Here's a saying I read at a feed store once Chris. " If you want fresh quality oats, you have to pay a fair price. However, if you can settle for oats that have already been through the horse, that comes at a much cheaper price" 😂

I’ve done everything you could imagine with tobacco consumption. I chewed when younger, smoked cigarettes, cigars for 8 years. Tried a pipe a couple times and was hooked ever since. The pure essence and methodology along with the enjoyment from pipe smoking change the way I looked at tobacco. It’s a wholesome event. A wonderful habit. Anyway I just wanted to thank you for all your videos and appreciate the time you’ve took to share your wisdom.

I've been smoking a pipe for many years (more than I really care to admit), and I was fortunate enough to have someone to teach me what to do and what not to do in the beginning, so this has been a very enjoyable journey for me. But I know from talking to others that they have not had the benefit of having a mentor in this hobby and on their behalf I want to thank you for continuing to make these videos.

Agree with you completely. Cutting corners on tobacco will make an ex-smoker out of you pretty soon. Get a good quality leaf and smoke it leisurely and, dare I say it, respectfully, you'll be an avid pipester for life! I bought my first pipe in 1961 and made just about every mistake a novice could make before getting on the right track. There were books and pamphlets back in those days, but nothing like this site, where you take the newbie by the metaphorical hand and help him avoid going through what I had to. Many thanks.

I Live in the Dominican Republic and I'm starting to smoke pipe. Even though we have a wide variety of good Cigars, we have no variety of Pipe tobacco as you mentioned for Latin America. This video show me that you know what you're talking about. I just subscribe and will do as you mentioned, I will spend a bit to get the premium one to avoid a bad experience. Thank you sir.

You're hitting the nail right on the head here. One thing I'm finding with my pipe smoking journey is that when I invest a little more in tobacco, I get more reward for my efforts. I've recently been buying some good premium blends and they've been great smokes. I got a pretty cool story that kind of ties into this. As I've been delving into pipe smoking, I've been learning about things like Syrian vs Cyprian Latakia. I was talking to the pipe guy at a tobacconist I like to go to about this subject, and he showed me a blend called Syrian Super Balkan, made by McLelland. It's a blend that's made up of Syrian Latakia, oriental, Virginia and perique. Sounds good already. But then he pointed out that the tin was dated 2006! I could not pass it up - I had to try it, despite the added price. I popped it open tonight and was surprised how great it smelled; it has this rich raisin smell to it that's just beautiful. And when I smoked some, I was not let down at all. There are flavours like raisins, wine, at one point cinnamon bread, some perfumey notes to it too. And the bowl just lasted, and I was using my smallest pipe. So good!! The only sad part is that I probably won't come across this again, so I better savour it. But it just demonstrates what you said - spend the money and get a good tobacco, and you won't be sorry. A great video, but also important video! Keep up the great work!👍🏻

This is an excellent video. Great advice about buying quality tobacco. I wish I had known 20 years ago. My first tobacco back then was borkum riff whiskey and it was so bad I was turned away at first. A few years later I tried super value vanilla. That was a mistake also. I didn't know a good tobacco shop so I went online and discovered everything there is available while hunting for better tobacco. Now all I smoke is premium brands like C&D and Mcclelland.

Great video Chris, as always ! I agree with you and I'm glad to have followed the right path... Here in France it's really difficult to find a decent pipe tobacco. Great video; very important information. The principle of getting quality goes for many things in life, too--you want to try a new sport, then buy or rent the equipment the pros use to find out how fun/challenging/whatever it can be, then go from there. I even applied this principle in buying a kitchen dishes brush for my family--I'm tired of crappy brushes that wore out every few months, so I checked out the ones used by restaurants (at a restaurant supply), then bought it on Amazon; works great! I'm a new subscriber, so I hope you have a video(s) on what good premium tobaccos are, how to pick them, etc.

great video and thank you! im new to pipe smoking and have a question: as far as blindly guessing, what or how much an oz. is good pipe tobacco and below what price range is considered cheap tobacco???? and it seems like a lot of discount tobacco stores go more out to have better quality cigars but the pipe tobaccos in the jars seem almost always cheap.........
@PreachermanPiper7 жыл бұрын
A higher quality pipe tobacco will be much better satisfaction. The cheaper tobacco's (no telling what all is in it) will not bring satisfaction, which brings you to smoke more often without achieving quality satisfaction. {{ Very good video }}

