As much as I love Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana, but Raven definitely broke barriers and she deserves as much credit as Miley. Don't get me wrong, Miley has made a lot of impact and carried Disney on her back for years, but Raven is the Blueprint and paved the way for black women like, Coco, China, Keke, Skai Jackson, Monique Coleman and the lists goes on! Also if it weren't for her, The Cheetah Girls wouldn't be successful!

Yes but her mom is her manager so that's a good thing about her career! She is way more talented than what Disney can do for her and Disney would have just corrupted her like a corrupted all the other kids in the industry! I think she's better off because now she can have her sanity and grow up to be a respectful adults! Most of those kids that grew up in the industry and continue to be in the industry they have so many mental problems in don't know how to cope with it and they just get so fixated on drugs and try to escape! So I think her mom did the right thing by withdrawing her from the entertainment industry! A lot of these places they have like 1-2, maybe 3, stylists for the entire cast. So I’m guessing that a lot of the hiring managers thought or felt like hiring a black stylist to do other folks hair just wouldn’t ‘work’ or some dumb shit. Also, it’s not that every black stylist will know how to style Natural black hair. For a long time I had a stylist who only knew how to braid my hair or perm it, and turns out she permed my hair and burned it all of I had to chop my hair off and start again. So black stylists don’t always mean knowledge because unfortunately a lot of them have to go to these white esthetician schools that don’t teach you anything about black hair. It’s a super complex issue unfortunately, but I’m glad some change is being made in a positive direction.

The irony of raven being labeled as “too big” is that there was a whole episode of the show focused on how the industry body shamed and puts up a fake image on what women should look like. In the episode Raven’s dress gets featured on a magazine, but she doesn’t get to model it because she didn’t fit their image and she was replaced with a skinny white model instead. The episode ends with raven taking a stand and go on the catwalk to model her design despite what others say. It’s sad that that Lesson went over the executives heads

I read somewhere that in Sister Sister, Ray was originally written as a millionaire living in a mansion and owned multiple limousines and other luxury vehicles, but the producers reduced his character to an upper middle class man with a limousine business because at the time they thought Ray being black and wealthy just didn't make sense. Shame on them.
@summertimejay3157
@summertimejay3157 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it was a bad idea (well, obviously because it turned out to be a success). Personally, I appreciate that it was middle class family rather than a wealthy high class family. Statistically back in the 90s, the average black household was low class and this was also during or little after the crack cocaine epidemic. I believe having a middle class black family on tv had a more positive impact for black families, because it looked like an attainable goal a true representation that did exist for some middle class black families. Also, it showed to their white counterparts that black people can “function” within “their” society and shouldn’t be perceived as a threat. Watching those tv shows made me believe I could have what I saw on tv, it just seemed realistic. And I can bet if the show did run with a high class wealthy family, it wouldn’t have been such a success. At that time, it would appear to sell a fantasy, cause the average black person was not living like that unless their profession was a doctor (Cosby show), lawyer, etc. And I don’t think black people were interested in fantasies at that time, considering they had to deal with real issues. There is a time and place for everything. People are not born running. They crawl, stand, walk, jog, and then run. It just seemed that was the right move to make.

@@radioactive_baby0706 thats not why none of them had natural hair. Most if not all black actors didnt have natural hair, even before disney, why? because the trend and standards for "black beauty" were still weave and relaxers. The natural movement is still pretty "recent" meaning for along time both black and white media didnt see the need to learn or know how to care for "black hair" unless it was loosely curled or straight. Apart from that all they needed to know how to do was how to place a wig on their deads. Skai is probably one of the first black disney starts to have had natural kinky hair even before disney

Thanks for the video and effort. I'm not a fan of these Disney shows but I'm a fan of yours and how you so thoughtfully articulated these issues. Colourism is an issue in Hollywood, the world and even within our own communities. The amount of people of different ethnicities using whitening skin cream makes me sad, not sad in them but the pressures they feel. We are all naturally beautiful just as we are born, our various skin tones, hair textures, bodies and facial features. I celebrate every time I see more ordinary people represented in the media. I wish I could have grown up with significantly more diversity and representations of beauty. Thank you for speaking up and being an advocate.

As a nerd I saw up close all the backlash that Zendaya suffered when she was cast as MJ and that made me sick. It was clearly for racist reasons. I'm glad that today she is too busy winning an Emmy to give a f*ck about em.

This really tears up my heart. The shows that had black women at the forefront were always the best. That's So Raven, and now Raven's Home, are 2 of the best sitcoms ever made, and I will fight some on that lol I will never understand racism, or shaming a person for their size. It doesn't make any sense 😞 thank you for making this! Really well made video.

Creative control. Corporations like Disney, Nickelodeon who are dominantly white in production will market to majority white audience. Hence why there is only a handful of tv shows / sitcoms on those networks with an all black / biracial cast. Give black / biracial creatives freedom to create ANYTHING and they will reach such great heights but instead the execs and production cast will downplay them saying they wont sell or do high numbers which is a lie.
