I hope you enjoy this newest video idea! I honestly couldn't decide on how to end this skit... Would she be understanding? Would she have a complete meltdown? Since I couldn't decide, I thought, "Why not both?!"

Honestly, what the guest should have done is ask, "Well, how long do you suppose the wait will be?" Then, after getting a ballpark time, made the decision then whether the wait was worth it or not.

I would say that clerk should have volunteered that information instead of saying "a while". Presumably the guest in the room has given them an actual time they are leaving, and the clerk says that houskeeping had a plan, so she should be be able to ballpark when the room would be ready.

The fact that she gave you a room with a balcony and ocean view is compensation. You apparently paid for an average room and she was "upgrading" with the caveat that it would take longer for the room to be ready. With that said, better communication would have prevented this situation. Tell the guest that there was a prepaid late check in and housekeeping can't start cleaning until after that late check in which is approximately so many hours from when they were checking in so that party could determine if they wanted a regular room or wait for the upgraded room.

And there's the fact that she increased gradually the time before asking, and didn't go further until after check-out time. So, I'll say she's more likely to understand, but if she doesn't, it would be HELL.

I hope that the main girl understands, but one of her friends overhears the conversation and blows up. That would be SOOOOO interesting. Like I know soo many people who are reasonable and understanding about delays, but people accompanying them tend to be more pushy and rude.

I would vote for this too. This girl has that seed of entitlement, but doesn't seem to have the voraciousness to be loud about it. Her friends however... Well, entitlement loves company and I'm sure at least one of them is the loud to her quiet.

As a person who worked customer service jobs for years... I'm shocked that she didn't blow up at the first check in apon finding out that the hotel didn't telepathicly know she wanted ocean view and upgrade her to a suite as a free girls-trip bonus. After all, that's what hotels are for, right?

It's like when guest book a Queen/King room but want two twin beds. They are like yeah we did order a King but we want a twin and the hotel, well you didn't book it and we don't have it available and they are like yeah but we are not a couple. How are we supposed to know that.

Just because I do encounter SO MANY guests blowing out when the Smallest details are not "perfect" in their room, I will vote for the understanding ending. It would be a nice change!

I think so too. She takes the bar vouchers and end up with a few drinks while waiting for their room.

While the Blow-up ending does seem rather extreme, the client does seem to come across as a little entitled. That being said, the worker could have conveyed how long the delay could have been, especially if they already knew housekeeping would be getting to that room late. To be honest, I'm not sure *either* ending seems appropriate. Thanks as always, Jessica.

I remember reading books like this when I was a kid. I totally loved them bc it's so cool to go through all the scenarios! It actually is what caused me to become so interested in writing my own short stories.

"it's going to be awhile." First question I ask "best guess on rough time? I don't need an exact number." If it's a time I'm willing to wait, next question "is there a place I can leave my bags while I wait? We're going to go out to dinner while we wait for the room."

She responds in a perfectly reasonable way to the fact that she has to wait longer for her last minute special request, being happy that she will get it at all, of course. Right?

Clearly Epic Blow Up - that is what we come for! But do both since I'm curious what else you can do with understanding guest. BTW, I once watched Morgan Donner do Choose Your Own Adventure and she had soooo many options to work through, that I'm not even sure if I watched them all. No pressure to do this in the future, but worth checking out.

The crazy timing- just yesterday my sister & I were talking about those choose the next action books where at the bottom of each page has instructions like 'if you take the right fork go to page 123. If you dollow down the left fork go to page 321"

A big issue was telling her that the room will not be ready for a while. Time frame for many people when told “for a while” is in minutes not hours. It would have better to give a realistic time frame with an hour beyond what it probably take to have the room available. That way you do not have the group sitting there waiting for the room to become available.

Or use a generic phrase bc there's no way to guarantee a time, and don't expect the front desk person to schedule their day for them unless she'll be bumped to to a life coach/personal assistant level of pay.

Awhile means just that doesn’t it?!? I show up early to request a specific room type and I’ll wait until late afternoon sometimes as it’s the one I want. I leave my bags and go out for the day. Happy to wait for the room I want.

Think I would have responded to the request with " I have good news, we have that room, but it will take an addition X hours to be ready, and of course the $$$ update fee."

I feel like this girl isn’t someone to blow up like that I’m sure she would understand, so I would say that she understood, got her free drink and went shopping until the room was ready coz that’s what I would personally do lol

Maybe this video was just a short summary of a larger dialogue. Her request was late, but normal. The receptionist should have told her abiut te late departure and a time frame, "a while" could be anything. And without the backstory, it really seems like the guests just now payed to delay their departure. Therefore one round of free drinks was fair.

