So after Moses Ingram, John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, and many other actors and fans, I think it's time we talk about the racism problem within Star Wars. Both inside the Star Wars fandom and within Lucasfilm itself. Let's talk about Reva, Finn, and, Rose and other characters.

I honestly think the diversifying of gender and race is sabotaged in so many of these shows/films. Every female is written as a cardboard Mary Sue or agro-girlboss, and POC characters are disingenuously shoe-horned in or race-swapped, as if the creators want the expected backlash. They’re either incapable of creating authentic diverse characters, or perhaps believe said characters are incapable of nuance and depth.

Misleading, uh uh. If this was a drive thru I'm speaking to the manager, I didn't get what I ordered lol I wished they went into more detail about his character, like maybe his haircut. The first order wouldn't have allowed that haircut. That was his choice. Would have been cool to see that. It's a part of Finn's individuality. He wasn't allowed to be a normal human so being human in a way is new to him since he wasn't allowed the luxury of good food, hologram programs, haircuts, life's pleasures, etc. I would say I'd like a finn movie or series but I think that's not possible anymore. John Boyega got burned out of star wars and I don't blame him if he doesn't wanna be in it ever again. What's weird is Oscar Isaac was willing to voice his character in Star Wars Resistance. When was that exactly? Wait no that was definitely before rise of Skywalker and before he made it public he didn't like where his character was going.

yeah i think it's pretty telling that some people attack actors directly, but then again isn't that everything? People rarely blame the larger power. Disney doesn't mind that Ingram got those messages, in fact im willing to bet they counted on it with their history. They want the controversy because it acts as a shield for their terrible writing. One thing on Saw Gerrera. In Rogue One, he didn't seem all that interesting with very little development. But that's because he was an already established character from The Clone Wars TV show. He actually lost his sister fighting CIS forces. His sister was a great leader who looked out for everyone who fought under her, but Saw on the other hand was a fighter. All he knew was how to fight and when his sister died, he tried to take over her role. Thing is, in Rogue One we can see how his character has developed over time since SW:TCW. He became a lot more violent, almost becoming impatient as well. No plans, no leadership. Even less than in TCW. He's taken a lot of shortcuts and it shows. You don't get that sense from watching Rogue One on it's own, but if you known him from TCW, you'll probably appreciate what they did with him in Rogue One. But that's just my take on that in particular. Edit: I didn't know that the casual community was fecking toxic as well. I'm kind of a lorebeard, and we're pretty much accepting of anyone who shows interest in the lore of this universe. But to hear that the casual fanbase pushes people away who don't agree with their shitty skin-coloured narratives fecking sucks. Like for real, if you're black and you feel like the casual audience pushes back against you, join us. We'd love to have more people discussing interesting characters and lore.

There's a surprisingly large amount of niches when it comes to lore too. Something for everyone.

@@NorthEevee Yes. Saw is an interesting character because he's a window into what war can do to people. He fought in the Clone Wars and as much as they sacrificed much for victory, the rise of the Empire invalidated it all. Over time he became more desperate and extreme, even clashing with the other Rebel factions in pursuit of the mission. He's someone who's lost everything else, and only knows fighting. Only cares about victory. He shows us the side of the Rebellion that isn't idealistic and ethically inclined - lending complexity to the faction that we don't often see. Rebels and Jedi Fallen Order detail this more, and allow us to see his progression at different points. Rogue One shows us the end of that journey, when even Saw has come to the point of being tired of fighting. Both his attitude and appearance illustrate the toll war can take on people. It's sad really. He was on a relentless mission to uncover and stop the Death Star project, but he fell just short of getting to witness the triumph of the Rebels against it. Rogue One is honestly a good film. It really shows how much sacrifice it took to buy the Rebel's defining victory.

