It's one of the most accessible comics I've ever read, too. It's pretty high on my list of recommendations for first time comics readers. For as much as I love....say.....Claremont's entire run on Uncanny X-Men--some eras and storylines more than others--I tend to fear the dated colloquialisms and pop culture references would be a turn-off to a casual reader. But Bendis' very natural, yet sufficiently melodramatic teenage dialogue coupled with the Ultimate books' deliberately cinematic presentation make it far more approachable than a lot of other great comic book runs that might ask too much of the casual reader.

The Ultimate Universe had the potential to outshine the main Marvel universe but they definitely shouldn’t have Mark Millar or Jeph Loeb anywhere near that universe. Imagine if it was Bendis on Ultimate Spider-Man, Grant Morrison on Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ed Brubaker on The Ultimates and Mark Waid on Ultimate X-Men

I actually wouldn't mind seeing Grant Morrison, Ed Brubaker and Mark Waid be writing on Ultimate Marvel comics and, in fact, if Jeph Loeb wasn't writing on both Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum and post-Ultimatum, we would probably never see Ultimate Reed Richards becoming the Maker and probably would still or would not get to have Miles Morales' Spider-Man. So... probably thinking that Mark Millar and Jeph Loeb are sorta, kinda necessary evil... in some ways...? And yet, not every comic books doesn't need to be about boring politics, just have some fun non-politics-focused comic book, i'm just saying. Ans also, imagine J. Michael Strazynski, Peter J. Tomasi, Jonathan Hickman writing the Ultimate Marvel universe probably way back during it early years. Like if that ever happens, in a hypothetical universe, the Ultimate Marvel imprint would've lasted even a bit longer and would be a bit different, like maybe the Maker would be either an clone of Reed, or Victor using it as a new alias or make him an new and completely original character in that universe. Now thinking about the Ultimate universe would still outshine the mainstream Marvel universe had Mark Millar and Jeph Loeb hadn't be part of the Ultimate imprint line, not saying they're bad writers or anything, except for Loeb, cause... Ultimatum and stuff... Still can't believe that's it the same guy who made Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory, just web your head around that, folks and... i don't blame him for that...ish...

I love how Marvel's solution to the whole X-Men mythos in the Ultimate Universe was to just make everyone a mutant or enhanced human. Juggernaut? Just a big, strong mutant, no magic bs. Mojo? Not an interdimensional being, just an abnormally large television producer with long, blond hair.

I consider the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be a blend of the Mainstream Universe and the Ultimate Universe, while being its own thing and just focusing on the stuff that made both universes good. Seriously, you have the "grounded in realism", which the UU was always about. And you had the over-arching story-arcs and plot-points from the original universe.

@@mattboy2313 technically, iron man's armor in the comics started to already have the robotic-humanoid feel on the earth 616 continuity in the form of iron man's model 24 armor, so I don't really think The MCU is the first one to do this. Recently finished Ultimates and Ultimates 2 & 3. While I was expecting it, Ultimates’ tone and feel in comparison to classic source material was so jarring compared to Ultimate Spider-Man.I felt like Ultimate Spider-Man was Bendis trying to make a definitive iteration of the character that incorporated decades of stories into one singular series more accessible for new readers. While I had no doubt he was trying to modernize it and make it feel more contemporary, I really thought Bendis was trying (and succeeding) at keeping the heart and integrity of the original character. Thus, Ultimate Spider-Man is a fantastic run for the character that would be a good start for anyone wishing to read about the character Millar’s Ultimates on the other hand, feels way more like an alternate universe where Millar was aware of the original characters’ more optimistic and altruistic traits, but deliberately wrote the characters sans these traits so as to write social commentary and the end result feels more like an Avengers parody.

