In addition to the bikes you mentioned in the prior video, I would add the Triumph Tiger Sport 660 to your list. It’s less expensive, light wt., fast and agile. It has factory panniers , top box, heated grips, and quick shifter available. I’ve done several 1500-200 mile trips on mine ,only wishing it had cruise control for the long interstate slogs.

@@medler2110 Time being the issue. If you are doing it yourself, you can discount it, but if you are paying a professional, the cost will rise pretty quickly, which is why they will advise things like putting in a new engine.

Freddie,I've got a friend who owns a BMW R1100. He came out one morning to find that the bike wouldn't start. After several hours of fiddling with it, he gave up and took it to a BMW specialist. The mechanic there said that the bike wasn't worth fixing and it would be better to part it out, even though it only had 11000 on the clock. Not wanting to dispose of the bike he decided to start replacing the electric system piece by piece. He started with the CPU, (only second hand parts were used to keep the costs down). Suddenly he had power again but the bike still wouldn't start. He then replaced the starter relay and the bike started and now runs fine. The cost of the parts in total was approximately £300. Breaking the bike would have lost him way more than the price of the parts. Most electrical parts are plug and play so it's just a matter of working through them one part at a time. Hope this helps.

That's a bit of a lottery, though. Your friend was lucky, but trying to fix something by changing parts when you do not have a diagnosis of what has actually failed can be very expensive. You could spend a fortune doing that and still not fix it - worse, with some faults one bit of duff electronics can cause other electronic bits to fail by outputting wrong voltages etc, so you might change parts only to find that new part you put on is itself now faulty caused by a fault deeper in the bike. The first thing to do is diagnose what is wrong - then fix it. And that diagnosis will take a certain level of expert knowledge. Good luck, Freddie (I think in your position I'd take up the kind offer of the gentleman who will take the bike away and fix it). Vince

Mate, I wrote my bike off when I was a nipper (1985 GSXR400) and spent a month rebuilding it with the help of a mechanic mate of mine. I got the bike running perfectly and learned a shitload about mechanics and how the bike worked. Thank God I did, it made me a better biker and taught me a lot. Keep the Bonnie at least as a second bike, surely you can film a full rebuild and turn it into part of your KZfaq business. It'd also be fantastic publicity for whatever mechanic helped you through the learning journey.

I mentioned in a previous video the solenoid was the main starting issue from when you used to jump it to start the bike and that was a while back. Jumping it and the bike starting fine usually means a bad solenoid, which is easy to replace and pretty cheap to do yourself but constantly jumping it can cause problems from wrecking the starter motor or to the contacts on the solenoid fusing together which would probably cause the bike to start when you just turn the key on. Anyway Freddie I'd just give it to the guy who offered to sort it out for his channel, it will probably come back like new. All the best.

Monica has gone and done it Freddie - The Bonnie loves you 🥰 You have no choice but to keep her - that's the Bonnie (and Monika of course) But seriously, it really is starting to look more and more like electrical problems as a result of going through the flood water. Most electrical parts on the bike will cope with a splash of water but not designed to go through what you did. It looks like it's starting to dry out, so let Joe from The Wurks have it to go through it to make sure everything is as it should be. The charging circuit appears to be working, but you still want to be sure the battery is holding a charge. I'm saying that in case you decide to see if it will start tomorrow and get frustrated if it doesn't because the battery has failed to hold a charge. If the engine management light is on when the engine is running, the stored fault code(s) might give a clue as to which sensor(s) isn't working correctly. You can get a Bluetooth device (very cheep) to plug into the ECU/ECM and an app on your phone to read the fault codes. If there are no fault codes stored, then it could have been that the ECU/ECM itself got so swamped with water from riding through the flood that it itself was playing up. It's quite ironic that you have an aversion to bikes with carbs and insist they must have fuel injection, but with fuel injection comes a host of electronics, sensors and an onboard computer for it to work correctly. For bikes with carbs, the ignition side of things is comparatively very simple, especially on older bikes and became more advanced it developed. You can imagine a 1st Gen R1, which had carbs, would have had quite advanced electronic ignition. Go on, you know you want to keep the Bonnie, so take up the offers you've had to get it sorted. But it's clear you've been desiring something new. Then the new bike can be for your bigger adventures, and the Bonnie for the ones nearer home.

