and it will be awesome to see them compete in Paris!

Sydney is just naturally extremely gifted 😭 it’s crazy. I feel like Bol has to work much harder to reach Sydney’s 85% effort. I actually enjoy the fact that track is not the totality of her life. Just a platform for her to achieve her bigger mission 🤩 hoping they both stay healthy & keep enjoying the sport as long as they desire 🏃‍♀️

one thing about Bol is that she never ran a 400 meter flat (outdoor) while not being in intense training meanwhile, the PB you show in this video is het indoor PB and WR. normally everyone runs significantly faster outdoor, but since Bol never ran it while well rested i believe its safe to say her outdoor PB would also be under 49 if she ever did run it well rested. i say this because her indoor PB is already 0.17 sec away from a 48 seconds 400m flat. so my conclusion is that its not really an edge like you say for mclaughlin over bol, cuz if you reason like that you could also make a list of indoor 400 meters and their outdoor 400 meter hurdles list, in that case bol would have a huge edge on the competition. unless im wrong in saying an indoor PB of 49,17 would for sure mean a sub 49 outdoor.

You're right that Bol hasn't run a properly trained and tapered open 400 outdoors, and she'd probably go sub-49 if she did. But I watched all of Syd's 400s last season (not hard, I think she only ran three events) and outside of her weird experiment with bad pacing against Paulino, she wasn't pressed at all. Safe to say she has way more in the tank.

In Europe, Femke Bol is considered the person to beat. Consider, however, Syd has been dominant for going on five years in the open and hurdles. Phenomenal. She obviously is not getting back in unless she thinks she can win. Would be epic to see McLaughlin, Bol, and Muhammad on the track in the final.
@ofs82
@ofs82 21 күн бұрын
The problem is, you have to enter a race for people to be able to beat them. McLaughlin's long absence has meant that Bol has been de facto the woman to beat, simply because she's clearly the best athlete that's been competing. I really don't understand so many people hyping Muhammad though - she was the best a few years ago, but she has been noticeably on the wind-down since Tokyo and didn't make the final in Budapest. Shamier Little has been comfortably the second best US women's 400mh runner the last two seasons.

@@joowsty agreed. And I'm about to say something I was crucified for last year. The 400 hurdles is still an event that's being assessed in terms of technique. It's very technical in the sense that if a new race model is developed, it's easy for athletes to remove Chunks from their times. Hence why I don't think it's fat fetched for Femke to get close to or challenge that world record. Like you said.... She's learning a new race dynamic. Sydney's world record is the true world record because Athletes from the past didn't have the flat speed or their technique was a little off. I think it's more towards the speed issue. I mean if 2019 Miller Uibo had Sydney's hurdling skills the WR would be 50.1
