We designed and built a boiler for our house in 1984. We used hot water heater elements and standard plumbing nipples, so it cost almost nothing. THe circulation pump in 1/5th hp. We designed a thermostat system, but it took 8 hours to heat the slab and 3 days for it to cool down, so we manually regulate.

We call them drip groove’s. It stops the capillary hydrostatic action of water travel. Shit I had to pull out my old tech books to look that explanation up. Wise words from an old contractor my father were “ Always expect the unexpected when doing a renovation” that’s what will govern the time it takes, the cost and the finished product. Always good to leave a good amount of contingency to allow for the unforeseen when doing a renovation, because it’s not the contractor doing the work, it’s the task needed to be done on the renovation which tells the contractor what’s involved in having it done. Eye opening experience for me in the building methods used in the States compared to Australia. Especially the flow and return hot water system for your under floor heating. Keep up the good work guys.

Years ago, I had considered replacing my tank water heater with on-demand type. Hearing the issues with water calcifying in copper tubing was great information to have. I like to research lots before deciding. Because of emergency situation (isn't that usually the case), I had my brother's replace it with another tank.

Remodeling is fun. When I was doing it in Stillwater we never knew what we would find, from trying to run a wire in what turned out to be the original log cabin to plumbing in stacked wood walls. then there were the some very sketch wiring, to original gas light runs that were just caped off and still live., Cross the river in Wisc. I had a farmer ask me to look at the barn. he had sparks when it rained. Turned out an out let was wired with barbed wire. Learned to never bid and only work per hour.

Barn wired with barbed wire? That's taking frugality/efficiency way to far. It's a miracle the barn didn't burn.

When we moved into the house my Dad bought in 1960 it was 100 years old and still had gas lighting copper lines on the second floor with no sealed caps on the light outlets. Just pushed on caps. The line was still live so one of the first things my Dad did was go down in the basement and cap off that line after he had the gas company cone out and turn off the gas as he didn't trust the gas inlet valve which he also replaced as it was original not code allowed. He even removed all pipe as far as he could going up stairs including the line that fed to 1st floor. The house even still had double push button light switches upstairs and cloth wrapped wiring. The garage was originally a carriage house with a hay loft around all 4 sides still in it which became excellent storage on 3 sides and a Pigeon coop on the front. We were remodeling that house a room at a time until my teens. I was 6 when we moved in. Try cutting 100 year old old growth oak. We went thru saw blades like you wouldn't believe.

I can believe it. Saw an old log cabin made of oak defeat a construction company's attempt to destroy it. They finally found someone who understood wood who told them it would have to be sawn apart peg by peg. The company gave it to the city for the city's pioneer park it had been one of the1st settlers cabin well over 100 years old.

Wow, plumbing has come a long way since my Grandfather's day. Back in the 1950's I would watch him melt lead ingots to make joints secure. As usual you guys are entertaining and informative. Hope you are planning a full hours tour when you are done. Hope your weather improves.

Yep, I totally know what you are talking about. I bought some land, set up a five year plan. Now I am on year 6 of the land and finishing year 2 of the 5 year plan. Did not figure a pandemic and supply shortages into the plan so you have to be flexible when you do things like this. Now things to be progressing a little better and we are making headway. Some things are still hard to get and some contractors do take longer to get started due to weather and getting held up on other jobs.

Matt, The Sasquatch was still here. Amazing plumbing, warter heating and floor heating. Hope no leaks (even after air pressure tests). Did Mike make you a diagram and leave you instructions on how to operate the valves and control the manifolds! Ohhhh…. Boy…. he needs to be on speed dial…haha! Donavan, I bet you hate when the plumbers and electricians come behind you meaking lots of holes close together and even Big holes in your support walls and weight bearing truss or beams???

Yeah the best laid plans of mice and men... remodels can get away from you with material delays, change orders, workers getting sick, waiting on subs, and surprises during demo. That's why hard finish dates and rushed jobs balloon the cost (unless you have a warehouse to line up all materials , line up subs, and nail down the scope of work before the start date).

great saw...great job with the paintng,,i hope you dont have hard water there...i dont drink mine,,,just for cleaning and washing clothes,,its city water,,,its tastes like hell..i buy spring water,,and its going up..1.35 a gal here now..thanks to our great leader..how do you turn the water off..haaa..wow what a room..this is a first for me...i think i seen one in a school once,haa so you dont use a hot water tank....we have very large hot water tanks now,,you can take 4 showers at once,,and never loose hot water....but it has its own electric meter.......love that camera...tv really..haa...be careful you all

Matthew, I am not a professional plumber, but I am 70 years old and have a little common sense. If you go to 14:71 and look at the drain for the kitchen sink you will see that the vent stack is five feet downstream. By the time the vacuum is broken it will have already emptied the P-trap. You could install one of those under counter vents or go left five feet to clear the windows and put a vent there. Just my thoughts, for what they are worth. Art

With 2” drain pipe that will not be a problem. In the past few years all drain pipe is now minimum is 2” if it was only 1 1/2” might be a problem