It is very interesting topic that you decided to explore. I do not think for the most part anyone has really gone into detail nor gone to the lengths that you have to explain The Ultimate's Universe. Now I remember this line very well when it came out...I remember at one point this line was actually being considered to replace the 616 universe as the main marvel universe for us to follow, but as I am sure you will explain in part two the intangibles that lead to this not happening prevented that goal from occurring. I remember at the time really enjoying the Ultimate's volume 1 and 2 in particular for the role Loki/thor played in all of this. I remember really enjoying the idea that this incarnation of Thor may not be all we believe , he may just be a man recovering from a nervous breakdown, who resembles a hero we know..but stole tech and gives off the impression he maybe (how that arch pans out is brilliant). Excellent video and I look forward to part two

Like you, I got really into comics at the time the Ultimate line was launched. And I loved it. Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men and yes, even The Ultimates. I will argue and defend Millars run on Ultimates as a sort of elseworld, taken to the extreme version of the Avengers. A sort of Justice Lords or maybe even Watchmenesque deconstruction of the characters that commented very well on the zeitgeist at the time. Yes, as a team I prefer the 616 version, but I still find these versions of the characters intriguing, if not always likeable. Thor especially I like since that would probably be the reaction if someone came and claimed to be the Norse God of Thunder with matching powers, in a world where superpowers exist. Some would treat him as a messiah, and some as a lunatic. And at the same time, it is extremely entertaining in a wide-screen blockbuster way. But I can see how it isn't everyones cup of tea, especially considering how different the characters are to their main universe counterparts. But if you can look past that, you're in for a ride.

It's funny how some people claim they want something different from the main universe, but when they actually try to do something different everyone complains. I do think after the first Ultimates (Maybe the second) the series took a massive drop in quality. The Ultimates vol. 2, the one with Reed Richards becoming evil, is actually pretty decent too, but everything in between sucks.

Uh no that's not why people hated it. People hated it because it was an extremely poor deconstruction, "If superheroes existed in the real world then THEy would all be jerks!" Watchmen already did this concept infinitely better than the Ultimates And that book is remembered as a classic. It amazes me the mental gymnastics people go through in order to defend Ultimates#1 "You guys only hate it cus it's different!" "It's an alternate universe therefore all the terrible writing and Out of character moments are fine!" Fuck Ultimates (And fuck you too ultimate Hank Pym you wife abusing weirdo)

I wasn't really reading comics yet when the Ultimate universe started and only read a few issues here and there. I just started reading the whole thing from the beginning, so this brief history of how and why it started was really great to watch. Plus it really helps put into words exactly how I'm feeling as I read the stories: Ultimate Spider-Man is really great and relatable and fun, while the Ultimates (and to an extent Ultimate X-Men) is kind of frustrating in its heavy-handedness and extreme departure from the classic versions of the characters. Another great comics history video from Owen, can't wait to watch part 2!

No, wait, it was actually a JC Penny, weird), but I knew instantly this was the best comic I'd ever read. I read every issue through at least the first Sinister Six appearance, by which time I was firmly into reading stories from the Silver Age. I've dabbled with the other Ultimate titles, but Spidey was far and away the best and most consistent book in that lineup. I kinda hope the Miles Morales era of that comic feels like those early days of Peter's.

The problem with The Ultimate Universe - other than 'The A stands for France' - is that it brought Bendis and Millar into Marvel and made them successful, which in Millar's case was (i feel) very little to do with Millar or his work as the next Ultimate book (especially when it was decided to make it Ultimate X-Men) was guaranteed to be - at least initially - a sales success off the back of Ultimate Spider-Man's. But the success made bringing the two over to the 616 titles a sensible idea and thus we had years of them running roughshod over the main Marvel universe turning in horrible and/or or lazy books and derailing characters left, right and centre, with Bendis finding no corner of the MU that he couldn't make mediocre, and being given (for a good portion of this time) given very little editorial interference - which is how we end up with things like the mess with the Beyonder or the Izenfuther etc. As an alternate universe Millar's horrible, cynical take on the Avengers and Bendis playing fast and loose with continuity is fine because ultimately it isn't the Avengers or the Marvel continuity of old, the problem was them being allowed to do this sort of thing where it was a problem (IMO)

They reimagined and modernized the characters for a new audience without making it overly complicated, unlike the new 52 which made thinks way to complex and confusing and would sometimes leave certain continuity in (like batman's 75 year history condensed into 5).

