More or less, Aegon designed it not to be comfortable. It’s a reminder to all, particularly future rulers to always be on their toes… the ruler should never slouch, recline, or be at ease at least publicly. The moment you do, you show weakness to your court, and your enemies.

In Fire and Blood, it's simply stated that when the Throne cuts whoever sits in it, it means the Throne has rejected them, and they will not sit on the Iron Throne as ruler for long.

here's a better way of explaining it, in the books the throne cuts kings that is deems unfit for the throne

My theory is that the throne is not something for you to lounge on. It is made from swords so even when you sit on it, you have to be cautious. I think proper kings should always be vigilant even when you are sitting on the throne. A king should always be cautious of his surroundings. So the the ones who are not are "unworthy" of being king and the throne will hurt them, or in Viserys's case, kill them. Figuratively and literally

I mean, the long and short of it could simply be that the throne wasn’t meant to lounge on. Being the king means being responsible for the entire kingdom and to represent it as the task it is, the throne itself is as uncomfortable as can be. A throne of still sharp swords that cut you if you aren’t careful, quite like the kingdom. One wrong move can end up with you harming yourself. Thus, Kings who lounge on the throne and forget that it’s meant to represent duty and responsibility, they begin to cut themselves on it. They become careless and fail to rule in a responsible manner. Or, y’know, magic, but I’d guess that it’s the former more so than the latter

As mentioned in S1E2, Viserys didn't build the model of the city. The stone masons did it at his request.

that chair was never meant to be sat on it was meant as a reminder to those who tried to over throw the monarch.

Since he is king, why not replace the throne with feathers. Many would like to sit on the Sofa Throne. So soft and comfy. You can even sleep on it.

I love how he keeps cutting himself but he keeps sitting on it, like duh I'd be like OK I'm moving my lazy boy in front of the it, and we will now be using the iron throne for decorative purposes only lol.

(Spoilers? not sure...)Just my theory. He is indeed a great king but he is starting to do bad decisions so the throne is slowly "punishing" him. Eventually he will be surrounded by Hightowers because he is forgetting his family... and Targaryens will probably loose a lot. In GoT when families get unified and only trusting each other they get stronger. Also, not getting too feminist but ignoring women from family with their right to seat in the throne weakens family influence. Most of GoT women are very strong and smart. They know how to rule. Starks, Targaryens, Tyrells, Lannisters... a lot of big houses had (sometimes evil I know) very organise and strong women... ignoring them is also a weakness. (With exception of) house Martel, they really cared for family with or without tittle and it was their strength. House Tyrell also had Olenna and that says it all. After time the swords would dull too. I understand the meaning of the throne injuring unworthy kings or after a bad choice cutting them but unless polished and sharpened a sword will dull after hundreds or more years.

I’m surprised everyone including this channel hasn’t mentioned maybe the obvious maybe it’s medical like diabetes which can cause wounds not to heal and loss of feeling in extremities. Hence always cutting himself or being clumsy dropping the dragon sculpture or cutting himself and not feeling till afterwards

I'm not really a fan of GOT, but I have two questions: 1) Was the Iron Throne inspired by the fable of the Sword of Damocles? It really reminds me of that. 2) Why didn't Viserys or any ruler just wear full armour while sitting on the throne? Basically showing you're worthy by being smart enough to bend the rules.

Maybe the writers will develop a bit that shows the Hightowers seeing the excess of needless swords in the throne room as a danger to their heirs and decide to have the majority removed. Or maybe the Mad King himself had quite a few removed to bolster his army's need for weapons and armaments during Robert's Rebellion. Still doesn't fully fix the way the GoT showrunners screwed it up, but it could put a band-aid on it at least.

From a practical point of view, it's bc the throne is made of sharp metal. From symbolic point of view, it's a sign of rejection for being unworthy. But then Geoffrey sat comfortably on it and didn't get cut in the show, so....

If you watch House of Dragons carefully. His finger is slowly getting infected, soon but likely will kill him. He's already lost his movement for it, plus it has darkened.

i think you forgot the part that the swords which are used are enemy swords, which were crushed brutally , i think the hate of those people are still inside the swords (obviously swords are used kill enemy and you want him to die) so i think it's not throne which is cursed , some swords might used in that might be acting as curse. this is possible because no matter who seats on it they are doomed to go crazy (they have to seat on it)

Maegor wasn't killed by the throne since one blade pierced his neck area and his wrists were slit , thats not being cut that's being killed and suicide is impossible since it's maegor . And Maegor the cruel as people call him was a great king and the maestors just have painted him in a bad light cause he destroyed the faith's influence in his time . That's why the chair wouldn't knick him and I don't remember him being ever knicked tbh

We see Deamon sits on the throne before the clip where Viserys cut himself. Only reason why we see Deamon sitting there is because we later will be told that he infected the thrones blades. Elsewise its irrelevant to show it.
