In today's episode, Becket talks with Monique Duson about Critical Race Theory and how it's actually anti-biblical. We learn of her journey from a CRT activist to rejecting that philosophy and finding the real answers within Scripture. She shares about the extraordinary difficulties of growing up in South Central LA as well as a few harrowing events during her missionary work in South Africa. Monique gives us insight into how to understand racial issues biblically rather than through the lens of a secular humanistic worldview. Monique is a graduate of BIOLA University and currently getting her master's in theology at Talbot School of Theology. Her ministry's aim is to use Scripture to define terms like humanity, race, love, and justice. She wants to bring practical tools for clergy and lay people to walk out the ideals of racial unity and biblical justice.

ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from Austin College in Texas, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

That's why Christ established His Church in this world, that we call the Holy Catholic Church ('catholic' means universal/worldwide). He didn't leave us as orphans when He ascended to heaven. This one true Church preserves Christ's legacy until the end of time. Gates of hell will never prevail against It. The people in His Church may fail Him. But He continues to call those who love Him to rebuild His Church from within 🙏❤️

‘If you’re a Christian and you’re racist, you won’t like it in heaven because every tribe, tongue and nation will be there’. Yes, Becket, I’m so glad you said it - the obvious truth! Galatians 3:28 should be at the heart of every redeemed soul. Yes we may still be sinners this side of eternity but racism goes against the very heart of Christianity that Jesus died for all and if we don’t love one another (whom we have seen) how can you say we love God? (1 John 4:20) Thank you both for this great discussion - hope to see more of you two again in the future!

Great interview. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed. Ms. Duson spoke the it right! It all boils down to the heart. And you said it too Beckett; if we through the Holy Spirt, loved our neighbors, there would be no racism. That is to come in heaven and the new earth, not now. Funny how different our experiences can be. I’m a black woman with the opposite testimony. God had to deliver me to appreciate and love my own race because I was not accepted by my race. Whites for the most part took me in, not blacks. Ive always loved diversity of races, and as an adult, I’ve been teased and not welcomed because of loving racial diversity, but that’s okay. God has blessed me with solid believers from every race who love me and I love them.

I went to a school that was mostly white and our black friends there went through things like this. They talked about being bullied for having white friends and adults in their life telling them they shouldn’t play with us. I feel very sad about it looking back. We weren’t even old enough to really understand what race is, and these ideas of a divide between us were brought to our attention at a very young age. I think their adults probably were coming from a place of wanting to protect them so I can’t fault them for doing what they thought was helpful but it is sad because to us they weren’t an “other”, they were our friends.

It's called programming, divide and conquer! There is a group that do not work for our holy Father in heaven and divide us by any means possible, newest is, mask and no mask, Politics, right and left! If you believe the Bible God flooded the earth and only Noah and his family survived! Doesn't that mean we are all related? Darwin created race with origin of species, it's not a mistake, it's intentional false teaching to create division. What Christians fail to see is that Satan has followers too and they live amoungst us, they infiltrate a group and help create division when their only objective is division, not the betterment of a group! I just heard this Lady say it, Don't go along with culture, Go along with the word of God! We live in a world of lies, the media is a weapon of mass destruction! Here is one lie you all believe, African American! There is a you tuber that tried to find his roots in Africa, only to find that it appears he is native American! God Bless.

Wow, I had somewhat of a similar "conversion" as her - in terms of both MAGA and BLM. I will address the latter. During the height of BLM protests in 2020 I was venting to God about racial injustice. Clear as day I heard "You are not always going to agree with everyone." That shut me up quick, because along with that voice came sort of a vision/revelation that showed me exactly what He meant. BLM was standing with other groups that have ungodly practices that I do not agree with. Was I going to stand with them too on that side? Of course not! The ONLY banner that I am supposed to stand for and fight for is that of the Kingdom of God. Jesus said if I be lifted, I'll draw men unto me. My focus should be on lifting Jesus up so that He can bring us all under His banner.

I think what changed my mind about BLM was realizing that its leaders own multiple million dollars mansions with the money they make from this organization, which focus is supposed to be helping and liberating poor black communities! The name of the organization makes it near impossible to criticize, because yes obviously black lives matter!! However that organization is corrupt and self-serving.

