Venkman's voice actor was epic. Lorenzo Music also did a lot of radio commercials and I remember as a kid hearing his voice in a radio commercial and thinking "That's Venkman, they got Venkman to do their commercial".

It's hilarious because Lorenzo played Venkman and Garfield, and Bill Murray acted as Peter Venkman and Voiced Garfield lol

Fun coincidence about Peter's Casey Jones bit. There was a 1912 recording of The Ballad of Casey Jones, just twelve years after the famed trainwreck, by a very popular singer named...Billy Murray. 😕 You can extrapolate this connection further, by noting that the casting of Dave Coulier was also a trainwreck.

Well here's the difference: cartoon Egon would take charge and be the reassuring, scientific mind with all the answers. Make sense on a kid's show. Whereas in the first movie, Egon didn't seem all that comfortable around people, period, much less taking charge. Both great interpretations, just different. And then in Ghostbusters II (maybe in response to the cartoon?), you see Egon being more at ease, cracking more dry humor jokes, while still maintaining a more adult tone than the cartoon.

So here’s a fun fact J. Michael Straczynski was a story writer for the original He-Man cartoon. When I was watching the episode “The Game” from He-Man I noticed the plot was almost identical to the Ghostbusters episode “The Night Game”. It wasn’t just coincidence J.M.S wrote both of those episodes! His ties to Filmation are even referenced in the Ghostbusters episode “Station Identification” where there is a parody version of He-Man!

Janine (before Q5) is one of my favourite female characters. Character and looks.

Now that the official Ghostbusters KZfaq channel is uploading episodes of both cartoon series, I'm able to see first hand just how well the writing and performances of the original show hold up. It's still a great cartoon.

J. Michael Straczynski is the main reason why I think the show was so good

It’s honestly a GODSEND that the GOOD episodes barely outnumbered the BAD/Q5 episodes. It would be a crime against humanity if it turned out that more than half of the show SUCKED so bad.

Lorenzo Music is one of those men who were in short supply, it seems. I also love how at 9:22 you mentioned that his version of Peter might have some underlying depression. I don't know why, but I always appreciated that sentiment and the imagery you chose to represent that the best.

I started watching this show because I had bronchial pneumonia and couldn't move, so I'd just lay there like a dead trout and watch TV all day as my ravaged lungs healed. Every day at 4pm, The Real Ghostbusters would come on, and fortunately for me, it wasn't the later, bad episodes, the run I was watching was all syndicated episodes. It was amazing. Now I own the box set that looks like Ghostbuster Central. There are dvds I am probably going to wear out, and others that I could use for coasters under cold drinks.

I discovered Ghostbusters through the cartoon and toyline too. I actually thought the movie was based on the cartoon for many years not the other way around.

These Real Ghostbusters videos have made me realize just how much J. Michael Straczynski was/is involved in the media I consume. Whether it was cartoons like this, sci-fi shows like Babylon 5 & Captain Power, or super hero comics, J. Michael Straczynski's name shows up all the time. I feel as if to say he's prolific would be an understatement.

My favorite episode is "Knock, Knock". The scene where a group of ghost possess a bunch of subway trains then wriggle into the tunnels is one of my most vivid childhood memories. Their creepy screams really stuck with me. I think I was 6 or 7 when I saw that episode.

Phelous, I've been stuck in my room all week with a horrible head cold but one of the few positive things that has come from this miserable week has been discovering this channel, thanks for making these entertaining videos!

That "Chicken I Cluck" episode reminds me of an equally stupid yet well written episode of GI Joe called "The Viper". The basic premise of "The Viper" is actually a stupid joke based upon one of the Joe's misunderstanding a phone call from the window washer he hired to clean the windows of his family business and thinking that it was actually a Cobra plot to assassinate him. The comedy comes into play when they confront Cobra Commander after a pointless battle that the joe's ended up staring for no particular reason and demand to know who "The Viper" is and CC/Destro are just as mystified as they are about what is happening leaving CC wondering is that particular Joe has "lost his marbles" and Destro quipping "perhaps we all need a vacation".

