How to shrink and minimize the appearance of pores is a common question Dr. Karam gets asked. Today, Dr. Karam is directly addressing this issue, and sharing some of his key tips to minimizing your pores and having more even, healthy skin in general. When talking about shrinking pores, it comes down to the oil glands. Oil glands secrete oil, which is a method your body uses to hydrate the skin. When the pores are dilated, or enlarged and more visible, it is because they are clogged. When someone has clogged pores, they automatically feel the need to go get an in-office treatment done, like a chemical peel, a laser treatment, or a facial. What Dr. Karam is sharing today, though, is that consistently taking thorough care of your skin will give you better and longer lasting results than any in-office treatment.

I used to have oily skin I my teens, and I read up on how to clean it and one day my visible pore starts shrinking invisibly. I started using retinol in my 30s and exfoliating. I’m now in my 50s, still doing it and my sister and friends are complimenting on my very smooth skin. People doesn’t believe I’m in my real age.

Dr Karam, I've watched many of your videos. They're fantastic. You explain this complicated area very clearly, and sensitively too. I think I have syringomas - there isn't much information about them on the internet and nothing I could find on KZfaq. They are small bumps, skin-coloured and seem to be in a few clusters. I would love it if you could advise on how to reduce/cure them safely.

Great Video and Life Message! Thank you so much ! I do have a quick question… I recently developed cellulitis from an oral surgery on my front tooth that ended up destroying my lip tissue, all of the muscle and bone up to my sinus. At this time my lip has lost enough volume I had to wear I still haven’t have a lip lip or filler, but what would be my best choice to help restore this tissue while actively trying to develop my own physical therapy to keep my John bone muscle as this resulted in 20 procedures and I’m still not completely healed. I’ve been doing face yoga, however when I press on my skin, too hard, I’ve developed petechiae, I have seen several doctors about this and we’re still trying to figure out the route cause.. would you be open to a consult on my case? I’ll book online if so. Thank you for your information! Love&light from California ❤❤

Can someone help me? I use a lactic acid exfoliator once a week. I also NEED moisturizer no matter what products I use because I have very dry skin. I’m an esthetician so I feel like I should know this stuff, BUT we do learn different things and I do know that over exfoliating is BAD for your skin. I’m wondering is it okay to use Retinol the day or two after I use my exfoliant and is it okay to put moisturizer on AFTER using my Retinol cream? I would love a professionals opinion. ❤

Will Accutane shrink your pores permanently?? The reason I ask is that I was on one full Accutane course in the early 2000s for about 9 months. My facial pores on the forehead and nose really shrank to almost nothing! I never had any visible pores on my cheeks and other dry zones, just the T-zone! It worked for me.

As pores serve a purpose, they can't be shrinked but can be flattened by a laser or similar technology. They'll still look as noticeable, but flatter. The trouble is, the nose pores will get more clogged when there's dead skin about to drop off and will become greasy due to the pH balance: a side effect of this procedure. Cleansing is very important and needs to be assessed so not to risk acne. Another great video and always look forward to watching them.

Doctor,does tretinoin work for pore size reduction?
@dramirkaram
@dramirkaram 11 ай бұрын
Tretinoin works by promoting exfoliation and increasing cell turnover, which helps to unclog pores and remove debris, excess oil, and dead skin cells. By keeping pores clear and preventing them from becoming blocked, tretinoin can make pores appear smaller and less noticeable.

Most people with dilated sebaceous filaments (what these really are, not large pores) have a naturally oily skin type and sometimes some underlying hormonal issue that causes excess sebum production. These start appearing in the teen years, not in old people, though I imagine thinning aging skin makes things look worse. I've noticed people with naturally thick, oily, olive-undertoned skin (regardless of color depth) tend to have these visibly large pores more often than people with other complexions. In either case, these large pores are not truly treatable because the sebum hyperproduction will never cease (or at least not until one is past mid-age?). When the sebum plug is removed, the stimulated sebaceous gland is still active and just makes another plug. The plug comes from the inside, not from what the person puts on their skin, though comedogenic products will exacerbate things. It's genetic and hormonal, not from eating oily foods or not drinking enough water, either. Accutane will help, but only while one takes it. The genetic or hormonal oily skin will return when one stops the Accutane. The only thing one can do is avoid comedogenic products, exfoliate, hydrate the skin, use actives, etc., to keep things looking as presentable as possible, but these dilated sebaceous filaments will never ever truly shrink or go away. Peels exfoliate, so they can be helpful. Not a cure, not a massive improvement, but helpful. Just like dermabrasion can be helpful. I'm confused about why Dr. Karam doesn't think they are useful.

I love your videos and agree with most things. But... I've been following all these tips for 30 years now, including retinol and sunscreen religiously, and my pores are worse now than ever. They are "clean" thanks to salicylic acid, retinol and other actives, but they are still enlarged. I've used high-end and drugstore skincare, no difference (just my bank balance that suffers). I also do chemical peels which help diminish them temporarily but nothing reduces the size in the long term. I think age and genetics are a BIG factor which you haven't touched on enough. Does microneedling not help with texture? You never mentioned it.

It's also not advised to do actives all at once, you may be irritating your skin, go simple and pick a retinol to use on most days and salicilic acid to exfoliate on others and use a hydrating serum that night. Also drink a lot of water, not drinking alcohol, cutting down caffeine & dairy & refined sugars, and regular exercise have made this biggest difference for me. Yes your genetics play a factor but the health of our skin is mainly the result of our long term habits. Our skin tells us a lot about our inner health. My skin has changed drastically after implementing a routine inside and out. Yes it's a lot but I feel my health is worth it! I hope this helps!

Hi Ashley. Thank you for your reply. I'm doing all of the above except for microneedling, which I'm starting next month. I agree, it's a process, but it's not only down to good skincare, which is my point. If it was, I wouldn't have a pore in sight. Genetics and aging definitely play a role x

My skin is combo, sensitive, and acne prone, and I used to struggle with oily skin because it was actually dehydrated as I used to think oil stripping was the solution. I recently got into K-Beauty products that focused on hydration and a two step oil cleansing method, with Korean sunscreen (which is more advanced than what FDA approves in the US). This has shrunk my pores naturally as the sebum production lessened with proper cleansing and hydrating. Also, I stopped using any products that contained alcohol, which included some of my salicylic acid toners that were actually over drying my skin.

Thank you & this episode made a lot of sense & I ordered your product line. I do have sensitive skin so exfoliating product will be 1x every 10 days otherwise I will look like a lobster 😊

How about a Hydrafacial? It’s like vacuuming your pores.

I've done that. It works. I started dermaplaning. Shaving my face dry. Enlarged pores due to dry skin makes sense.

Hi Doc, hope you could respond to this. As a freelancer working from home, I often get a lack of sleep. I only get an average of 5-6 hours of sleep daily and I know stress is a contributing factor for enlarged pores. What do you recommend?

If anyone else told me to add an oil to combat my oily skin, I neva would have believed them. But since it's you, I'll take it into consideration. 😂 I think it'd be great if you formulated body cleanser and lotions!

@cheekymonkeygirl3378 LaRoche-Posay’s ‘Anthelios’ sunscreen applies like a serum- very light and very liquid. I usually wear Wander Beauty’s Wanderlust powder foundation over it and it works perfectly together.