Incredible episode, I didn’t realize God was really helping me with bitterness I had against the rich in Santa Monica & towards white people that stayed & was taking root since middle school & didn’t know til my brother noticed it & told me in 2020. So glad the Lord helped me in this area because I could’ve gone that route by following the culture in CRT. Love this conversation & what a small world that Monique lived in the same neighborhood I grew up my whole life! Wasn’t born when the riots happened but as a Hispanic woman I had some similarities. I had a incredible 5th grade teacher Mrs. Binns, white lady who really treated everyone well unless you misbehaved of course. So glad that I know she never looked down at her students & encourage my mother to enroll my brother & I in better schools after Elementary. I’m glad to have friends from different ethnicities & God really has opened not just my eyes but also the eyes of some of my friends. I hope that those I went to Vanguard University with that are following the CRT or the Social Justice lense that the Lord heals them, helps them forgive, & lift off the darkness that is following the culture than God’s word as Sister Monique mentioned. I notice this has been hitting a lot in young people. Thank you for having conversations like this that churches don’t talk much on but is needed. God bless you brother Beckett & sister Monique & your ministries

Not all the students on campus are like this, just this particular group of kids. My daughter has lots of other friends of every ethnicity and they don’t care at all. I left my black church (mostly affluent folks with graduate degrees and $60K cars) when the pastor listed "the 3 biggest threats to the Christian church." The first two were non controversial - but the third one, which he said was the BIGGEST problem was - AND I QUOTE - "Donald Trump supporters." This was on a Zoom call. I hung up the phone and not only ended my membership in that church, but I got on my knees and wept many tears, renouncing any part I'd ever had in that kind of thinking in the name of Jesus. Bear in mind also that black churches are recruited by one political party in particular (I think you know who I'm talking about) to carry out all manner of evil in black neighborhoods. This opens up a whole can of malodorous yet highly relevant worms, but we have to look at why, for example, certain political candidates routinely show up at black churches and get an endorsement from the pastor during services. Wait, aren't you tax exempt?? A true walk with Jesus cannot include perpetual anger at the nebulous "white man," support for abortion, presumptive victimhood and what not. You follow Jesus or you don't. Great interview, Becket!!

I not only agree 100%, I’ll give a little of my story and point to other “issues”. The VERY large church I attended did frequently (enough) recognize candidates from a certain party during services. Not a lot of pushing for that particular party but “enough”. I was ALWAYS bothered by it. My final straw was last year, what I call the summer of fire riots. In short, through Zoom and other social outlets, I saw what I would call the real, the true attitude towards the gospel and then the allegiance to a liberal mindset. I had enough. The fact that most predominantly black churches LOOK THE OTHER WAY concerning abortion, the already TOO late push against gay marriage (which Obama joyously celebrated) and NOW, one party’s agenda (executive order signed) to blur the sexes with transgenderism is unbelievable. TRULY UNBELIEVABLE. I am black and of all the family, friends and casual faces (black Christians) that I know, the number that make these Anti God policies central or relevant in how they vote is about 10. That would include myself, my wife, son & daughter. Yeah, Satan has an agenda and he’ keeps black people (CHRISTIAN AND NON) focused on race/racism. Truly cunning. btw, the church I left was mostly affluent also. Bless you.

@@tatyanakol Yeah, I have brought up the issue of abortion (THE MORAL ISSUE OF THE DAY) many times to family and other black Christians. The consistent response is to minimize the action and to change the subject. It comes down to the fact that (certainly black Christians) many have “personalized” the whole issue of Democrat, Republican. Black Christians “FEEL”, “BELIEVE” Republicans don’t like black folks. And essentially, they arrive at this conclusion (unknowingly) because they DON’T see Republicans slobbering all over them with victimization comments and lies. Recorded in L.A. (the 'city of angels'). This band was interracial; half-black, half-white: The Buddy Miles Band, and "We've Got To Live Together". This was from 1970. Buddy had recorded it first with Jimi Hendrix earlier that year with an all-Black band ('The Band Of Gypsies'), and then he re-recorded later that year with an interracial band, with my late brother, Charles, on guitar and backup vocals. At that time, I was at a boarding school in New Hampshire with Judy Collins' kid sister. Also, at that time, big sister Judy had a top 20 hit with her version of 'Amazing Grace'. Soon after, at Jimi's funeral, the Rev. Pat Wright sang-'What A Friend We Have In Jesus'. CRT is among the many things that a long time ago, St. Paul called-'worldly wisdom'-but foolishness compared to Christ. Jesus is the answer for all peoples. Let the angels sing of it!