I love the X-Men and Fantastic Four uniforms the universe had, which were also temporarily carried onto a lot of Marvel Earth 616 merchandise of the early 2000s, as well as the 616 Marvel Adventures/Marvel Age Fantastic Four books for younger readers of the early 2000s!

I read volume one of ultimate spiderman and ultimate xmen recently. Spiderman was a great modern (at the time) retelling of spidermans origin that actually holds up pretty well. Xmen was decent, and the first story holds up alright say for a few weird things like wolverine x jean, but definitely isnt as good as the spiderman in this universe. And knowing what happens to each series later on, spiderman seems to continue as a fun retelling whereas xmen continues to make very odd choices that dont vibe

Going to be honest never “read” the ultimate comics, Read articles about it watched videos of it both reviews like this and stories retellings on channels like comicstorian. But I heard that the original issues of the ultimate Spiderman line with similar to that of a TV show pilot so it occurs to me that ultimate Spiderman might be like reading a TV series that you would watch on Showtime or CW and ABC. However the Waze one ultimate Spiderman book that I’ve actually read ultimate Deadpool perhaps oh look through my book app and try to read more of ultimate Spiderman

Ultimate Spider Man is the best run ever. Hands down. You cannot stop reading it. I don't even like SM that much, give me Thor or Sentry but wow, that series was incredible. With Miles it continued to be amazing but now that he's in the 616 universe it's pure crap by comparison. Marvel will regret losing Bendis.

Addressing political issues in comics is noting new and can be done super awesome and should be, because representation matters and people need mythic figures to look up to. But god they really made every single person in The Ultimates and like half of the X-men just the most unpleasant characters to watch sometimes.

Read monthly comics growing up. Never quit reading occasional graphic novels or rereading my old collection. But I didn't come back to monthly comics till around the fresh start era of Marvel. So I missed the ultimate phase of marvel. Sometimes you only have to do one mistake to ruin something. I know about Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch in the ultimate universe. So, yeah. There are soooo many comics I haven't read yet. I can probably read until I die and never run out of comics to read....without ever reading anything from the ultimate era. Tbh, it's not just the Pietro and Wanda stuff. It also seems every time I say something I don't like about the mcu, someone replies, "but that's comicbook accurate from ultimate marvel" So much of the ultimate line is part of the leftover 90s vibe of "let's be edgy"

The difference between Miller And Bendis is charisma and lightness, Miller seems to constantly trying to bash the audience with shock value and violence, and it's okay, I do appreciate his work, but his dark approach can get really old. Bendis seems to take his time better and shows is the hearts of the characters, but Bendis does put some crazy and controversial spins here and there, just different styles.

Three things that lead to today's failure of Marvel Comics" 1) In the 1990s, the "writing the Marvel way" came to a head as the artist realized the art was more important than the story and the writing, leading to them holding Marvel hostage to bad art, then to the lost of good(ish) artists to Image, then the giving their main titles to Image to publish. 2) The response of the writers thinking they are what makes comics work leading to the ultimate Marvel line, which had mixed results but tried to ignore Marvel continuity and decent stories where ever it could, moving to a post-Marvel type story, while leaving the remaining good artists at Marvel to fall into the ultimate Marvel line if they wanted to stay at Marvel, meaning they no longer were drawing the classic Marvel characters they has wanted to draw. 3) The collapse of the Marvel stable as new writers and artists with little talent and mis-management of the direction of the company lead to sudden changes to the classic main universe, legacy characters at the time people watching the movies would have sought the originals, and finally the practices of little editorial oversight, over politicization, high prices with low quality product and poor shipping practices, leading to the collapse of sales and the shifting of a major character to be published by a different publisher (sound familiar?).