I would give them an idea of roughly how long it would take (always add extra to ensure the room is ready by then) before offering an alternative.

Hieeee I know we already asked for something special, and you accommodated that request without an extra charge, but can we please now also have MORE free things as punishment to you for giving me one free thing? This is going to be a melt-down girl group. As a couple other commenters have said, they're going to turn Karen Brigade on this poor clerk.

At my hotel we had that issue while I was in training. Previous job we would have given them then a later check out time too, but current one is if it's not on our list as vacant inspected it doesn't exist until it does.

I think you should explain to the guest that unfortunately you did not realize but someone had already booked that room previously before she arrived and you missed it on the check in, so she would have to go back to her original room.

given she was told it would be awhile and she was asking 10 or 20 minutes later if it was ready, I'd expect an epic blow up. Now, I typically don't think to ask if I can get a special room upon check in, but if I was checking in and was told it would be awhile, I'd either ask how long because I wanted to be in soon, or I'd go out to eat and then check back and ask. Either way, asking for compensation when you're waiting for essentially an upgrade room was a bit much already. If it were me I'd either wait or say just give me the regular room, but wouldn't blow up unless I had been waiting excessively for a room that was booked ahead of time. but then I'm the one who questions when being offered an upgrade room, for instance I don't want the king bed upgrade if it means one less bed in the room.

For openers, you wanted to CHANGE ROOMS, so there's no obligation to adjust the scheduling the cleaning of the new room to be done ahead of the others already in cue. Knowing the mentality of a lot of people now a days: even if they started with the 'i understand,' it would end the fire storm of tantrums and 'talk to your manager, supervisor, corporate' 15 minutes later (due to the frequent checking in on progress scenario). Me: as long as i can keep my luggage behind the counter or some other secure space that i access should i need something from it, i have no worries. Just as long as its before dinner, or at worst, i want to crash for the evening.

Alternative ending: they go to bar, find the loves of their lives, and now the ladies are who should get the nicer room instead of the normal available rooms. At the same time, a soccer team is checking in and time is off the essence. Will the ladies decide in time? Or will this Karens be SOL and faced to face karma on their trip?

whenever this has happened when my family has been on vacation where the room is gonna be Awhile, my mom asks the desk: oh is there somewhere we can leave our luggage so we can go out and about until its ready? and 9 out of ten times they say yes, roll our luggage behind the desk and slap a reservation number on it. and one time, they were even put in our room when it was ready by staff.

I think its never the polite person that gets mad, its usually her friend that got drunk, flirted with the bartender, got rejected and already hates the hotel that wants a reason for wveryone to hate the hotel and want to leave...so i choose ending two, but with a slight modification to make it interesting 😈

The way "probably won't be for a while" was said so awkwardly means at least 2-3 hours, I can asked about it. So definitely don't sit in the lobby instead go have some fun at the beach.

Honestly, I enjoy these videos, but often find myself thinking the receptionist could have been more clear too. There is a difference between "might not be ready for a while" and "won't be ready for hours". Especially when you know they are hanging around waiting to get in.

This representative should have called room service, gained a different time of room readiness, and then said to the prospective guest, The room should be ready at .... Then the guest could have returned in a reasonable matter. Now, that said, if said guest was getting.. rude, then I would have said, "Mam.. I explained earlier about the room, yet, you have not been patient, however, I have provided you with a time. If you continue to be rude, I will ask you to 1. Accept any room we have available, 2. Wait patiently, 3. Leave, with no refund.

Two problems here: (1) People often don't call anymore. The number of times I've been told I'd get a phone call when something was ready only to check back way later and be told, "Oh, this was ready two hours ago, didn't anyone call you?" No, they f*ckin' didn't, and thanks for wasting my time. And (2), "a while" means _very_ different things to different people. Give an actual time estimate like, "It's 3:30 now, check back around 5:30".

See if I was her would’ve expected to wait for a few hours at least. But when I deal with customers I try to say things like half an hour wait or few hours because “awhile” is really quite open to interpretation. Though I don’t get why she and her friends didn’t just leave their luggage and hit the beach or something? Until the room is ready

I don’t understand why she even feels entitled to compensation when it’s a special request she made at checkin. Maybe if she’d called ahead or made the request when booking, there wouldn’t even have been a wait. That said, the smart thing to do when informed it’ll be a while is get a ballpark idea of how long, then go have fun while waiting.

No special treatment for the wait as it may make them think they are in the right and that indeed you are making them wait more than they should even thought it was their choice as they want a specific room and not taking any other

There should have been more clarity about what constitutes "a while" in the first instance. That may have helped manage expectations and possibly avoided an upset, although some people remain entitled, regardless of the prevailing circumstances.