Thank you Monique for your valuable insight that leads us back to the Scriptures and Jesus as our example. For everything if we know Jesus we return to that and be a light. Thank you Becket for having Monique. This was a great interview that captured a lot of what we are still living through. I want to add that I live in suburban Phila. and have been working in a school district of 14 schools for 8 years as a Personal care assistant for students and as a district sub went from school to school. Now PT in the lunch room and on the recess lot. I am happy to say the school I am working in is almost 50-50 between color( black / brown) & white and these children interact with each other and do get along and little if any separation. This 50- 50 school is the exception yet I see how it has made the children get along and have friends of all colors. This school the kids are respectful and it is a beautiful thing that we need more of.

Everybody Hates Chris, that’s so Raven, keenan and kel, Cory in the House, cousin Skeeter, keeke Palmer was the main character as a fashion intern on Nickelodeon Wizards of Waverly place, George Lopez, The Brothers García… I know probably some of you don’t know the shows I was a 2000s kid and there was a lot of color representation growing up and I am Mexican-American so it’s just weird that people especially the Genzie kids now say that everyone is racist and this and that when in my experience and seeing what I watch growing up in the main stream was quite the opposite…

She is correct, there is no healing outside of Christ. Also, we are all responsible for our own sins, not other people's sin, so I am not born guilty or a victim based on my skin color. We each are just as guilty as everyone else, all, like Paul, can call ourselves the Chief of Sinners, and that is why we all need Forgiveness by our Savior and all must forgive everyone as well. Sin is not a skin problem, it is a heart problem and a result of the Fall. We need to all repent and be Born again. And once we are Saved, we are all One in Christ.

Monique gives an honest and fresh appraisal from a place of deep experience and intellectual balance. A common theme I'm finding across many current issues is summed up by Monique at the end if her interview: 'Stop going along with culture and start going along with The Word. The Word gives us all we need for life and godliness'

A group of 6 or 7 of us from my church went out to a favorite local Cuban restaurant after services yesterday. One gentleman was an ethnic Jew born and raised in Brooklyn who wound up living in Saudi Arabia and converting to Islam. By God’s grace, when he was on the verge of joining an Islamist terrorist camp, he experienced a conversion to Christianity. Praise God! At some point in the conversation I realized he was sharing his testimony, but I didn’t hear everything so I asked him probably a dozen times to repeat what he was saying. I had a very hard time tracking because of the acoustics, but didn’t want to be rude and ignore him as he shared some pretty intimate, personal revelations. I was pretty rattled by the end of our meal because I felt like there was a certain bitterness he was hanging onto directed toward whites. This is hard for me because I look as white as they come, yet my own beloved grandmother was the daughter of a half black mother whose own mother was a former slave. I even named my daughter after her. I grew up in Oakland until age 9 and most of my friends were black. My fathers entire family was a rainbow of yellow, beige, brown and black, yet I was harassed more than once for being “white.” My conservative self-made blue collar business owner father could have and occasionally was taken as being black-sometimes by the police-taught me that people with racist views were “just ignorant”. To this day I hate racism in all its expressions-including CRT. He (dad) was the only other Christian in our family of six (besides me) and he never held back expressing his views that a racist was a racist no matter their color, but I find myself at times holding back my own opinion with people like my new friend from church yesterday because I can “feel” their disapproval of me for my whiteness. I sometimes wonder if I’m just being paranoid or a man pleaser, but then I remember Romans 3:23: “we all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” I love Monique and I love you too Becket, my sister and brother in Christ. And I agree 💯 that if everyone loved the way Jesus commands us to love, there would be no racism. Your interviews all bless me. This one was emotionally healing and spiritually encouraging. Thank you. God bless, protect and guide you on in this ministry for many years to come!!