@@NorthEevee Yes, I've never cared about "race" and gender in Star Wars. It never factored in for me because it seems like such a petty concern. Even the universe itself largely ignores it. There's something to be said about the real-world aspect of it, and how disney uses progressivism as a marketing tool, but doesn't care about it beyond that. But disney doesn't represent Star Wars, they just purchased it. As for the Star Wars community itself: From what I've seen, they're open to anything and don't care about such superficial aspects as long as it's good Star Wars. Rey and Rose are disliked because they're bad characters, not out of misogyny. Most fans I've seen talk about Finn lament the way Disney wasted his character, and sympathize John Boyega - and the same can be applied to most of the sequel's cast to a degree. It has nothing to do with race. As for Reva(?), the fans see her as someone unnecessarily pushed to the forefront of a story that should only focus on Kenobi and Vader - and there are several other issues with that story already. As someone who venerates and reveres Kenobi, I'm particularly defensive about any form meddling with his character and story, and will not be pleased if the "bait and switch" turns out to be real. I also don't want Ewan and Hayden to have to come back for another Star Wars project only to receive more criticism because disney just didn't care about doing a good job, they don't deserve that. Disney is only using "diversity" as a shield for lazy work, and these complaints are the blowback. For all of his flaws, this would have never happened under Lucas . . .

@@Distractingly_Dope firstly because Disney is approaching Star Wars like a corporation. It’s one of the saddest things to think about when you realize that while George did objectively care about making money because any businessman does, you could see a Lucasfilm was his way of avoiding the problematic, profit driven, soulless machine of Hollywood filmmaking. Disney Lucasfilm has great PR but in truth they really are everything George didn’t want Star Wars to represent. No offense to the individual creators trying their best, but the culture of the Disney and Lucasfilmis far from what it used to be. It’s done good in some areas and failed in many others

@@TheFirstOkiro yea its very creatively.. stale and emotionless in areas. It's really just lacking in substance and message. The message of the sequels was.. hmm well in 7 and 8 is that Rey the no one became Rey the someone. Then 9 says she's a Palpatine. The main issue I see is Filoni, Jon, and the other great star wars writers haven't been given enough creative control or permission to make something really meaningful and lasting. One of the things that made the OT so great is the triumphant story of a farm guy that blows up the death star and learns how to become a Jedi. P. S. Disney star wars, apart from revisiting George's works, almost always lacks in substance and message within the story.

It's astonishing that people go "Star Wars is so political now." JUST because they're being more diverse. Yet they have no problem with the actual story being politically based something that has had ties to Star Wars since 1977. And then people will bring up the dumbest counterpoint "why not focus on alien species then? Why only focus on humans?" When Ahsoka Tano is literally right there and right behind Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi in terms of popularity. There's nothing wrong with criticizing the acting, or dialogue, or script. It says a lot in the first place that the Rey/Kylo Ren pairing had/has such a huge fanbase compared to the Rey/Finn pairing. They would sooner accept their supposedly feminist heroine getting with the incel neonazi school shoo*er than with a black guy who's just a genuine and kind-hearted dude.

In The Force Awakens Finn and Rey had chemistry together in that film. I really hope it would build up more, but then it was ignored and replaced with Rey loving Kylo Ren, it didn't make a lot of sense and turn the films inconsistent with one another. This happened because of Disney think more about their Chinese audiences more than the whole world who tolerates or can handle interracial romance.

I love when a specific section of "fans" says that "Star Wars is a galaxy populated by aliens, it is already diverse." Yeah right. A galaxy full of either weird aliens and white people. As a white guy who loves Star Wars I'm happy that's turning around already. This is how the future is actually represented. Look, I thought Rey was terribly written, but it has nothing about "feminist agendas" or any reactionary buzzwords- it's just that the writing was lazy. And that doesn't mean there weren't misogynists criticizing the same character! It's okay not to like Jake Lloyd's performance as Anakin, but can we at least say that he had no right to be bullied? It doesn't matter where the attacks on Kelly Tran came from, the fact that she was chased off social media is the issue! Honestly this just reminds me how sad I was to see Fin lose out on a lot of character development and interesting routes to go with his character after Force Awakens. I was so excited to see where it would go because Boyega did a phenomenal job in his role, and felt like the main character through the entire first movie. They set his character up to be the hero that realized what the first order did was wrong and that others within their ranks could see the same thing, and they could have had 8 or 9 come to the climax of an effective civil war within the first order itself, even if the defectors lose, it would have destroyed the ranks of the first order and sent a message to the galaxy that one person stood up to the bad guys and caused a chain reaction that helped protect everyone from a much worse fate.

