Jason Hale is such an underrated guitarist and I love that you point that out. I grew up in Corpus Christi, TX where he is originally from and would randomly see him at the guitar center from time to time. When I started college I took an audio engineering class and Jason was in it. I thought it was absolutely hilarious that he was very nonchalant about it and that no one in the class knew who he was. The second class, the teacher came in and was like “Jason! I randomly came across you in a music video and holy crap dude really good stuff.”

I was around 14-15 when All's Well That Ends Well came out and it was a huge influence on me trying to play guitar and make my own music. for anyone who want more craig owens, d.r.u.g.s. got back together recently (albeit with a complete lineup change including members of all that remains, '68, and bring me the horizon) and dropped a _really_ good album last year, its more 2020-22 silverstein than chiodos soundwise but it's def worth a listen. they're gonna be going on tour in a few weeks too with two of my absolute favorite bands on the planet (varials & the callous daoboys)

For me, that album was actually on my worst list, though maybe my expectations were a little too high. Plus, I don't think I needed to hear Craig sing to the point where his voice might crack on FOUR songs. If I'm gonna be honest, I don't think we really needed this album.

This was my fav band in highschool. I could play all of their songs on guitar AND bass, and lemme tell you Chiodos bass HITS. Recently tapped back into them when I caught my friend listening to hxc. I said hol up we need to bump this lmao. Been on repeat the last week nonstop, such carefree fun music. Just might be my fav band again, all of the lyrics came right back to me. Even the tracks I forgot I loved like teeth the size of piano keys... remembered every single word like I listened to it yesterday, when it's closer to a decade at least. I haven't made it to the illuminaudio segment but I'll say its an album I enjoy today, but didn't back when. It may not be my favorite but it's a fantastic listen from start to finish. I'd take it over many other albums today, but in all honesty the memories I made with Craig's Chiodos tend to persuade my tastes. Rock on y'all regardless, no matter your fav album or vocalist. No one is late to the party when we're all here to party, let's get ragin

"Looking For a Tornado" is one of the best songs Chiodos has put out and it just goes to show that if they'd taken their time with the record and really sat down and decided on an overall sound it could have been as good as BPB. I didnt know much of the drama going on between Craig and the band but i got to spend about 20 minutes hanging out with him at Warped Tour and the dude was so fuckin chill. I gave him props a bit about his set, which i had enjoyed thoroughly, and then we talked about some of the other bands on the tour and who he enjoyed listening to. What was cool was that he engaged me in this conversation it wasnt an interview of me just asking questions and him trying to dip, he asked me what songs i liked from Chiodos, he asked me about how i like warped tour and who my favorite bands were. It was a real conversation between two people, not a celebrity and a fan. And out of dozens of band members ive met in my concert going career, only a handful have been willing to just have a normal conversation with their fans. I have a picture with him we took at the end of this interaction, and i will always cherish that picture and the conversation i had with him.

What a great synopsis and history of Chiodos. I’ve been a fan since the first “All Nereids Beware” music video came out when Craig was wearing a shirt way too small. Growing up, I was also a fall of Troy fan. When Thomas joined Chiodos and Devil was produced, I was incredibly disappointed. They missed a chance to utilize some of the heavier tracks Thomas wrote (see: The Holloway Tape) and then guitar playing (see: I just got this symphony goin) I envisioned a world with them both singing, and that didn’t happen. What my head imagined they would write and what they wrote were two different things. Erak joining Chiodos should’ve been pivotal and it ended up being the exact opposite

Regarding Devil and Thomas Erak. I met the dude at a show and straight up asked him what was the deal with chiodos. He said all the crazy stuff he did on the record was muted or barely there due to craig owens. Im sure hes told others but i heard it in an angry drunken rage but I agree, he was underutilized.

"For 2010, this was brand new territory for the post-hardcore genre" - I have to strongly disagree there. While "Notes in Constellations" does have exactly the vibe you are describing, it had already been done by Circa Survive a whole 5 years earlier. Same two-guitar stereo delay sound, same half-tempo drum groove, same vocal style (high range, but semi-soft with steep interval jumps) and same lightly distorted bass sound - it's straight up the recipe for Circa Survive!

I actually never actually hard any of their music from what I remember, it's been a long time but I remember them being VERY popular back when I was in middle-school/high school. I remember a lot of the Emo kids wearing their shirts so even though I never actually heard their music, they still bring a sense of nostalgia for me remembering how popular they were amongst a lot of teens back in the early-mid 2000s. I didn't really immerse myself into Post-Hardcore when I was in high school outside of The Used, Thursday, Refused, and Underoath and that was only because I heard their singles on the FUSE channel way back in the day. I'm surprised that I never got around to hearing any of their music seeing how popular they were back in the 2000s. Though maybe I did but didn't realize it because admittedly, I wasn't all that into Post-Hardcore because I was one of the people who did feel that the whiny, somewhat nasally vocal style could get a bit grating on my ears lol But I actually was enjoying the more neoclassical influenced stuff from the snippets you shared so I'll definitely be giving that more of a look. Anyway, awesome retrospective!

One of the best bands of all time in the scene, no questions asked. Them, and Underoath are untouchable. Anyone else I'm missing? Those two are the reigning champs in my book.

I see Illuminaudio without a doubt as their best album. I've always been a death metal guy and only discovered Chiodos in 2016 so i didnt have any nostalgia for them. So Illuminaudio and Devil is what got me into the band. To my ears it was completely new and something I never really thought I would like but it was something I couldn't stop listening too. I think it's a shame that's all I really got from them cause to me Illuminaudio and Devil are special... The older albums I've never really been able to get into besides a couple songs from Bone Palace. When I think about Chiodos I think of those two albums. So yeah... I think they had something really cool that feels ended way too soon.

I think my favorite thing about being alive during the ever changing eras of band members was before Craig left there was the unreleased recorded song “Thermacare”. After Craig left, he took the lyrics to D.R.U.G.S. And they released “The only thing you talk about”, as he owned the rights to the lyrics. Chiodos would later release “Stratovolcano mouth”on Illuminaudio which was the same instrumentation/composition as “Thermacare”, with different lyrics. Insane time to witness.

I wish this video went into this more, the simultaneous release of Illuminaudio and D.R.U.G.S. was a very interesting time to be a fan. That story in particular would’ve been cool to hear more about.