Freddie, if you drop your phone in the water, what do you do? Put it in a jar of uncooked rice, it will absorb all the moisture and a very high probability it will work again…consider that the damp English weather especially in winter, storing the bike in a cold, concrete floored brick walled storage isn’t what I would consider conditions for drying anything out. Given that circumstance, placing the bike on a piece of carpet or foam to insulate it from the concrete, cover it with a sheet of plastic, and get a proper dehumidifier to place inside your “tent” will completely dry out any moisture from the wiring and electronics…it may sound like a bother, however it should completely remove moisture from the list of causes for problems with the bike..good luck…so enjoy Monica’s videography!!

He's about to put a big bore and high performance cams on my 2010 Scrambler. Exciting. I live in the USA and here in Colorado most shops charge anywhere between $80 and $125 an hour, so combing thru a number of electrical/engine gremlins can get quite expensive in no time. A couple of years ago I worked on an '82 Honda Silverwing 500cc that had a small, persistent weep from the cooling system. Once I had the bodywork off, radiator drained, radiator hoses off, thermostat housing open, etc., I found that a tiny o-ring had failed. A 10cents new o-ring + a smear of old fashioned plumbing grease solved the problem. The thing is that it took me about 6 or maybe even 7hrs before I had the bike back together and running again. That would have been a heck of a bill in terms of labour cost for a very cheap part! (And, btw, since I was already in there, I did replace all of the 0-rings + flushed the cooling system + removed/washed out the overflow reservoir before refilling with fresh coolant, which maybe the shop would not have done.) A knowledgeable mate who is willing to spend a Saturday tinkering with you would be a great help. I have had some memorable winter weekends doing just that... Nothing like a warm garage, good tunes, hot coffee and cold beer on hand to have a great time. Having a well organized work place, the right tools and parts at the ready makes the whole process nice and smooth. Not to mention that whenever you dig deep into the innards of your bike, you usually spot a number of small issues that can then be addressed at virtually no cost, like removing a spot of rust, replacing missing zip ties/fastners, cleaning and regreasing a few things here and there, etc. Best wishes!

When thinking of problems with a bike, think of it as it's major components. Frame, suspension (forks and shocks), wiring, engine, wheels. If there is a problem with the wiring at the worst you can buy a new wiring harness, if the wiring can't be fixed. You might have a combination of problems. It might be engine including stator (bikes alternator), and something in the wiring. But those can be fixed or replaced. Joe sounds like a good idea if he knows bikes and can take the winter to get everything sorted out and parts and labor is cheaper than a new bike.

You're right about feeling exhausted with it. Biking should be about freedom, relaxation, and blowing away the stress of the day to day. Riding around waiting for your next breakdown is the complete opposite of that. As it's the start of winter it's the perfect time to let someone get to work on your Bonnie. Did you ask how much that other Bonnie at TriMoto was? It looked like a potential fine replacement if yours ends up being economically unviable.
@raymorris952
@raymorris952 7 ай бұрын
If the charging issues are sorted, get someone to look at the fuel mapping on it, your fuel consumption and running issues started after you swap the exhaust! Its probably running rich mixture, nothing drastically wrong with the engine, its not missing or blowing oil smoke. When the aftermarket exhaust was fitted, it was probably remapped to use more fuel , now the exhaust has been put back to standard the fuel mixture is off, thats why it bogs down when you give it throttle, this then fouling the spark plugs with un burnt fuel, making the bike run crap, The starter issues was definitely water, in the starter or soiled, when you turned on the ignition, the starter was spinning constantly, even after the bike was running, this damaged the starter motor, But hopefully Jason has fixed that problem. DID HE DO A COMPRESSION TEST !

I’d check the valve timing. If you’re previous mechanic got the timing one tooth out it will drink petrol and give a poor compression reading which might seem like a worn bore. It isn’t smoking, it’s not using a lot of oil, so I suspect the bores may be fine.

