To be fair though, if you're a budget gamer, then PCIe 4.0 (or more so 5.0) x8 will be absolutely plenty for whatever graphics card you're getting. As an example - difference between 3.0 x16 and 4.0 x16, with top of our current generation cards, is but a couple of fps. Half the bandwidth of the port (x8, 4.0), and throw in a mid-tier card.. won't be any issues there. Especially not at PCIe 5.0. Not to mention that some mid-tier cards comes with only x8 lanes these days, such as the 4060/Ti & RX 7600. At x8 3.0 it might start hurting though - but not really any modern systems coming out with only 3.0 support any longer. Though in general I do believe that consumer parts have way too few PCIe lanes. Would be lovely if they'd jump from the default 20-28 (depending on platform) to 32-48. I'd almost say it wouldn't matter for consumers, but, in the future of NVMe SSDs most likely entirely replacing SATA based SSDs.. we're going to need some more lanes, or at least bigger/cheaper drives. For me? I mostly just want them to add more lanes so I can re-use my hardware as server hardware after upgrading my PC. 😅

8700G is simply not worthwhile for gamers. It is for someone who needs strong CPU and games occasionally on the side.

The only APU that got that right was 2200G which also gave AMD trouble cause it's performance was neck on neck with 2400G

yeah but obviously then 8700g would get less sales. And its not that much more expensive to produce. So it wouldnt make sense from Amds perspective. 8500g is still nice, since its cheaper than 7600, almost same price as 7500f.

Thats why you have to get the BEST APU and not get a Graphics card, THEN upgrade with a decent graphics card

@@lmchua8644 I hate to say this, but that's not how chip manufacturing works. An expensive chip doesn't necessarily cost more to produce than a cheap chip, at all. An entire line of chips is made from the same or similar dies, which are cut apart and then binned into different chips. The profitability of a chip company is based on "average selling price", which is the average price of all the chips. So if they can get $1000 for the top chip and $100 for the cheapest chip, and the average of all sales comes out to $500, that's their "Average Selling Price". Then they divide their R&D and Production up to see if they made a profit. The price of things in the computer market has nothing to do with production cost, in general. It just doesn't work that way.

@@lmchua8644 The Z1 Extreme is a 30W mobile chip, the 8700G is 65W desktop chip, able to clock higher and achieve much better performance due to the added power budget. The 8500G and lower are using a hybrid CPU core setup, Zen 4 and Zen 4c. No mobile chips from AMD are using this yet. As another comment points out, the 8000G series is not just mobile Ryzen chip in AM5 packaging, there's a lot more to it than that.

@@kozad86 The Z1 chip (non extreme) is also 2 x "Zen4", 4 x "Zen4c". The 8500g and Z1 are both AMD Phoenix dies. They are identical chips other than the TDP they are configured at.

@@RandomGaminginHD That's going to be an interesting one. It's a 1+3 setup on the CPU side so anything that wants more than single-threaded performance is going to suffer.

Maybe most other reviewers focused on the two "big" ones because the 8600G isn't that much more expensive than 8500G. And it offers the much bigger GPU which is (for me) the point of the "G" Ryzens plus it has more lanes if a GPU is added. Afaik it has 8 lanes for a GPU slot which fits the smaller graphics cards like 6600 and 4060(Ti)

​@@jochenkraus7016It depends, in most countries 30 bucks is a great difference because of currency exchange. 30 or 40 dollars is a lot in South America, India, etc... If you want to use a dedicated graphics card, 8500g is good if you can get it in a good prixe.

I don't understand why people would want that though. At that point why not just get a cheap mini PC and hook it to the back of your monitor? If you're looking long-term this APU doesn't really leave you with an upgrade path that makes sense unless you replace it altogether which defeats the purpose. The graphics performance is only about half that of the 8600G and if you want to use a dGPU, it'll be artificially limited to 4 lanes which can affect performance especially in CPU-intensive esports games. So no matter how you look at it you're better off going with an 8600G or 7500F/7600 instead. If they hadn't cut the iGPU down so drastically compared to the 8600G it would make more sense.

It is not. Frankly, if you want office PC go with Intel. Much worse graphical performance, but office PCs are not meant for gaming and Intel solution is cheaper.

I don't know, If that's the amount of money you can save then it would be better to aim lower and go like 12100F and a low end GPU, or buy used. If they couldn't save up a bit more to get a better rig (like 8600G or some non-G CPU with an actual GPU) I wouldn't hold my breath for this possible future savings. Most likely they'll get stuck on spending way too much money on hyper-optimized memory and AM5 motherboard just to end up with trash FPS.

@@PAcifisti I agree. I was just rattling off two scenarios that I could imagine for the 8500G. Honestly, the i3-12100 or going last gen AM4 with the R5 4600G would be better options than going AM5 if cash strapped.

I doubt anyone gaming oriented would buy this CPU, because it would be cheaper to go with lets say r5 5500 , DDR4 memory and Chinese RX 580. AMD missed a mark with these new iGPUs , because there is only tiny niche of those would be willing to pay the price for lackluster graphics and limited upgradability.

A comment above yours suggested an older cpu with an RX 6600. Looked up the prices on a 3600/6600 combo, and it would be about $150 more but the performance absolutely mogs the APU in this video.

@@rhysm.5915 My thinking is more along the lines for people holding off upgrading, or thinking it's too far/unaffordable/unrealistically hanging on for too long. So, less about how to better it, more what can now be considered the entry door. I've a bugbear with delivery of most testings as the data tends to be in isolation, or in correlation to last gen... those with older hardware is very sizable. Take the STEAM survey results; 6 core CPUs of sub 3.5GHz, and the 1650 and 1060 take 2 of the top 4 spots...

Minimum and maximum frame rate are bungled and statistically insignificant . Most important are average and 1% low . Even 0.1% is flawed unless you run very long benchmarks.

Radeons 6000 are PCIe 4.0 cards. Famously, the 6400 and 6500 XT only have 4 lanes of those, which could result in bottlenecks when paired with a mobo or CPU that only supports PCIe 3.0. The 6600 (and up) wasn't affected by this problem, because it has 8 lanes, which is enough even at 3.0 speeds.

@@TheDoomerBlox Not sure what you mean by hilariously cheap. It's a $120 board that's missing a bunch of features including 4 RAM slots and with very barebones I/O. On AM4 you could have picked up a board that wasn't feature-barren like the B450M Pro4 or the B550M Pro SE for $80 ever since 2-3 years ago. AM5 is absolutely not a very affordable platform these days. Inexpensive motherboards are very hard to come by and absolutely barren in terms of features and DDR5 is still a fair bit more expensive than DDR4 for a budget mid-range 16 or 32GB kit. Anyhow, this APU makes very little sense. The price is not cheaper enough than the 8600G to justify having a cut down CPU and PCIe connectivity as well a GPU that's only half as good (8600G has 8 CUs, 8500G only has 4) and if the point is getting into AM5 as cheap as possible it makes more sense to get the 7500F or 7600 instead. This in no man's land.

@@TheDoomerBlox Its cheaper than launch but I would argue on a buget AM4 is still the way to go for now, especially when you factor in overall cost. you could get a 5700X3D build for around the same price as an entry level 8500g build. And the 5700X3D offers you more cores. the 8500g is a step in the right direction, Especially if the price of AM5 boards and ddr5 ram comes down in price just a bit more.