Dude, this has got to be one of the most fan appreciated, heartfelt, detailed, and yet objective, fair, and informative reviews I've ever seen. To say nothing of the fact that it's one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE 80S TOONS and I could remmeber the scripts from EVERY EPISODE save ONE that you showed! Miss Lorenzo Music, and wanna meet Arsenio Hall to shake his hand for this. I agree with everything you said here, as will *any* REAL Ghostbuster's fan [pun intended]. They don't make shows like this anymore, and we're all the worse for it, and frankly I am *pissed off* that they are TRYING to pass this soon to be out piece of tripe looking abomination as a NEW Ghostbuster's film!!!! *Buuuuuuuuut* .... we will reserve proper judgement until we see it. Till something better comes along, we have this awesome show and the comic books that still hold true to the awesomeness that is the world of GB. Good job, my dude; your efforts are appreciated. To be fair towards Ghostbusters 2, the reason Janine and Egon doesn't happen is because Harold Ramis didn't like the idea. (Which makes it feel kinda awkward when I think about how I disagree with him on that...)

I like coming back to this video every once in a while. Just seeing you so passionate about this series brings a smile to my face. :)

On the plus side, the High Quality series was 78 episodes.

I have so many favorite episodes there's too many to list. Like the episode "Play the Devil" I love the part when Ray and Winston are called by Dib and you can see Ray dancing happily. Then there's the part where after Winston and Ray when the first round Peter had Egon in a bear hug and he's jumping up in down with glee while saying "Egon! Egon! Egon We won! We're going to Tahiti!" I thought those two scenes were so cute!!

It still blows me away that JMS wrote this. He wrote Babylon 5 AND huge chunks of The Real Ghostbusters? Dude was a writing genius machine of fucking god tier badassness.

Just started to rewatch the cartoons after watching the Real Ghostbusters "The Bad Episodes" episode and thank God that I made the right choice to only stick with the first two seasons and that's it.

I can't stop imagining Frank Welker as someone other than Fred from Scooby Doo for some reason. Maybe it's the certain tone and accent that he gives out.

My favorite Ghostbuster who I identified with as a child in the 80s was and still is Egon. I never saw anything in Slimer and I loved it when Peter zaps him.

At 21:47, Slimer pretty much says "Godis", which is "Candy" is Swedish. That must have been or purpose.

I source Janine as one of the reasons why I adore redheads as an adult. Well one of the three reasons but like Phelan I was three when this series started as well.

I will admit, I didn't have as much an attachment to this show as I did with Extreme Ghostbusters as a kid. Revisiting it as an adult didn't grab me due to the animation quality. But listening to Phelan talk and hearing some of the snappy one liners/character moments? IDK, maybe I'll give it another shot :).

That bit about the show having an anime vibe is literally so true.... thinking of that scene where they fall and land on top of each other and bounce a bit as they land, definitely some anime physics going on there. (Also appreciate how often Peter is drawn with a ":3" mouth... I know that's supposed to be a sardonic smile but it just reads as him being a catboy)

I really appreciate all your RGB output. It's a show that's so fun to meditate on, and revisiting it usually turns over new reasons to fall in love with it again.

I was always irritated that Ghostbusters II didn't incorporate the cartoon continuity into it.

The Real Ghostbusters was a big part of my childhood, so thank you loads for bringing all those memories back! I also didn't know anything about there being both ABC and Syndicated episodes, so I will have to look up what was and wasn't released in the UK. If we had all the (good) episodes or not.

It was because of Phelous's reviews of The Real Ghostbusters that I went and brought myself the complete first series on DVD.

I always loved Janine, she was such a badass! And while I was too young to be fully aware of the changes at the time (this wasn't my favourite show but I did watch it a fair amount), after watching the bad episodes video I really hate what they made her into.