John Boyega should have been Mace Windu 2.O and lead a stormtrooper rebellion against the First Order. Force Awakens trailer spelled it out perfectly. From trooper, to wanderer, to Resistance fighter and finally a lightsaber weirder fighting his boss Kylo Ren. HOW THE FUCK THE JJ ABRAMS RUIN THAT?! Rose should have been a soldier to honor her fallen soldier sister like in the beginning of Last Jedi. No reason for Rose to have been a mechanic, that was Rey's thing. There was no reason for Val from Solo to have been killed off. She could have been a Rebel trooper later. Then again Solo shouldn't have been made anyway. Rey should have just been a non powered hero. Her being a Batman type would have been fine with her.

JJ had an original script for The Force awakens and it had Finn & Rey being revealed as force sensitive after Maz Kanata showed them the Skywalker Lightsaber, that and Finn had a MUCH BIGGER role in the original script than he does in the current movie. Blame Disney for making JJ change his script in order to sideline Finn for Ep 8. We were going to get something amazing from JJ and his crew but because of Disney bowing to racism, not giving them more much needed time (Because originally, Ep 7 was supposed to come out in Winter of 2016. Bob Iger who was the former head of Disney said no to this.) and sidelining the one character that would've brought in that very much needed diversity through a Black fanbase, The ENTIRE ST suffered as a Result. If you don't believe me, just watch Okiro's video on Finn The LOST Protagonist. It's an excellent deep dive into how Finn is the real protagonist of the ST and how sidelining him really just hurt the ST overall. I recommend you watch it.

Disney really cared more about how John was going to be accepted by audiences, at the expense of actually making a compelling story… a stormtrooper turned Jedi or stormtrooper turned rebel who falls in love with a Jedi would’ve been a huge upgrade than what we ultimately got. I will never forgive them for the way they treated John Boyega. Finn was by far the most interesting new character. A storm troooper overcoming brainwashing and indoctrination to ecape and fight back against his oppressors. They also clearly were teasing him as being force sensitive and having him become one of the new Jedi fighting for freedom. That first movie set up his character perfectly and gave him an amazing arc. Going from just trying to escape and always wanting to run to joining up to fight back against the people who stole his entire life by kidnapping him and brainwashing him. That shot of him picking up the lightsaber and standing up against kylo ren was amazing for that character. Then the second movie made him repeat that arc. Made him comic relief. No force ability. The last movie he juat screamed Rey and ran around generally being dumb for cheap laughs. It was so disrespectful to the actor and the fans and the story. Plus the whole poster in china bullshit.

Let’s take a trip back to 2015 leading up to the release of The Force Awakens. The trailers all focus fairly heavily on Finn. People were pretty interested in the story of a Stormtrooper turned hero, and the hype was real. The movie (in my opinion) does a pretty great job at delivering it. There’s no way you can look at the trilogy as a whole now and not recognize that they really dropped the ball on how to handle Finn’s character. Awful to see since I love Maeve and still really like Dolores, though it's harder to do so knowing she's a reason my fave was done dirty. If Star Wars were to do better and be braver with representation, hopefully that would encourage more studios. Thank you so much for calling out Disney's problems there so brilliantly!

Can't wait to see what they do with Blade. The character of Fynn had so much potential but from the moment he runs into Rey, he was turned to shitty, comedic relief.

My only issue was that we didn't see more of Finn. When the trailer for episode 6 came out I thought he would be a Jedi.

Her character is going to die; after being turned back to the light, to save Kenobi. She doesn't matter, the actress role is of no consequences of any sort.but hey they got more then Marvel or D.C so far?....🤦🏽‍♂️

You know what made me angry? EVERYONE wanted to see John Boyega become the jedi, the main character. I was pissed at the bait n switch we got from the posters and trailers.