Okay, that explained a few things I didn't know. Especially about burley. Thanks. I'm considering a "smoking tour" as it were of the older/oldest over the counter name brands. Prince Albert, Sir Walter Raleigh, Half & Half, and other brands of a similar age. The thought being, they have been around for decades or, in some cases, a century or more. They wouldn't have done that unless they were at least decent. They are also cheap, so there's not a large monetary investment simply to try them. Any advice or recommendations among that type? And is there any commonality in them as far as the type of tobacco? (Aromatic, burley, English etc.) From what I've seen the different brands of tobacco seem like going to a dinner buffet. You just need to keep going back to the steam tables and trying everything till you find what "You" enjoy. then fill up your plate ... or bowl, as the case is, with that favorite. In the same metaphor, is there a dessert tobacco type? Thanks, again.

Cole Norton - that pleases me to hear my friend, as for St. Patrick's day blends, I'm sorry I really don't have a favorite, something from Peterson perhaps, and I have never tried the spiral method, seems to messy, and I think it could damage the rim of my pipe, just my opinion of course. 👍👍👍

+Muttnchop Piper Question: Newbie piper here, but have smoked ciggies, a few cigars and hashish with tobacco for 30 years straight, so I am not new to smoking, just new to smoking pipe. I have watched many of your videos now, and I have learned a lot, I would not have had such a smooth start skong pipe if not for you, so thanks! Now, I need help. I went and got myself a tin of Dunhill Early Morning, and I must say I find it weak and with little flavor (although it gets a little harsh at the bottom of the bowl). It is like a cigarette with some hickory smoke to it (I believe that is from the tobacco called Latakia?). I can easily smoke it, but it does little for me, and the hickory smoke /wet camp fire note is not really interesting to me, at all. So, the question is, where do I go from here? The only pipe tobacco I have tried before this is called Special Dublin Navy Mixture, package does not say by whom, but I think it is also made by the guys at Orlik (I live in Denmark, so many of their products around). That one is sweet and very flavorful with strong prune and raisin notes, and I like it a lot. But I suspect, after watching youtube vids, that it is full of artificial food-grade flavoring, and I kinda dislike that idea. So I would like something that has that deep prune/raisin type taste, but no or little hickory/wet camp fire taste, and no artificial flavor added. Can you tell me what tobacco types I am actually looking for? What tobaccos taste like deep, dark prunes/ raisins? Is there a Dunhill blend to my taste? Please direct a newbie piper in the right direction :) Cheers from Denmark.

Muttnchop, I'm enjoying your videos. They have helped get back into pipe smoking from which I had given up on a while back in my early 20's. I'm 2 weeks in now and really enjoying it. I took your advice and bought a low cost briar pipe made in Italy, and started out with a quality tobacco, Frog Morton's "On the Town." I feel I'm ready to change it up. I've been looking at a couple of different "high end" pipes, which I feel I am comfortable with. However, my question is, what tobaccos would you recommend I try next to start creating a rotation. I do not want to get into aromatics just yet until I have a couple of pipes in my collection, so I can dedicate each of them to specific tobacco types. Thanks again and happy piping!

Hey Muttnchop, I hope this finds you well. I have a question that perhaps you can answer. I bought a tin of tobacco that has a very strong soap taste. It's just very, very soapy. It's a C.A.O blend. Not Eileen's Dream. That stuff is great. It a cherry blend. Any idea what might be the cause. Its horrible

Greetings, Muttnchop. I was wondering if you had come across a brand of tobacco that consistently comes at a perfect or near perfect moisture content from the tin. I begun pipe smoking not too long ago and I am trying to find a point of reference for just the right moisture. I keep seeing videos and descriptions, but I feel I need to touch some of it in order to fully understand what I am looking for when I leave some tobacco out to dry before packing a pipe.
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
Vanadse - This is a hard thing to gage, I find Dunhill Early Morning Pipe has the most consistency for the proper moisture, but this is not to say that it will be that way for every tin, manufacturing, atmospheric conditions, and packaging have major impacts when it comes to moisture content. 👍👍👍
@Vanadse7 жыл бұрын
Well, Early Morning was on my list of blends to try, so I will keep that in mind. I have been enjoying some Dunhill London and I did find slightly moist, we'll see how Early Morning fares. Thank you!

