Money comes and goes but debt sticks to you and never goes away until you actually do something to scrape it all off. That's why the employer match doesn't matter in the long run (and can only delay the process of getting the debt off of you), and it's why attacking high interest debts first doesn't matter (since all those other debts are still on top of you - makes more sense to lighten the load before attacking the final hurdle). Debt is to your finances like depression is to your mental well-being.

As much as I agree with most of what Dave says, I 100% disagree with this notion that you must ignore free 401k matching from your employer. Compounding growth needs time. That's why it's called COMPOUNDING. If you're over 30 you are missing out on VERY precious time for that compounding growth to kick in. You can get the match and still have this agressive mindset Dave speaks of. I'd take the match and agressively tackle the debt via the snowball method.
@Sashowindfeather
@Sashowindfeather 2 жыл бұрын

The type of person that calls this show can’t afford to think mathematically since they have been living emotionally thus in so much debt. Dave approached this by attacking emotions and using this gazelle intensity. You and I can possibly handle debt well and we aren’t the callers so compounding interest makes sense for our types.

I'd say if you are under 30, go after the debt 100%. Over 30, you can't turn down the free money. You only have so many years for compound interest to really kick in.. Especially if you are starting from zero..
@jodylarson4697
@jodylarson4697 2 жыл бұрын
I figure you don't mean 30 literally, but in any case, it depends on how bad the debt is, and the interest rate on it. If somebody's paying 16% interest on debt, it's hard to justify not throwing everything on that debt to get it cleared up. Otherwise it will still be eating at you down the road whether you took the match or not.
@TreuNorthExplorers
@TreuNorthExplorers 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Dave’s talking about something bigger than the match. The “free money” from the match when you try and retire with several hundred thousands of dollars in debt won’t look very freeing later in life. What Dave is talking about here is the habit of NOT going into debt and “roaring at the moon” drive to get out of debt. If one can’t figure this out, no matter how much they make, you won’t be financially successful.
@Lon1001
@Lon1001 2 жыл бұрын
Compounding interest is already happening on your investments and your debts alike, it doesn't kick in at some point down the road. Debt works against you now and it compounds to work that much harder against you in the future at whatever the interest rate, the sooner you focus all your intentions on getting rid of the debt the sooner you can maximize the compounding growth of your total portfolio.

I would argue the difference between people who build wealth vs don't is mindset. Sort of like what Dave was arguing. People with a investor mindset do well. Those with a consumer mindset do not. Once you start looking at value instead of price the financial world opens up to you. Otherwise you are chasing your tail and the latest trend which means you will always be a step behind.

My work pension scheme had a max per year, thus limiting " catch up later" and, with private pensions, or add-on pensions, lost years of investment in the fund make a difference when it comes to how much pension you get at retirement. You can't catch up later. It is worth sacrificing a bit of extra interest on your debt catds, to keep paying your pension contributions up to the match level !

When Dave says build 'Wealth' . How do you divine wealth as having money is infinite and you are not going to take it with you, are you. I believe happiness is more than having money in the bank. You might spend a lot on holidays, nice home, going out etc. If your happy and healthy doing that what is the problem, within reason of course. He continues raves on about investing, that is if you have any money to invest but then you are up against time, that could be up for you anytime. If your happy with life carry on.

Debt is like depression... if you struggle through it to achieve some goal, even if you accomplish it sooner than you could have does it really make your life better? I think the employer match can be a nice carrot to help motivate you to shed your debts so you can start putting your money to work optimally.

This is at the top of the list of ways that Dave is wrong. If you can walk and chew gum at the same time you can pay down your debt while simultaneously contributing to your 401k. Not taking the match is asking your employer “may I please have a pay cut?”.

This is the one part of the baby steps I have a problem with. A 401k with a match gets you extra tax free money from your employer and saves you taxes on the money you contribute. Not opting for it is leaving money on the table. What's the difference between that and turning down overtime ?

@@jonathanschober1032 Yes you can. You pay a 10% penalty plus ordinary tax if you withdraw it early. It may still be worth it if you're paying down debt. You can also borrow against a 401k with no penalty to pay off other debt. Yes, you'd still be paying interest, but the interest you're paying is to yourself.

This is a time when Dave's advice is dumb. Always get your match unless your life depends on it. If your interest rate is low enough, it may make sense to put some extra in retirement beyond that and put the rest on debt.
