Join dancers of The Royal Ballet as they rehearse their 2018/19 Season opener, Kenneth MacMillan's Mayerling. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/mayerling
Mayerling is based on the true story of the deaths of Crown Prince Rudolf and his teenage mistress Mary Vetsera in 1889. This dark and intense ballet was created for The Royal Ballet in 1978 and is regarded by many as among Kenneth MacMillan's finest works. Orchestrated and arranged by John Lanchbery, the music of Franz Liszt sweeps the story to its intense conclusion, and sumptuous designs by Nicholas Georgiadis bring to life the formal, oppressive world of the Austro-Hungarian court.
The large-scale crowd and court scenes show the whole Company off at its dramatic finest. But it is MacMillan's choreography for Rudolf, one of the most technically and emotionally demanding roles in the repertory for male dancers, that makes this ballet so iconic. Rudolf's emotional decline is charted through daring and visceral pas de deux with his mother, his wife and Mary Vetsera - choreography that pushes classical ballet to its limits.

This is wonderful. I consider Kenneth MacMillan as one of the coolest choreographers who unfortunately is no longer among us to continue delighting with his wonderful talent. I love his works like Manon, Romeo and Juliet, but Mayerling is a work that never ceases to amaze me for his wonderful way of telling us a story so dark and dramatic at the same time wonderful. Musically it is extraordinary thanks to another talent like John Lanchbery who has managed to interpret as only he can do this magnificent work. I love The Royal Ballet. Pure talent. This is without doubt First level. Thank you for bringing such beauty and talent to the world.

love the rehearsals, but i think they should have had more side content to fill in for the exhausted dancers giving them more time to catch their breath. I remember other rehearsals where they had a segment with the costume designer, that would have been great to "waste time" for the dancers recovery.

Francis Drake This was actually more like a real rehearsal. Usually they only show snippets of each piece in these videos, whereas in an actual rehearsal, the dancers are going hard for a longer time without breaks.

Isn't Steven McRae still recovering from his injury ? Or is he already performing again ? The clip i saw sime days ago showed him doing physiotherapy, appearing incredible thin to me, especially his legs and upper arms seemed a lot more fragile compared to when he trained for Alice and other roles. Edit: according to an article on Oct.11th, he was off stage for ten months, but was performing with Sarah again on October 15 th...

Speaking about rehearsal. Just a suggestion: the dancers of such extraordinary level don't need a coach as much as they need a video recording. What is going on during a rehearsal? Both dancers and a coach need to rely on coaches' memory. At the end he was tiered, he was exhausted, and he could not remember any suggestions for the female dancer. If it would be a video recording, then researching together with dancers, a coach could be much more helpful, pointing at particular places on the video, giving a suggestion.

The dancers at the Royal Ballet do watch video recordings in preparation for thier roles. The coaches (who have usually danced the role before) help them make it thier own, instead of just mimicking people on a screen. The dancers certainly aren't perfect; they take classes all day to improve thier technique before they even start to rehearse.

Amazing dancers, but no connection with each other or the acting. They need to listen to the coaching. He's just doing steps. This is a madly passionate piece. Come on!

Not a fan of Ryoichi, looking back Ive loved everything I saw from the royal ballet, performances or rehearsals, vids of any kind etc. All but a few things. After this rehearsal and really disliking his rapid mix of under/overexpressiveness I went back and checked what else I didnt like, a Romeo and Juliet rehearsal, a Frankenstein rehearsal, Leontes in the last livestream of the winters tale.. and its all him in narrative roles.. Now he cant be a bad dancer, I mean hes made principal, so I dug deeper and realized Ive seen him in other things, most recently corybantic games, and maybe not overtly liked him, but didnt mind him, didnt get distracted by him. I feel abstract works are his forte, where the pure physical aspect really shines. Maybe hell win me over one day, but if hes dancing the cinema stream, Im skipping it. also this entire rehearsal seemed a little below royal ballet standard in terms of... the entire thing? Like everything was a bit less than before, it really has been a long day for everyone I guess, hats off to all the hard working artists and creators! =)

I agree, I think he should practice more gestures and acting 🎭 in order to transmit more feelings because his face was the same ans his moves were really square and stiff...

I think you're onto something. He seems to be zig zagging between under-acting and over-acting. With practice, he will eventually find a happy middle ground! And, in all fairness, this is a rather vulnerable and intimate role which many people would find uncomfortable to portray. But he is clearly a disciplined person and I think he will get there!

I don't like the Japanese dancer. His face is impassive, with not much expression coming through. The coach's remark to the Japanese dancer, "Be more involved," says it all. Where's Edward Watson or Alexander Campbell when you need them?

I've seen Chinese, Korean, and Japanesse memes of their comedians that would put Jim Carry's face to shame! It is not that their faces "can't" be that expressive... but socially they are discouraged from practicing that expressiveness. Novice Western dancers can have "stuck smile syndrome" too - but its usually trained out long before the professional level.
