I was of the mindset that “there must always be a Stark in Winterfell” had to do with a supernatural protection. While the reasons may have been lost through the ages and all that remains is the phrase, I believe that if there is no Stark in Winterfell, it becomes vulnerable to the Night King. Once Bran and Rickon leave, there is no longer a Stark in Winterfell, and that triggers the sequence of events that lead to its impending downfall. 🤷🏻‍♀️ guess we’ll find out soon enough!

Or since the knight King was a Stark. Perhaps it had to be a stark to kill him. Meaning there always had to be a stark in Winterfell.

A lot of great information here, thank you! A couple of thoughts (specifically within the context of the show) The first time in the show we see the Army of the Dead marching (the time when Sam is hiding behind a rock) is Season 2 episode 10. What sticks out to me is this the same episode in which Bran, Rickon, Hodor, and Osha emerge from "hiding in the crypts" of Winterfell and begin their journey north. The result is that this is now the first time in the context of the show where technically all Starks are gone from Winterfell. "There must always be a Stark in Winterfell". This tells me that the phrase "There must always be a Stark in Winterfell" is actually one of the conditions of the truce made between men and the others/walkers. The Walkers then take this as the sign that it's time to put their plan into effect.

There is another time that the phrase "there must always be a Stark in Winterfell", it is in season 1 episode 8 "The Pointy End". It is said when Rob is about to leave south with the banner men for his father and he tells Bran this. Just thought that would be interesting to know

Reading the books, I taken the saying totally different. Like magic on the wall, and winterfell build by the same person. The binding contract or magic would be broken if none of the bloodline left the castle. So the walkers would be free to come south.

The second time this phrase was used in the show is when Rob visited Bran in his chambers before he rode off south with his bannermen in Season 1 E 8. And after Rob said the phrase he instructed Bran to stay within the castle walls

Bloodraven was not disappointed when Bran called out Neds name. The look he gave was one of sadness and not the only time he gets the look. Bloodraven already knows everything that did and will happen. The reason he is sad is that he knows what these actions will cause. the mistakes that were made that led to the time-loop that will trap Bran and the Starks forever, knowing that nothing he says or does will change it.

I think the phrase Stark in Winterfell is also related to how the mountain clans in the North and possibly the ancient Firstmen call their leader. The Wull, the Liddle, the Flint, etc.

I like to think that not everything is shrouded in prophecy. To me, it just highlights how respected and well intentioned the Starks are at heart.

I always felt it was ment for when winter comes , “The Night King” . There has to be a Stark in Winterfell. Because it must only be a Stark that can defeat the Night King.

Didn’t Robb say it to Bran when he had to leave Winterfell. He said “There must always be a Stark in Winterfell” am I wrong?

The US military does the same thing, all but one son can go to war. So the bloodline does not end in one war. My grandfather was not able to fight in WW2, Korea or Vietnam because all of his brother where already enlisted in the military. The reason they do this is because the male carries the family’s last name, if he would die then the blood line would go extinct.

I think there must be always a Stark in Winterfell to keep the dead in the crypts. I think Theon is fullfilling that part, but he is not truly a Stark, hence the ghost of Winterfell which I think is Theon (either being warged -by a Stark, probably Bran-, or developing a split personality)

Totally blew my mind on the book listed "The (k)nights are dark and full of terror!!! and I just hear Melasandra repeating it over and over and she just get's "visions" or w/e but maybe she her interpretations are a little off as we know how well it went with Stannis. I believe she does hear "whispers" but her blinding faith doesn't make her try to figure out what the words she knows actually means. I think that she is human and fills in the "gaps" of her faith with her own interpretations and experiences and since she said she had a bad childhood she is very numb to pain and likely did not have much guidance.

I've heard theories that when the Wight Walkers were around thousands of years ago, they weren't actually physically defeated and driven off. Rather that some kind of deal was made with them. We can be fairly sure that Starks were involved, probably even that the Night King IS a Stark. So the idea of such a deal involving the Starks is a pretty good bet. So maybe that deal includes that agreement that there is always a Stark in Winterfell. It's not some code for anything, but quite literally a Stark physically being in Winterfell.

