Remember the 1989 movie The Wizard? You know, the one with the Power Glove in it, and Super Mario Bros. 3? Well, Jeff Hansen's life is even more incredible than that film (although it doesn't feature Fred Savage or that actor who was supposed to be Luke Skywalker but lost out to Mark Hamill).

I was a quarter finalist at the 1990 Powerfest in Cincinnati. Got to stand up on stage and show off my skills. Unfortunately I sucked at Rad Racer and lost too much time finishing it. Still ranks as one of the best experiences of my childhood.

same thing here man. they sprung it on me right on stage and I didn't even know the buttons. LOL. I did, however, do some funny on-stage stuff with mario bros, and probably had a score at least in the 500'000's in tetris. my failure was too much time in mario and no skill in radracer of course. i've been known to get solid 100% of time tetrisses from level 1 well into level 19-20~ish or so... scoring in the 600,000's maybe 700'000 or more. that was back when I was still 9! id love to find out who my portland-based opponent up there was, to see who went on.

Nintendo Life: It is a true inspiring story. Thank you so much for The 1990 Nintendo World Champion: Jeff Hansen for sharing his journey. Although he doesn't compete since 1993. It took 3 years to have one of the best experiences in a whole Life Time. Few people are proud to tell this kind of stories. I mean, this is how Movies are made or to write a book. Jeff Hansen was the chosen one and this is his testimony. A must see documentary! Salutes from Tijuana., Baja California., Mexico.

It's interesting to note that Nintendo definitely put a lot more time, money and resources behind the 1990 World Championships that it did the most recent ones in 2015 and 2017, which is a bit sad really. As fun as it was, I wish Nintendo had taken the 2015 and 2017 championships as serious as it clearly took it back in the day. I mean, the winner in 2015/2017 should have walked away with a $50,000 car or something. The runners up should have all received cash prizes too, and everyone that even got to the final should have been given free games (maybe the ones used in the competition) and other cool swag. That would be in line with the 1990 championship and adjusted for today, but we got pale intimations when all is said and done, with kinda pathetic prizes and stuff. They were more gimmicks and glorified advertising campaigns cashing in on nostalgia than the truly awesome and deserving World Championships they could have been. Also, why isn't this now a proper regular thing again too? if done right this could be one of the premier yearly game championships that draws in tens of millions of viewers and generates tens of millions of dollars in revenue and prizes and stuff--a page out of modern eSports like Dota 2 and LoL, and the likes of Evo--and it would just be awesome fun to watch. Nintendo obviously doesn't know what it's sitting on here, which is very disappointing and frustrating to me personally.
