I react to "Landmines" by Sum 41 and take a look at the history of Sum 41. Is "Landmines" their way to go out on top?

Completely, understand your take on fans. I’ve been listening to the band since Dave’s possessed hair on half hour of power. It was interesting to see where they took the band through the subsequent albums. I will always prefer their pop punk stuff over there metal but love their whole DiScography. All of the different elements can be found throughout their discography except for thank God they got rid of rap.

What a year 2001 was. Blink-182 - TOYPAY and Sum 41 - AKNF, both mixed/engineered by the legend Jerry Finn. RIP. Both albums together defined my musical taste and still to this day I rate them 10/10. Also, I can wait Heaven x Hell, 10+10 songs, 10 Punk and 10 Metal songs? I mean the best of Sum's both side. AWESOME! I really like their approach to metal, IMO suits them!

I think part of the allure of Chuck is the backstory to the album itself. They were filming a doc in the Congo when fighting broke out all around them and they were trapped in their hotel for days. I think a lot of the darker, heavier vibes comes from that experience.

Tbh whatever these guys put out right now could never put a scratch on their legacy for me. You HAVE to understand that NOBODY else from my shitty suburban Canadian town has done anything notable other than these guys! The DEFINITION of hometown heroes for me, any musical endeavour I embark upon in my life is a direct result of them. Them being from Ajax validated EVERYTHING my rancid teen brain was feeling. Imagine the “Canadian Blink” growing up right around you. They seriously make anything seem possible for a dumb kid in this town like me.

Guilt nerdy metal fan Chuck lover here. Though honestly over the years as I got into and began preferring increasingly gnarly types of metal, Chuck still really holds up for me. Not even just middle school nostalgia speaking. The songwriting and catchy aspects of it are just that damn good. If it were just my current metal preferences speaking, I'd probably just be gushing about We're All to Blame, The Bitter End, and 88 and call it day, but the whole album is amazing. That said, I do really like their pop punk stuff as well. All Killer, No Filler is indeed all killer, no filler. This new song is pretty tight, but I do think the whoahs in the chorus are kinda cheesy for my liking. Very much looking forward to both halves of this upcoming double album.

Fun fact, the chorus for Underclass Hero's titular opener, was originally the chorus for Chuck's opener "No Reason", but they went with another vocal melody for that one. You can hear it's almost the exact same chord progressions in the two choruses. I'm on AKNF as well, but Chuck is a very close second, not because of the metal stuff (I was 13 at the time Chuck came out, to me it was all just "rock") but it was just way more experimental with tracks like Slipping Away and 88, and Pieces is their best slow song to date!
@jeremymcewen182
@jeremymcewen182 10 ай бұрын
Actually, the chorus for the song Underclass hero was original the chorus to a Chuck B-side titled “Subject to Change.” The bridge of subject to change was then used as the chorus to the song “No Reason”. You can listen to subject to change here on KZfaq.

I'm a bit of a nerd and I love metal. Nerds have, in many cases, spent a good portion of their lives feeling like they don't fit in. And then they discover metal and it's lyrics which can often be about fighting back and standing up for yourself. They suddenly feel powerful while listening to this stuff. They go to a metal concert and realize that there are thousands of people who feel the exact same way as they do. And then they have found their family.

I've loved sum 41 since school as a 12 year old in 2002. Their album 13 voices helped me through my divorce, the song war was my favourite, I know the album was strongly about Derick and his near death moment but I could relate some of the songs to my feelings.

I love their entire discography, and I wear my Sum 41 shirt all the time. I was BUMMED when they announced their farewell but I'm digging the new song and I can't wait to hear the rest! P.S. it killed me when you said nerdy men with beards or elder emo moms. So accurate 😂

I grew with them. They had all killer no filler which was perfect then as I grew in music they put out does this look infected which was right where I was at. Then of course chuck. With me is a great song later in their career. Great live too

I’ve always liked Underclass Hero, it’s consistently remained in my albums on my phones over the years. From what I remember though, at the time they got flack for it because it was looked at as kind of ripping off Green Day’s American Idiot. It had some of those vibes, but it was its own thing, again, I always liked it. But yeah, I agree that they never had a bad album, always solid.

Underclass has songs that are very similar to each other, giving the impression of being a recycled album. However, it was the first album that Deryck produced alone. What makes it my favorite album of theirs is the reflective and melancholic vibe, and the instrumental part (Walking Disaster has 10 instrument tracks in the intro, for example)

Underclass Hero has always been a favorite of mine. I find it crazy that the rest of the fan base doesn't fw it. I was in elementary school for that one so I was plenty nerdy but not neckbeard metal guy nerdy 🤷🏾‍♂️

The idea that nerds and metal go hand and hand sounds to me. The subgenre I gravitate to the most is indie.

I think I'm the male version of emo mum, in my 40's but can't wait to let rip at the farewell tour! Live, the guys are awesome, (along with Deryk's personal issues, performing obviously takes a lot) can see why they would want to go out with a bang. I'm here for it.

I highly suggest watching m 41 documentary in the Congo. Chuck makes a ton of sense after understanding they where in the middle of a war zone. The track -All to blame- is pretty much about the war in Africa. If you didn't know Chuck is the name of the UN peace keeper that evacuated the band from a hotel in a hot zone.

Sum 41 was my entry to alternative music and they also describe my transition from a popular pop-punk teenager to a bearded metal-nerd. Metal - not even once!