Hi Muttnchop piper. I have never smoked cigars or cigaretts. I bought some pipes from local shop and premium Peterson tobacco: Old Dublin, Sherlock Holmes and Connoiseurs Choice as aromatic. I want to have pleasant smoke with that aromatic, but I am getting only tobacco taste. Can you make video about aromatic tobacco, what is difference in packing and smoking aromatic to natural tobacco... etc... It eould be very helpful for me, because I was very happy with smell from the tin, but smoke was not so good. Marek from Slovakia (europe)

Mutton Chop, Couldn’t find any reviews on the Hearth & Home Mid-Town Series blends. Any comments for those? I read some good reviews for Chatham Manor, but when I tried it, I feel like what you describe in this video. Seems to start out okay, but in the end, I’m left disappointed. Tried using the same pipe over and over to see if by using again that the tobacco would get better. It didn’t. Thoughts? Thanks and enjoy your videos.

Please I need your feedback on captain black royal or round taste (classic) and erinmore mixture Also one of my pipe cracked from the top and I can't figure out the reason why is it due to my bad use or is it bad quality pipe noting that I clean it regularly and I keep my smoke as cool as possible using breath method

Nice video! I live in Germany and would like to correct one thing: It is correct that tobacco mixtures are slightly more expensive than in the USA. But they are not as expensive as you say in your little example. It's no problem to get a premium blend here in Germany for less than 15 €. And although the American blends are unfortunately not available here, there is still a large amount of really good blends on the European market. There are even a few small manufacturers that offer blends for less than 14 € for 100 g and these are often quite outstanding.

Hans Dampf - Thanks Hans for the correction, not living in Europe, sometimes I’m ignorant of the facts about tobacco pricing in all areas. A lot of European countries aren’t as lucky as we are when it comes to pricing, sorry for the mistake. 👍👍👍👍

And even if customs nab it occasionally, do lots of small orders and it's cheaper to just reorder than pay the import tax (unless of course your country fines you heavily like in europe!). In Australia it is around $75 a 50g tin. Importing it in and losing 2-3 is still cheaper than buying it locally.

@@JasonTankard How often does customs nab it?
@JasonTankard5 жыл бұрын
@@tsc-ko1yy More and more often these days. And the choice of what you can buy locally is terrible. Looks like laws are coming in soon where you can get fined for importing tobacco without being a registered importer, which of course means, they will always nab your orders on the way in.... Still cheaper to get it in and pay the duty than it is to buy something local, especially at the reduced range ect.
@angeloparis79635 жыл бұрын
The duty is $1093 per kilo. The import license is free, but if you don't have one from July it is confiscated. At the moment I'm waiting for a ransom note from Customs.

I am from Austria and 50g premium tobacco costs ~ 15$ We dont have the greatest variaty of tobaccos but its not that bad. This year we got Cornell&Diehl/ G.L Pease tobaccos also available. Germany, our neighbors, have some realy small and nice tobacco comanies, like TAK, DAN Tobacco... Plenty to try out and I would say, that the pipe hobby is still very inexpensive, compared to other hobbies.
@D356117 жыл бұрын
Excellent advice Chris. Unfortunately, some tobacconists recommend the lower grade tobaccos to new pipe smokers, most likely because they are making a higher percentage of profit off the cheap stuff. As soon as I started smoking strictly tin tobacco in the early days, my smoking experience increased tenfold. Another thing that can make it difficult for new pipe smokers, is that tobacconists don't have their tobaccos categorized, and the labels on the tobacco itself doesn't designate tobaccos aromatic or non aromatic. I'm afraid that during the learning process, a lot of new pipe smokers decide that pipe smoking just isn't for them, and they give up the hobby, before they become educated to the differences between tobaccos.

dear Muttnchop piper, thanks for your information on this video, to be honest i really enjoy having a conversation about piping with you. here i have a question and need your opinion. i was a casual smoker, i enjoyed having few cigarettes during a week. actually i lost my interest to cigarette for last 4 months and nearly quit smoking at all, but i always wanted to taste pipe smoking one day. during my smoking time i enjoyed heavy cigars, flavored cigarettes and aromatics. now to for pipe smoking, what kind of pipe and tobacco is good to start with? thank you in advance for your help