I wonder, If they had actually gotten Freddie Prinze Jr. to play Captain America in the MCU like they tried to get him to play Cap for The Ultimates movie in the Ultimate movie, would they have gotten Sarah Michelle Gellar to play Black Widow instead of Scarlett Johansson? It would've been fitting since Joss Whedon directed the first Avengers movie. At least Ultimate Nick Fury got his wish to be played by Samuel L. Jackson. Also, I can't believe they made that crack about Robert Downey Jr. in the Ultimate Comics several years before the first Iron Man movie even came out.

Ultimate X-men was the first superhero comic series I've ever followed, later I found the ultimate run to be awesome I mean nothing was as "uncool" as the avengers until this comics. Later I picked up Ultimate Spider-Man and while I didn't get into the first few volumes today I'd say it's the more consistant and compelling spider-man run I've read. Then Ultimate 3 happened and even the might of Joe Mad (or maybe because of him since even with more classic storytelling it was a complete split from Bryan Hitch realistic style) could save this mess, then ultimatum I mean wow yeah... that was really something... that happened. But yeah they weren't wrong with the core concept of soft rebooting the Ultimate universe I remember dropping ultimate x-men 'cause it was already too convoluted and cringy way before Ultimatum came out (admittedly 13 year old me was kind of naive to wait a cohesive long running story from books switching creative team regularly). Anywaaay Ultimatum was bad but... THEN some years ago (maybe eight years?) I picked up an issue of "ultimate universe" (which was the last remaining "ultimate" title here in France) and while at that time I had grown very fond of the classic marvel universe when I read this issue depicting America post Steve Rogers presidency with Reed Richards being the big bad menace looming over earth and the united states being divided in so much factions like the Sentinel nation or something... It felt right and exciting. 'Cause that's the kind of impact super powered races, individuals and alien invasions every other day would have on the world or maybe not but the world wouldn't be the same at all after 10 years of Superhero sheananigans going on. It was still messy but... In the end I'm so glad we got a line of comics which was ballsy like that. They got over their head with it a lot of time searching for buzz but... It still felt more realistic and lived in than most of the big two title ever did. Thanks for the video, sorry for rambling, can't wait to hear your take on Ultimatum and all those... mishapps this line got through. Stay fresh!

6:45 Jemas was right about that. The direct market has been killing the market for years. Distribution not the arbitrary quality within decided the fate of the comic They should've had an ultimate marvel magazine and serialized them that way. Getting comics out of shops is the way to go Hell having the issues collected into neat and easy to read collections made it a success, but marvel never learned the lesson that makes manga sell so well I don't like Millar at all but he was close. Comics don't compete with movies and videogames but they compete with Manga On the problems with comics distribution spacetwinks.itch.io/the-problems-with-comics Apparently there was an ultimate marvel magazine but I never saw them when I was younger. Anyway it should've been bigger

@@OwenLikesComics I mean, sure, I just don't get why. Iron Man's side is framed as clear villains which defeats the purpose of an ambiguous driving question; everyone is written out of character; most of the conflict is forced - Maria Hill tries to order/tranq Cap FOR NO REASON based on a law THAT DIDN'T COME INTO FORCE YET, Spidey publicly unmasks himself putting his family into obvious and predictable jeopardy FOR NO REASON and it was bad enough to require a reboot of the character; Thor clone is allowed into the field to kill Goliath FOR NO REASON as it's later clearly shown Reed had the tech to prevent that death beforehand and simply ?didn't think to put it in? before unleashing killer cyborg on his friends... And even in social commentary, what is the book REALLY about? Gun control? Vigilantes? Civil liberties? War on terror? It uses a lot of loaded and politically charged imagery for sure, but so what? What does it *actually* say about anything? For the record it is ALSO just my opinion, exactly as valid (no more or less) than yours.

Apologies if my reply came across as prickish, I read it back and it wasn't my intention. I agree the book has an abundance of issues (as does a lot of Millar's work), but it is regarded as one of Marvel's flagship events (hence why I mentioned it). Honestly, my issues with the book is a video itself, I assume Millar wanted to tackle the PATRIOT Act and the concept of civil liberties vs. freedom, but like a lot of his work, it does at time feel a little mishandled.