Being a Royal Enfield Classic 500 owner it rather drains my lifeblood to say it but a good option right now for you could be to buy one of those new Classic 350's, brand new. You will know it's his history from the start, it will work every day without worry, you can ride it for your channel and it's cheap but with bags of character. You could also keep it as a back up bike if you want try something else or sell it with minimal loss. Just my thoughts.

If that's carburettors fitted to the bike, I had an engine that was showing all the signs of intermittent electrical problems. The local garage just could not trace it. I was gonna scrap it, but thought no. Took the fuel bowls of the carbs They were contaminated with water and sludge. A quick clean and that engine ran sweet and smooth again

my hunch from your description is sand damage, getting into the alternator and into the bores. worst case being damage to the main journals. It looks like you have a couple of referbishers near you, so might be worth looking.

Check charging, check battery, check compression, put std pipes back on, or fit some cheap baffles to give some back pressure in the aftermarket exhaust, or download a map for open pipes, listen to engine for rattling, top or bottom end, check for smoking, compression test, a mornings (free) work tbh.

I had an Indian scout that would keep quitting while riding down the road. I took to several mechanics to no avail. I finally took to a small shop and he just replaced the entire ignition rather than debugging what's wrong. When I got it back no more problems.

Freddie, I don't like seeing you down, everything has a solution, and you will get there. I'm also going through some hard times, and I can tell you that tomorrow is a new day. About your Bonny, and this is my most honest opinion. Departing from a well-beloved bike/car can be hard, and after some time you will miss it or regret it, so take jo's offer, make a partnership with him, and get yourself a temporary main bike, like a used interceptor. You will get through this with Monica on your side. Best regards

If truth be known most dealers aren't interested in bikes that are simply difficult to diagnose and take up workshop time and space and then the customer thinks the bill is excessive against the bikes value. The bike can be sorted if you love it so much. A tale of woe but true of many things.

I was thinking a bit more. Buy a multi meter and do a voltage test to see if it’s charging and a current test for a parasitic drain. Both tests are really easy and no doubt here on KZfaq for advice. Those tests will give you or whoever fixes it a lot of info.

Hi Freddy, if you want to travel widely, where you fill up fuel, turn the key et get on with it, almost any Japanese motorcycle will do. If you’re on a budget and being a tall guy, try the Honda 500x or the Nc 750x dct. Those bikes are bulletproof. You could say you want to keep something with character or something classic but those bikes are temperamental. You don’t want unpredictable reliability. Your trips are about your destination and getting there, etc. It shouldn’t be about "what to fix next". I have 2008 1200RT on 112000km, runs like a Swiss watch as a daily workhorse. I have a 2020 1250 gs adventure as a touring bike. I also have 2015 Yamaha xjr1300c as a neo retro fair weather back to basics fun bike. It had fuel injection but nothing else. Previously I have have had two k16GT up to 75000km between them. I travel Europe. Never had a problem but all these bikes are dealer serviced, including the RT. Look after them and they look after you. However you do get certain brands or some bikes within a brand, that don’t age well or should not be owned outside of the guarantee period. As an anecdote, I got the 2022 RE 650 Interceptor as 50th birthday gift as I was crazy about neo retro. The bike looked great, all the chrome, etc. 5000km later, I flogged it for the XJR. The RE650 came with a defective front wheel rim that vibrated. It was swopped out under guarantee. The ignition switch was imprecise and sometimes needed to be turned on/off/on to get lights on. Spokes got loose. Then as the bike got run in, I noticed it couldn’t hold a straight line. Checked and tightened spokes, changed tires to Michelins, tightened steeering head bearings. It just wouldn’t stop the steering wobble. In the end, I said F_ck this, not having it. I traded it for the XJR. The XJR has Ohlins rear shocks from factory fully adjustable. Got the dual disk R1 brake calipers. Just feels a more solid well put together bike. I think the RE650 twin is an awesome engine. The rest of the bike is too cheap. I guess you only get what you pay for. You could fix the Bonneville and use it locally as a daily workhorse. If it breaks it’s no train smash as you close to home. For touring, you can’t be pfaffing about, losing time, wasting money, cancelling hotels, missing ferries, etc because ultimately this is what WILL happen. Low budget? Get a Japanese bike with fuel injection. Hope this helps. 🙂✌️