My theory on that saying is wrapped in much thicker tin foil. There must always be a Stark in Winterfell because when the Night King (or the Great Other) comes south, he'll want to raise the dead in the Crypts of Winterfell. If there is no Stark in Winterfell, he'll be able to do so, and with so many of the great kings of Winter this army would be nigh unbeatable. However, if there IS a Stark in Winterfell, the dead will rise, but they'll be under the command of the Stark in Winterfell, and they'll fight against the Other's army of the dead.

Ned chanted a prayer before dying. Calling that prayer magic That magic rested his soul in the catacombs of winterhold. The swords are there to keep them there. The spirits will fight at winterfell and that imo is what arya is running from. Dead decapitated daddy

Here's some thoughts not really necessary for your point, but that emphasize it: The Maiden Girl's "Name-Day Gown" is GRRM's euphemism for today's "Birthday Suit" or "Naked as a Jaybird" phrases. Thus, if a pretty girl could walk down the main street in town with nothing on and nothing to fear, it meant that the Starks enforced the laws, which brought peace. And, as seen in the fact that travelers could find many good places to stay with sufficient food, etc., meant that the Starks also brought prosperity to their people and lands. Wo0dy

I believe When Theon said “Prince” he was referring to himself as Prince of the Iron Born.

I feel sad for Theon. His father was an ass. No son or daughter deserve that treatment. It was hos Father's treatment that made him do things.

Reading the books a few things are mentioned quite frequently 1 being The Honor of Ned Stark, it's mentioned numerous times and as we found out Ned never broke his honor as Jon Snow wasn't his kid. It's also mentioned that a Stark must always be in Winterfell, and it's also mentioned on at least a few occasions that 50 good men could defend Winterfell against an army. So I think all that really means is that a war is coming to Winterfell (white walkers) and a Stark will lead the people to victory.

Is there a rough date for when Melissandre burned down her first godswood? As far as I can tell this would be the timeline from the Others POV. most of it we already know Pre-GoT:Mel breaks the pact Prologue: Others send an emissary group to chat with Lord Stark, or maybe the Lord Commander. Instead they find Ser Royce, and after that went bad they decide that it's wartime Fist: the Others find what they presume to be a preliminary first strike by the Nights Watch, so they go all out and destroy them(scarier still is if that wasn't their full strength at the time) March to the Wall: the Others rout the Watch, and one of theirs is slain, and after that they seem to have backed off until Hardhome, but I haven't gotten that far yet so I don't know details of the attack. But I'm guessing it was either to collect soldiers, or take a good strike opportunity while it was there BUT.....if Mel wasn't responsible, since Stannis may not have hired her yet, then who? The Oldtown Red Priests? Thoros?

God I forgot how impossibly intricate and amazing the.books are. I reeeeeealy wish the books (any edition!!) had given about 2 inches of space lined at the bottom of each page. Cause in reading, I was seeing connections and remembering people and ideas. 3 lines at the bottom would surely beat any of my softcover book ed . where Damn near every page was scribbled and highlighted to bits. I feel sorry for Martin having to move about all these separate strands of people, myths and truths and continue to weave each tiny detail into the story to flow along expertly. But he has a legion of ready volunteers on the net to help with outer strands. He seems to be a fan of the Checkohv's Gun Theory in writing

This would kind of explain the night kings weird behavior towards the starks. He could habe killed them multiple times, but he took his time, making sure to make prolonged eye contact, slow and determined steps. His behavior towards each of them was drastically different than his behavior towards Theon and others close to the family. He was usually really quick, decisive and calculating... unless it came to a stark or Jon...

I think that Bael's son could not have become the Night King, because it is said that his son, new Lord Stark of Winterfell, was later killed and skinned alive by the Boltons. Or maybe it's just made-up, official version of the history to cover up that whole thing and then this theory could be true. Great video as always!

Major loophole in GOT that I noticed. In several references to the last time the night King attacked, he was defeated with the use of a valerian steel weapon. When Arya killed him be burst like shattered glass. I would assume that this happened to him in his prior defeats. Then why does he keep coming back? I would assume that either there is more than one night King or what was killed was a high-ranking white that answers to the real night King. On the even more bazar side I would point out that it is possible that someone needs to take his place as the night King, perhaps someone with an evil streak like Cereci or perhaps the one that killed the last night King. I noticed that in the story that a lot of power has shifted towards women; Iron Islands, Iron Throne, Daenerys, and I got a feeling that John Snow is going south leaving Sansa in Winterfell and at some point to become the next Warden of the North. So it is not much of a leap for the next night King may be a night Queen.
