A fur traders rendezvous was in progress as we descended from the blockhouses of the infantry post Fort McKeen. There we met with an enlisted man who explained something of the arms and uniform of a 7th Cavalry trooper before taking us to the barracks located on one side of Cavalry Square at Fort Abraham Lincoln, North Dakota. On another side of the square, Officer's Row, stands the Custer House. We enjoyed stepping back to the year 1875 for a guided look around.
We then took Greyhound buses to Hardin, Montana, via Billings along the way we were able view Pompey's Pillar on the banks of the Yellowstone. This of course had a Custer connection, although from the Summer Campaign of 1873 rather than the one in 1876.
Taking lodgings in Hardin we then had our own date with destiny at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. We hadn't come all the way from England to view it from a tour bus so we walked the 4.50 miles Reno/Benteen Battlefield to Last Stand Hill. Enjoy it here if you can bear the out of tune singing along the way! Join me. Will you?

My wife and I drove around the battlefield in September of 2016. It was one of my bucket list. The people that owned the museum in Garryowen were really nice. We purchased the documentary by Chris Hoffert called “Contested Ground “. A book came with it titled “Little Bighorn, Voices From A Distant Wind. Both were great. I would go back out there again if my health was a little better. I live in upstate New York so probably won’t make it, but I’m fortunate to have did it once.

That's the proper way to travel that country. Must be an amazing memory for you. I only wish we had scheduled more time at the Fort. I wanted to try and find 'Picnic Rock' which Mrs Custer describes in one of her books as behind the Custer House.

A famous confederate General once said the key to victory is to get there first with the most, Indians did just that!

Lol. It would have been good to have started the trail after a night in the barracks. Maybe Fort Abraham Lincoln could bring them to life by allowing people to stay. Dunno whether I woul denjoy the breakfast though. Hardtack all round!

I visted the Battlefield in July 2017. Great facility and people. Custer was my hero as a boy . I later discovered the truth about this event, I now consider Custer somewhat of a Dildo and instead honor the Indians.

The Leftists ideologues destroyed and distorted American history. Read for yourself. Dont let these haters have you hate your own country. Think for yourself.