It’s ironic given that everyone thinks the fandom treats them bad, but it’s Disney that treats them far worse. I think in general, there is a problem with how characters in Star Wars are depicted Women are not giving any complexity. Men are made out to be incompetent. Characters of color are usually just props. It’s unfortunate. It’s not the case all of the time, but it is a problem

@@TheFirstOkiro Yeah it made me really reevaluate and appreciate Lando in the OT. The fact that he redeems himself and ends of being the hero who flies the millennium falcon in the end and destroys the Death Star was pretty ahead of its time. I’m not sure if Disney would have the guts to do that nowadays since it can’t be easily edited out or sidelined for the Chinese release.

Honestly, Finn was the character I wanted most to see developed in the sequels, but Lucasfilm and Disney did him dirty. I mean, a janitor? The Star Wars universe have droids for that. And then he became the comic relief, and then Force-sensitive (as I suspect he was originally intended to be) in a far-too-little-far-too-late writing move. While I acknowledge that there are racist fans, I also accuse Lucasfilm of being bigger racists by sidelining their POC actors and then using them as a virtue shield against criticisms of their lackluster productions. POC actors are doubly exploited in these ways.

I just don't like Moses Ingram because I think she's a bad actor. Imo she has the worst performance out of any actor in the first episode, excluding child actors. I think they should have just gotten a better actor to play the Third Sister.

You have some good points, but in regards to looking at the CHARACTERS I think it’s important to be able to criticize characters without being labeled racist or sexist. Reva is not a very good character. A lot of the new characters are not very good.

The character of Reva the 3rd sister is in itself racist because once again in pop culture, we have a loud, angry Black Woman. Could have been anything else as a villain. Cold and calculating. Trilla the 2nd sister certainly was that. In the same game we had Debra Wilson as a character who broke the Black stereotype. The character of Reva is the type of character you don't even love to hate and just can't wait till she gone and with that ignorant statement that she's the first Woman of color in the Star Wars.universe tells me in real life, she isn't much better. I hate virtue signalling on all it's forms as well as blatant narcissism.

I agree that all of these characters were shity and had no reason to be in star wars but I wouldn't go out of my way to directly harass the actors I mean the Rey nobody's actor(dont remember her name) was not a particularly good actress almost nobody was in the sequels but still I will talk shit about these actors online except jar jar's(after the clone wars I actually like his character) but going to them and harassing them is unacceptable it is objectively wrong and should not be done

I feel Disney will keep using racism and sexism as an excuse to hide bad writing and characters. Any criticism, genuine criticism not targeted at a person’s background will be dismissed. Reva is a poorly written character cast with actor who is not fit for that role, nothing to do with gender or race.

I don't really care about "representation" in Star Wars, and I think you're being a bit unfair on Lando (there's also Mace Windu if we're talking about important Black characters in Star Wars) but you're right that good Black characters are few and far between, *especially* in the Disney Star Wars projects, which don't have the dubious excuse of being decades old. I think mostly that's just poor luck rather than lack of trying, but in the case of John Boyega they really did him dirty. Not only was the marketing suggesting that he would be the protagonist, not only is he a far more interesting character than Rey, but he is also a notably better actor than Daisy Ridley. He didn't need to be the main character (and I'm sure if he was we'd see the same moaning from women about how they're never the main characters in Star Wars) but the fact they didn't even give him an arc is such a waste. Also, on the topic of the "Black villain" archetype in Star Wars, I'd be interested to know if you consider Vader to be one? Obviously Anakin is a White character, but we never see his skin colour in the first film, and he is voiced by a Black man. That coupled with his all-black costume I think makes him worthy of consideration, and it would be interesting to think about whether his influence on the franchise is a big part of why this archetype for Black actors exists.

Yeah, Star Wars hasn’t done a great job representing people of color in the lead role. I think a good start would be to have Greef Karga lead in the rangers of the new republic show. It could be an easy set up too. Just say Cara Dune is MIA and they need a new ranger for the sector.