Freddie, love your videos many of them are nostalgic to me as I am a man of Kent (Folkestone) now living in Melbourne Australia. I to have a beautiful Bonnie. Before discarding your beloved bike I would be putting a new battery in it, this could be most of your problems as it is obviously dead and each time you jump start it the alternator is having to work super hard and the voltage to the electronics could be all over the place and not stable. this may even result in higher fuel consumption. So don't give up on her just yet. Regard from down under. :)

When you have an affinity for a bike and it fits you like a glove, it's a keeper. I'm glad you are considering ways to get it fixed. Get a little scooter for pootlng about with for the next few months, they are better than they look. You will get your money back on it when the triumph is ready.

Check all electric and electronic, especially ALL connectors. Clean them. Also clean carburetors . It may be also water/corrosion of some sensors? It's not mechanical. Probably. So it may be some work but without dismantling the engine. That was done when you had spark plug problem.

I sympathise with your feeling of being drained by a broken machine. We have a 233,000mile Volvo 940 that recently started showing off in quite a serious way. It went from a 100 piece puzzle to a 1,000 piece puzzle but on Friday, with the help of two chums, it was healed. The entirety of the ignition and fuelling system had to be replaced. Lots of skinned knuckles, frozen fingers, cups of tea and swearing but it lives again and the feeling of having fixed it is great. The sort of intermittent, multifaceted showing off it was doing was puzzling, frustrating and left me unable to trust the thing. It was exactly the sort of fault that puts older higher mileage vehicles in the scrap yard. By all means rest and start enjoying a new bike over winter but, if the offer of help is there, take it. There would be no worse feeling than selling it to see someone else fix and ride it for another decade.

Freddie my wife and I feel for you and your situation. And we watch as you struggle to find a replacement that will match your riding style and the roads you like to travel. With that being said from what we see you have an old soul and it seems like tradition and classic styling. As a proud Britt it is understandable why Triumph holds a special place. Being that you have had the classic Bonnie already Q my wife and I want to strongly suggest you consider the all new Moto Guzzi 850 V7. We know you will love the classic looks. The unmistakable rumble of the Moto Guzzi as you tour around the back roads of Europe and any other parts of the world you ride. We believe it will fit in your budget meet those classic designs and look that matches your style. We have one and love the quality, sound and just the fun of having that trans V Twin. There is nothing like them on the road. We know you like classic Italian design since you own the Fiat 500. You will not be disappointed to just test ride it and put it through its paces. Btw should you ever come to Florida, Daytona Beach you two will always have a place to stay. Hope to see you on the 850. We enjoy your channels very much. Merry Christmas to you two

Freddie, I too had the same feelings as you have for your Bonnie. I had a 2012 SE and spent loads of time and money on electrical bugaboos. I’ve also lived those moments in fear of stalling and not being able to start again. My troubles began shortly after I purchased it new and needed at new wiring harness, replaced under warranty. Over the years I’ve replaced nearly every solenoid, relay or switch on the bike. The irony is I kept the bike for 10 years while others came and went. There was a connection I felt to both the bike and the Triumph brand that resonated with me. In contast, every Japanese bike I’ve owned has delivered care-free motoring. And even my Guzzi Griso has been trouble free in comparison. I love your channel, and even though your adventures on the Bonnie are what first attracted me, I would love to be on the journey with you and Monika discovering the joys of a new and different motorcycle.

I was going to suggest doing a collaboration with a KZfaq mechanic to take it on as a project. It will probably only cost you for the parts. On the new bike front, I saw your video on the Rebel 1100. You seemed awfully taken with that motorcycle (I am about to upgrade to one from my NC750). I think that bike will suit you perfectly. Anyway, good luck with what ever you do. It is sad to see the Bonneville relegated to the corner of the parking space. All that said, life is about change. Change can be exciting.