This was a phenomenal conversation. Listening to her feels like I'm listening to a cousin. She should have a public platform. A YT channel or podcast. There aren't enough voices in the black community saying this. She's absolutely right about the church division. I grew up in the black church. I left in adulthood and will never return. I joined Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale (though I since moved away) and I would never want to return to a single race church community. As soon as I drove onto the church campus I was overwhelmed with love and hospitality. There's a lot of toxic theology in the black church. Instead of subscribing to it I would encourage other churches to do outreach and connect with them. Just show relentless love.

And recognizing sin as sin and still following Christ, ‘speaking the truth in love’. As an African American growing up in public schools in Upper East Side largely Jewish community and living in East Harlem NYC, a largely Puerto Rican community 1960’s and 70’s attending a COGIC Pentecostal church formed with my family and and small group of families in the South Bronx NYC. I came to the point of recognizing that sin is sin, repentance and forgiveness are basic tenets of the faith. Race is jive pop psychology and what a savior that faith in Christ presents to the world despite the remnant numbers we represent. I grew up sharing Christ and his salvation to Jews and people of other faiths and races regularly. We can’t change the definition of sin and escape the strait and narrow lonely road of salvation. It is opposed and the only way to God. I appreciate all that you two ministers of Christ are doing so decisively and diligently in this world to lift him up before men. God bless you both and the ministries. I enjoyed the presentation.

I want to share a personal story and I'm going to aim for brevity. (Sorry, it did end up being long). I am close in age to Becket and grew up in Sioux Falls (SoDak), very cold in winter, rather isolated place back then. We were working poor (though we didn't stay that way, the working-YES ;-) . I moved to Houston w/husband in early 00s. I was SAHM. I cruised the local library to find other moms who'd join a weekly 'playgroup' in our home. I met 'Steph' and we became very close friends. She is black and grew up in an affluent area near where Becket grew up. Her parents both had college degrees. She grew up with more white folks around her than not. We were so close we had holidays in each other's homes, I was with her when each of her good parents was laid to rest. We grew apart when we disagreed over a person who became President. By then she'd moved to Atlanta and honestly-she'd become someone I didn't like much anymore (and maybe she'd say the same about me). There was never any drama, just a quiet death of the closeness. I believe we still both wish each other well (and pray for each other, maybe). The point of this story is a memory that bugged me and I never did tell Steph directly (and I guess I probably never will). We went to a park to do recognizance, scout out location for a joint b-day party we were planning. There was a small family hanging out on a picnic table. We were walking toward them (to look at the lay-out). Steph got all weird, said to me "No no, uh-uh, let's go the other way". I asked her why. She said those people were the kind who didn't like black people, that she just knew it. Y'all they were just looking at us. They didn't make a face. They weren't thinking anything bad. Maybe they thought it was cool to see us together (and Steph is exceptionally beautiful, so there's that too). We should NOT assume the worst about people. We often find what we're looking for-if we're a hammer, we're looking for that nail (plz forgive the cliché).

I can relate to this a bit. I am a bit younger and I used to have many close black friends. Over the years as they got more into these movements they began to get really snarky and look down on me. I tried my best to be a perfect ally for them but constantly felt like I was walking on eggshells and they were looking for something to fault me for. It became so intense I stopped reaching out as much and most of them never contacted me again. Believe me when I say I became incredibly sensitive to any potential issues and am openly anti-racist. I began to realize it didn’t matter to them, the fault was in my skin color. As they now say, every single white person is born racist, so there was nothing I could do that would be good enough for people who believe that.

Awesome interview brother Becket! Monique is spot on in that our Lord's Church need & aught not look to the world for solutions & answers in secular theories or ideologies. Moreover, your conversation is the more valuable in that it's devoid of the polarizing & politically-partisan RIGHT-wing ideological rhetoric which today has crept into "American Christianity" when this topic (CRT) & others are addressed.

I don’t know much about the origin of CRT but I’ve been studying Critical Pedagogy in grad school and reading Paulo Freire (Marxist educator from Brazil). I’m Brazilian-American and often hear about Freire’s negative impact on Brazilian education and wonder how much critical pedagogy is going to affect education here in the US, as well.