I love the review and I like the cartoon version of Egon a little bit more as well. The only episode in which they had to rescue Janine (the first version) was in episode Ghost Busted when they became Crimebusters.

You knew Lorenzo Music as Garfield, but we older fans were first introduced to him as the voice of Carlton the Doorman on "Rhoda" (a Mary Tyler Moore spinoff).

Great video, some of that must have taken ages. Worth it to note that Ghostbusters often had an anime feel, not so much because of the storyboards, but because a large bulk of the episodes (The well animated ones) were all animated in Japan.

Hey, Phelous. One fact I'm surprised you skimmed over was the fact that Haim Saban & Shuki Levy did much of the music for the four ABC Seasons & the syndicated episodes.

You kind of did realize your dream and became that Peter Vankman. You became a sarcastic, sometimes deadpan comedy guy in a Ghostbusters suit that the audience cherishes.

I find it ironic that the live action version of Garfield is played by Bill Murray.

I don't want to come off as a jerk here, but I think I got the last interview with Buster Jones before he passed away. Unfortunately that interview was lost due to my computer and second hard drive crapping out at the exact time. with the say it he was an amazing person and just left me in awe the whole time. IN a way I am glade that interview wasn't release because most of it was me saying, "Oh wow, what you have to say is way more interesting than the questions I had prepared to ask you." He was just an amazing person that over coed so much and was just so opened with his life. To this day I still kick myself for loosing all of it. He had some amazing stories to tell as well as some amazing life lessons.

I've thought that Buster Jones did a better job portraying Winston than Dave Coulier and Kath Soucie did as Peter and Janine respectively.

This show never frightened me much as a kid. Whereas Scooby Doo scared the hell out of me!

I always like Lorenzo Music as Peter but could never get into Dave Coulier, made him sound him like a surfer. I always heard that Bill Murray had something to do with Lorenzo getting replaced because he didn't want Peter Venkman being associated with Garfield.

I never watch long videos or reviews on youtube, but I watched this and have to compliment you on the thoroughness of the analyses you have presented. You echoed some of the things I really could never put my finger on regarding the differences between the early and later seasons and clarified the points on cast, writing, and character. Nostalgia overload! I remember how excited I was to watch the first episode the same saturday morning my family and I were supposed to go to disneyland. My parents kept yelling at me to get ready while I just kept yelling back "OKAY!" but still glued to the tv. I watched your video about bad episodes before this one. I think that was the best for me to do to get the best taste in my mouth for this show and being sure how many episodes where actually good. I am from Sweden but I don´t know why I love Lorenzos voice so much. It´s calm and laid back. I really love him as Garfield but everyline here as Peter just cracks me up. We did get the show over here but I don´t know how many episodes. Hopefully just the first 78 good ones. In Sweden we usually don´t manage to get so far into a show before a new one comes around. Sweden was really late around 1988 to start dubbing for television. Just some special cases like Disney related got dubbed. But it was a storm when it started with TV. And sadly we did´t have that many voice actors at first. It was viewed as something lower form of work for an actor. For Ghost busters we had 6 voices in total. The four ghostbusters, Jenny and one more to play some extra character´s. I think we just had Slimer keep is original sounds since it was just gibberish anyway. But even those four Main character´s did some extra voices too. It could get really annoying when you heard the same voice for a side character done by Peter for example talking to eachother with similar voices. But the voices where icons for us and we still appreciate them. Sadly we have´t gotten the DVD over here. That goes for most of the 80´s and 90´s cartoon´s. They are not available here in any shape or form unless you recorded everything on VHS.

I just marathoned these ghost busters episodes! I was always so confused as a kid about the difference in animations and styles and names of the different shows!

THEY JUST ADDED THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS TO NETFLIX, not sure if I'm dreaming, if nexflix is doing this as a April fools joke, or if I died and went to heaven.
