There is no bridge from hell to heaven. Once this life comes to an end, it is too late to repent of sin and look to Christ for mercy. In this sermon, R.C. Sproul continues his sermon series in the gospel of Luke by examining one of Jesus’ most sobering parables.
This sermon was preached by R.C. Sproul at Saint Andrew's Chapel in Sanford, Fla. Hear more from his series in the gospel of Luke: • The Gospel of Luke: Se...

If a dead man could talk....Whether you believe in a literal hell or not, this parable exists for a reason. The great chasm seems to reveal that our eternal destinies are fixed. The rich man in this story doesn’t asked to be released nor does he show any repentant behavior.

(Mysteries that are hidden in plain sight) This parable of the rich man and Lazarus, “without a parable did He speak to them” had nothing to do with a hell or eternal punishment. When these mysteries of God’s Word was spoken, Jesus would always leave clues. Who was the man with no name, who had five brothers, who was the man with a name, or what prophecy was fulfilled when the dogs came? These clues make It crystal clear what the message of Jesus was. From the pulpit today most, but not all, teach this parable with this implication. If you don’t believe you will burn in hell in eternal torment, forever like the rich man.

"While they were eating, Jesus took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins". Matthew 26:26-28

This is a great parable and to understand this, one has to go to John's gospel where Jesus on the way to raise another Lazarus from the dead, meets Martha and said to her, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? 27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world."

the revulsion to hell is the reality of Heaven! because no one will be willing to go there, one will have to be casted into hell; once the realization that God exist for those who denied Him on this side of eternity and for us who refused to bow to His will, who acknowledged His existence on this side of eternity. the judgement is a separation from paradise, and this realization of the separation from God can be compared to anguish and torment as if one was on fire: oh LORD GOD have mercy upon our souls on that Great and Terrible Day!

Romans 1 says we all KNOW God exists but suppress this knowledge in unrighteousness “I do not have to prove to you that God exists, because I think you already know it. Your problem is not that you do not know that God exists; your problem is that you despise the God whom you know exists. Your problem is not intellectual; it is moral-you hate God.” ― R.C. Jesus is speaking to only the Pharisees concerning this parable so I would like to know some interesting answers to these questions about this parable: 1) Is the Rich Man a Jew from Israel or is he Gentile? 2) Is Lazarus from Israel or is he Gentile? 3) The Rich Man addresses Abraham as "Father" Abraham addresses the Rich Man as "Son". No relationship is mentioned about Lazarus like this. Are the Rich man and Abraham somehow related? 4) This parable does not say that either the Rich Man nor Lazarus know anything of obedience to the Jewish Law. Then why would Lazarus be saved if he knows nothing about salvation of the Jewish customs? 5) Why is it that the Rich Man has specifically 5 brothers? Why not 3, 6, 8 or any other number of brothers? 6) Why do the 5 brothers of the Rich Man have Moses and the Prophets to refer too, but Lazarus does not and seems to not know anything about Moses and the Prophets? 7) Why is the Rich Man begging to Abraham have Lazarus do favors for him and not ask Almighty God? 8) Why is it Lazarus never speaks or say anything? 9) Why is it in many churches the Rich Man is in hell when Jesus tells them he is in Hades, equivalent to the Hebrew Sheol...either the same as the grave or a place reserved for the dead until the resurrection? 10) Why does Jesus speak of marriage and divorce which has nothing to do with this story just before going into this parable?

Names have symbolic meaning; not every Lazarus in scripture is the same Lazarus (understood to be the brother of Mary and Martha raised from the dead) just as not every Mary in scripture is the same Mary. This story is introduced as a parable and is told as one. The greatest indicator of this being a parable is the fact that the rich man in hell is able to look up to and communicate with those in Heaven. That is not the reality of the two eternal destinations and is only illustrated to bring home the greater point of spiritual reality that Jesus is making in this story. That being another indicator that this is, although deeply profound, a parable because it’s being told by Jesus to highlight a misunderstood/unseen reality of spiritual truths to the Pharisees as He did with other parables.

Hey R.C, love your work! As for this teaching it was not correct. Once you identify who theses 2 characters are typifying in this parable you will understand the true message, which has nothing to do with the after life nor eternal hell. It would be a lot for me to explain verse by verse but here it is in a nutshell: There is only one man who scripturally fits all the descriptions of the "rich man" in this parable. The only one person who "illustrates" all of the symbols and identifying clues given of this rich man is "JUDAH!” But not just Judah as an historical individual, but as a group… That’s all Israel under the headship of Judah. We can definitely prove that all the clues points to Judah being the “rich man”. “Lazarus” is a picture in this parable typifying the “gentiles”. And so we see that God has not "cast off" the Gentiles! We find "Lazarus" [Gk: helpless] begging scraps from a rich man’s table. Will God have mercy on him just as He did the Syro-Phoenician woman and the Centurion? Absolutely! Well guess what, "LAZARUS" IS ELIEZER"! The Greek "Lazarus" is from Lazaros [Heb. HELPLESS]. But in Hebrew "Lazarus" is Elazar or "Eliezer" from el [God] and azar [HELP]! Interestingly God had already planned this whole marvelous plan of bringing in the gentiles into the Kingdom from the time of Abraham. (Eph. 2:13-18). “But now in Christ Jesus ye [gentiles] who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For He is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us [Jews and gentiles]; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both [Jews and gentiles] unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: And came and preached peace to you [gentiles] which were afar off, and to them [Jews] that were nigh. For through Him we both [Jews and gentiles] have access by one Spirit unto the Father.” ...here are supporting scriptures that depicts what Christ was teaching from the parable of Lazzarus and the rich man.... Ephesians 3: 1-9: “ For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power. Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:”

Fear mongering teaching by a calvanist. The word hell is nowhere found in the bible......study it out for yourself, hell is a mistranslation of 4 different words, SHEOL, TATARUS, HADES and GEHENNA. The wages of sin is DEATH.
@MrsNata74
@MrsNata74 11 ай бұрын
That’s right what you said. I was in a church where little kids were indoctrinated with fear and hell. One kid from the church brought another kid to tears in kindergarden, so the parents were called to the principal. Unfortunately most of the churches preach the false teaching of hell. Many Christians are taught that way. The same people who take the Bible literally by neglecting symbols and figurative speech are very creative in changing the meaning of the word death. This is very inconsequent. Death does not mean death for them. Death means everlasting torment. That’s so wrong. The teaching of hell in combination with the possibility of loosing salvation is the worst teaching. You live in constant fear and not in peace. The wages of sin is death and not hell. Some people want a hell and they promote it as biblical.
@4evamobbin534

If the wages of sin is death that’s sounds terrible. To be seperated from Christ forever and under the wrath of God sounds hellish. Christ is the creator and in him is life, there is no life, peace, joy, justice, mercy, outside of Him. Wherever Christ is not, that would be Hell by definition for the Christian.