I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos sir. I've just started my journey into pipe smoking and it has been made a easier by yourself in particular. A query I have is I notice in your videos you mention Dunhill Early morning (I believe it is one of your favourites?) and nightcap. Would you recommend these tobaccos to a beginner pipe smoker too? I have dabbled with some aromatics but I'm keen to try other tobaccos. As I see and hear a lot of people mention these two tobaccos I want to try it, but don't want to waste it if it wouldn't be beneficial to me just yet as I'm new to this world. In comparison it wouldn't be wise to give someone who's used to drinking cheap lager and £80 bottle of red wine if they wouldn't appreciate it in the same way as a connoisseur. A little over exaggerated but I think you understand. Your thoughts? Keep up the great videos (including the stories!) always a like from me.
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
Alex Miller - I would recommend Early Morning pipe, but not Nightcap. EMP is a light English blend, so if you are able to purchase 1oz. Bulk I would suggest that because as a new pipe smoker you may not appreciate it quite yet, if you can only get tins then buy 1 tin and try it, if you don't like it put it in a canning jar then try it again when you're more experienced. 👍👍👍
@M1LLERTARY7 жыл бұрын
Fantastic, thank you for the advice. I'll be sure to get a tin as soon as. Take care!

Alex Miller I definitely agree with Muttn on this. EMP is a great light blend. It's got plenty of flavor but won't put you on your heels. I actually just used it to break in a new Flogglewerks Hobbit Pipe that I plan on only using for light English blends. Really tasty stuff. Let us know what you think! Steve

I love the videos!!! As a new/intermediate smoker I have a video request. Could you please explain why they say one smoke in 24 hours, should you have 1--10 pipes? I enjoy 1-2 bowles a day and I dont want to distroy my pipe to quickly.
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
Bigchill01 - don't listen to that, I smoke 1 pipe a day, I usually will smoke 3 bowls out of that pipe before I clean it and let it rest for 24 Hours or more, the reason you let it rest is that the wood, and carbon cake absorbs moisture that can cause the tobacco to taste bad, and create more steam that will cause you tongue bite. I find I have no problems smoking 3 bowls a day, just remember to run a couple of pipe cleaners down the stem into the bowl to clear out any moisture, or dottle, and empty the bowl and use a pipe cleaner to while away the ash in between bowls of tobacco. 👍👍👍

I agree with you totally with you Muttnchop (Chris ) when it comes to tobacco but I would like to add just one thing. Briar pipes can be VERY expensive but on the other hand. Cheap "briar" pipes can be very nasty. These "briar" pipes do not have to be made out of briar wood. Some are made out of pear wood for example and made to look like briar . So, it someone smokes a very cheap nasty pipe with a cheap nasty tobacco they are going to get a cheap and nasty smoke which will leave them with a disgusting taste in their mouth and never smoke a pipe ever again. A good pipe for a "virgin" pipe smoker in my opinion is...... a Falcon. A metal stem which is easy to keep clean and a bowl that is a middle of the road priced briar which will last for years. Here in the UK a Falcon pipe complete with a bowl will cost round about £20.

Wotsupmate - Thanks for that added info my friend. Love my Falcons. 👍👍👍

Question, if the cheaper tobacco companies are not taking time to let the topping be absorbed by the tobacco, is it possible to cellar some cheap tobacco, allowing the toppings to be absorbed more and thus creating a situation where that flavoring lasts longer?
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
CloverTac - my instinct is to say no, these companies try and scrimp on everything, using the cheapest tobacco they can get their hands on, and instead of dousing the tobacco with the flavoring, let it be absorbed then dry with industrial dryers, they lightly spritz the tobacco just enough to make sure it smell good, there is not enough of the flavoring added to soak into the tobacco, 😏😏😏
@CloverTac7 жыл бұрын
gotcha, some cheap ones seem to do well. I bought a pound each of the Super Value brand in Chocolate and Vanilla back in November I think. they immediately went into jars. both were super cheap and both smoke very well, so apparently some cheap ones are alright. neither of these are a particularly dry tobacco. i was curious if me getting them straight into jars has helped or if they were just decent to start with.
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
CloverTac - from what I have heard Super Value is a decent tobacco, so I doubt that it is the kind of tobacco I am talking about, plus if it is tobacco that is produced correctly then putting it in jars will help by allowing the flavoring to penetrate the tobacco longer, plus the grade of tobacco they use is probably better, 👍👍👍

thank you for the opinion and clarification brother. :)
