What’s it like to live without running water? How are the fruit and vegetables - avocados, asparagus, exotic fruit - that end up on our supermarket shelves sucking Peru’s land dry?
In Peru’s sprawling capital, Lima, this is the everyday reality for 1.5 million children and adults, forced to pay up to a week’s salary for just one day’s water. And the problem isn’t confined to the capital, across the country, the shortage of water is putting lives in danger and provoking conflict, as it displaces communities and threatens their agricultural livelihoods.
In Lima we meet some of the families struggling to live without one of life’s basic necessities. With only a few litres of water a week, their children’s health is at risk, and they’re at the mercy of unscrupulous businessmen, whose water trucks sell allegedly contaminated water at inflated prices. For others, the situation is even bleaker - we meet the community without access to any form of water supply - forced to beg their neighbours every day for enough water to wash and cook.
This film goes right to the heart of the water crisis - showing how society’s poorest are caught in the middle of a struggle between business, climate change and international politics.

There's plenty of water in Lima, we are sorrounded by 3 mayor rivers, the problem is that sanitation infraestructure doesn't reach those areas. Like it's very lopsided, in some districts of Lima the waters comes in small man made rivers and it's incredibly lush and full of parks, and in others (mostly favelas) they have to be reached with trucks. I could tell you many reasons why the government or the middle class don't are about the people in the favelas, but sadly it's mostly corruption and lack of funding. Sadly these people do not have a voice

This is exactly how non-white people practice white supremacist ideologies upon other non-white people. The lifestyle that those of the upper classes are living is not traditional to their culture, it's western and that western lifestyle that they are living is directly the cause of this issue.

Western governments/coorperations are the ones in power since colonisation. They are the ones steeling the water so they can bottle it and sell it primalary to socalled first world countries. Its people like you who are partly responsible for these people suffering and lack of basic necessities. Its something the inhibitants of western nations should start acknowledge, the price people on the other side of the world pay so they can live as if they own the world.

Having lived in Peru for a month I feel it’s more of a sanitization problem. They really need to add infrastructure and education on how to treat water. If you ever visit there in most buildings you can actually smell the sewage, that’s not good. In some areas in America we actually turn sewage water from the toilet into fresh clean drinking water. They’re lacking in technology on how to purify water on a large scale.

For instance, she mentioned that she pays around 200 soles or 53 usd(at the time of writing) while my father only pays 60 to 70 soles or just below 18.6 usd a month, which is the comsumption by my family and the tennants.

Those denuded hills around Lima are a big factor in the water shortage there, which is common and we have learned how to fix it. If you plant native trees up the hills, create water catchments (fog nets, as in the video, but also importantly ditches, ponds, and swales), and plant native cover plants and food crops between swales or on terraces, you recharge the aquifers and provide supplemental food and more accessible water to the people. All of these only need labor to dig and plant, seeds or cuttings or transplants of the trees and crops, and protection from grazing, excessive traffic, and drought while they are getting established. They take time, but are not difficult or expensive. Also, you can build rainwater capture tanks with simple filtration for every house, nursery, school, and so on, with simple local materials. They can be built from native clay or concrete, with the upper part using sand, charcoal, etc, to filter it before it drips through a ceramic divider filter to the accessible tank for direct use. Again, this is very inexpensive and can make a big difference in a short time. I feel so helpless knowing that there are options to improve situations like these people are dealing with and I don't have money or influence to make these things happen. Please, will you look up re-greening, permaculture, reversing desertification, and homemade water filtration and rainwater capture videos here and start a movement there to help these people? All you need is the information here on KZfaq and people willing to put in some work to improve their conditions and make life easier and safer where they live. Even better if the local government will help by contributing plants, digging tools, transportation to the sites, or even pay for the people doing the work.

Yes, the documentary is misleading. Most of the things shown in the docu are not from drought problems but from lack of infraestructure for water sanitation and distribution. Most of those favelas are settled on hyper arid desert mountains, where they settle and then wait for the government to construct the basic necessities.

Is hilarious to see the ex Mayor of Lima talking when she did less than zero in her period and she is currently processing for corruption; she is not a reliable source to speak of changes and talk about like she really cares about the situation of the rurals areas or souranded areas of Lima. By the way shortages of water as a result of farming is not accurate; the main problem here is the government which did not put any effort in infrastructure to improve the sewer and water system.

We are heading towards the same outcomes here in the US where people in the western states have settled in desert and drought stricken areas. Then drain the groundwater and pipe in from other states to grow crops and create false green communities. This foolishness is robbing our ground waters, and rivers for people to live in deserts and worse to grow crops where they should not be grown. Maybe we should all start thinking about living in area's that have adequate rainfall and are naturally green. Peru's problems are similar, people need to stop trying to live and grow in deserts.
@notashroom
@notashroom 2 жыл бұрын
This is true, but also the deserts mostly get that way from misuse of resources, especially overgrazing and monoculture farming. The Sahara used to be green and vibrant! Most likely the American Southwest was, as well, but ancient people used up the resources and only now are we beginning projects to recharge the aquifers. If we did that across the Southwest, it could fully recover in our lifetimes.

The first scenes in the documentary also bring up something important: exporting exotic foods to the other side of the planet (in this case from Peru to Finland) which has its own emissions. It's ridiculous that in a cold Nordic country like Finland you expect to enjoy the luxuries of living in the South by making everyone pay the price in terms of causing damage to the environment. Accept the conditions of the place where you live and don't ruin the environment just because you want the perks of other countries as well.

Those people move from the mountains to Lima. For a better life, but this is what they have to face. On the mountains life is better, they have water from manantiales, lakes rivers, etc. also they can grow produce and eat better. People think that Lima in the city of the opportunities, but is not like that.

This is crazy! 🤔 Peru is the third largest country in South America. That is home to a section of Amazon rainforest. It's has a variety of landscape mountain, beaches, rainforest. All these are evidence to that that water scarcity is impossible this is not Africa. It's fertile land I think if there government can't do about this they must be self- sufficient to look for an alternative to lessen the water scarcity. Without access to running their citizens is at risk for lack of proper sanitation that would lead the rising of diseases.

Brazil is the largest nation in South America. Peru is third largest after Argentina. You need to remember that 40% of the Peruvian population lives on the desert western coast. That is around 13 million people. Out of 13 million of the people living on the coast, 11 million live in a small area that makes up the Callao - Lima metro area.

Peruvian government's corruption make so difficult for the country to create project in a big scale. Most people in Peru sees politician jobs as way to make them rich quick. The country has so many touristic attractions and charge highly prices to the tourist; at the end all those revenues goes to the capital of Lima where they keep %85 and only %15 goes back for sites maintenance. Corruption and Centralization are a huge problem in this Andean country .

@@mayatsnyc Yeah that was exactly happened to most countries around the world. It's true it's impossible that Peru are experiencing such condition. Don't worry sir it's a matter of time. Once the people of Peru can no longer tolerate this change would come.🤔

Stolen content. Java does not own, nor did they pay the media company a licensing fee to distribute this program, with or without financial gain. All videos missing missing audio at some point in the program, has audio out of sync, or has added time at any point in the video - usually at the end of the program, in the form of music with a random slideshow is stolen content. The purpose of altering audio and/or adding time to a video is to circumvent YT's automated systems to detect and prevent original content from being uploaded. Watching stolen content not only rewards these thieves with massive ad revenue, but reduces the funds available for future projects by the media companies who've had their revenue stolen.
