Giselle is the classic ballet of the Romantic era - and, for the dancer performing the title role, one of the greatest challenges in the repertory. Peter Wright’s production, a classic itself, perfectly achieves the dual aspects of the ballet, moving from the naivety of young love between Giselle and Albrecht in the village setting of Act I to the ethereal Wilis in Act II’s eerie moonlit forest. Rich in vivid character detail and poignant depth of feeling, Giselle is a reminder of ballet’s power to move and thrill.

Does anyone know if it is common for the role of Myrtha being cast with „only“ corps de ballet-members? Not in the least saying they aren’t deserving, I am just curious. The role seems quite a feat and there might be higher ranking dancers waiting to do it? Is this a sign for promotion looming? Genuinely curious.

I think Kevin O’Hare is a director that likes to give opportunities for soloist roles to Corps & younger dancers when possible. I think it’s a good idea, allows them to grow, learn stage presence and a sense of character.
@mathildewesendonck7225
@mathildewesendonck7225 2 жыл бұрын
I think Monica Mason was given this role when she was really young, and for some reason it seems to be a tradition to give the „Myrtha“ role to someone very young at the Royal Ballet. (there is another rehearsal video of a very young Claudia Dean 😊) In Russia, they usually choose a very tall Myrtha with great stage presence and facial expressions (like Maria Bulanova at the Mariinski, or Alyona Kovaleva at the Bolshoi). My Russian ballet teacher says that it is really important that Myrtha is taller than Giselle and almost as tall as Albrecht to appear intimidating. And she says Myrtha must have amazing bourrees. That makes sense

I’m surprised for the role of Myrtha to be awarded to a young member of the Corp. since Giselle herself is supposed to be so young, lithe, slight, etc you really get a chance to cast an “older” member like a first soloist or Principal dance. Since Myrtha is a Queen, and the leader, you’d expect a physical contrast, for starters. Also, Myrtha is an incredibly difficult role. It takes preternatural strength and huge stamina. The jumps are absolutely relentless. Obviously any member of the RB has the capability to dance just about any role. One often sees Myrtha’s “assistants” assigned to higher corps - almost to soloist but not quite. They are usually young members of the company. Not to drive home the point but it’s really an opportunity for an older ballerina who no longer has the look of a Juliet or a Sugar Plum fairy.
@l.alexandra5871
@l.alexandra5871 2 жыл бұрын
Ulanova was definitely one of the all time greatest Giselles. This is really a ballerina’s ultimate role. Act II is the most incredibly difficult role - the famous développe à la seconde is the most exposed step in a ballerina’s career. The nuances is critical. Giselle has to really look like she’s floating - keeping her head still (literally) through many steps is very important but then it is really a bigger challenge to show emotions and draw out the long lines that are essential to ballet at the same time. Ballet is so much micromanaging - it’s incredible how much goes into just one step.

Watching this beautiful rehearsal made me think that Julia, although a marvelous technical dancer never understood what Dame Monica was trying to teach her. @l.alexandra5871

It’s almost impossible for me to imagine someone not knowing these “characters” as the story of Giselle is so ingrained in the minds of all ballet lovers. It’s like saying you don’t get a sense of Hamlet. To be fair to you, these were pretty weak opportunities for an open and videoed rehearsal. Usually you’d have a rehearsal that isn’t so fragmented whereby you’re not getting a shape of the story. These rehearsals were extremely technical with very little real dancing. Also none of the dancers really suited their roles in my opinion

@@l.alexandra5871i think they meant getting a “sense” of a character is the embodiment of it. I think your first few sentences makes what the original commenter said wrong but I agree with them honestly. Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles and madness in this world today, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. Christ says in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.] - (AMPLIFIED version) NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus. Xxx

An awful lot of distracting movement in the back ground, when Olga is setting the scene at the beginning. Extremely rude and inappropriate.

“Good Luck on your debut.” Big, big faux pas. The presenter should have said “MERDE, on your debut.”

Only Americans say „Merde“ 😉 I know that the „merde“ has a long tradition, but for my European ears it sounds like swearing, you might as fell say „f…. your debut“

what a pity that Jasmine was wearing that pink top....even if it's a rehearsal I would have worn something less sexy and modern....just to tune it to the atmosphere and topic.......am I too sensitive?

yes it's the same material and cut of any leotard. they rehearse multiple different works sometimes in one day. also matts wearing a striped t shirt which doesn't exactly scream giselle, so that should apply to him too. and her name is yasmine!

I agree with you. I hate this leo for a rehearsal of Giselle. The neckline is like a racing suit. It just looks too athletic and makes her arms look far less like Giselle and too much like an athlete. The colour is too strong, too.
