the volume of work the stones did will still be listened to in a hundred. years, consider in the future listening to Mothers little helpers as a song to listen to. another great choice of tunes.

The Hells Angels likely saved the life of people, including the Rolling Stones. The man pulled out a gun, but the Hells Angels member used a knife to end the threat.

Several people, including the Stones manager, reiterate exactly what you said. It was a violent, disastrous festival, but without the Angels, Meredith Hunter would have killed far more people, possibly even a member of the Stones, as he was waving his gun toward the stage.

This is not about music, it has got nothing to do with the Rolling Stones, it’s about violence, too much drugs and basically sensation. Okay, in a way it’s historical but not what you want to see. Good and honest reaction from you!

It's well worth watching the entire Gimme Shelter movie. It's a great film. It's not only about the Altamont free concert, but the later stages of the Stones legendary 1969 U.S tour, which also provided their Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out live album from MSG. The original studio version is on the Stones 1966 album, Aftermath. It's a classic. The original has a totally different groove, thanks to a incredibly funky bass part courtesy of Bill Wyman. Brian Jones' marimbas and Charlie Watts' drums are the other standouts.

There are a lot of books about Altamont, but the best two are by people who were there, Stanley Booth, and Sam Cutler, who include detailed accounts along with a lot of other fascinating information about The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, and others.

It actually shows that guy getting stabbed on this very clip. At the very end, look for the guy in the lime green suit. You can see the Hells Angel plunge the knife into his head. If youd wached one more minute of this clip, the videographer slows down the clip for Mick.

I think most of the stuff went down when they were playing "Sympathy for the Devil", that's the clip I always see from this show. The Hell's Angels were hired for security and someone got stabbed in the crowd. Oh yeah, late 60's were volatile times in America, it's amazing nothing like this happened at Woodstock, but it happened here instead. Drugs, hippies, Hell's angels. Bad mix.

The Altamont concert was a huge mistake from planning through execution. The people who planned it wanted to appease the Hell's Angels in order to prevent any bad incidences from occurring so they basically hired the group to provide security, thinking they wouldn't cause any trouble. They were wrong. From the very started of the concert the Hells Angels pushed people around, and if anyone pushed back they were in a fight. Several people were injured. It was a nightmare, and the Stones regretted everything about it. I don't think the recording is very good either - for a song like Under My Thumb the original studio version is much better,

Like The Stones ….Never liked this song. Even back in the mid-60’s, when I was a teen, I found it so demeaning to the woman. “Only Speaks when she’s spoken to”. YUCK. And that was before feminism was even a thing. Other than the lyrics, I’ve always liked the instrumentation of the song.

You need to stop reacting to live versions of songs as your first listen. Bands spend enormous amounts of money on producing songs in the studio to get them the way they want them to sound and almost no live version is going to come close to the studio version. ESPECIALLY Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Jimmy Page spent days putting those songs together to be listened to on the studio album, and he was a genius at it. But this video (the one you're reacting to, not your reaction) is a great example. It's garbage. It's a terrible version of the song, in no way representative of the original studio version and the video is bad too. And the sound is bad. Studio versions first. Live versions after. The only exceptions would be songs from the Albums Time Fades Away by Neil Young and Running on Empty by Jackson Browne because a both of those albums contain all new songs recorded live and there aren't studio versions.
