Why Was Johnny Cash So "Hurt"?
We all know that his version of "hurt" was one of johnny cash´s last songs. But what we all don't know is that it was originally written by Trent #Reznor from the band "Nine Inch Nails" and was recorded first in 1994. Cash's version came out in 2002.
At that time, Cash's health was declining rapidly and he knew that his so long, and exemplary music career was coming to an end. Some of the references in the song clearly related to his life, like depression, self-harm, and drug addiction.
Ask anyone to name a song that has the power to reduce them to tears, and the chances are they'll reply “Johnny #Cash #Hurt.” Let's dive today into one of country music's greatest rebels and explore the story behind the saddest song ever.
Here, we talk about tales of music that your school classes probably never covered. In here, you will find discussions about some of the world's greatest artists, stories about their personal life and the untold weird parts of their history!

“The saddest music video of all time.” How could someone make a such bullshit sweeping statement? Have he seen all the sad music videos from Asia, Latin and South America and Africa? Western-centrism and narrow-mindedness is the only explanation for such a statement.

Trent Reznor is quoted as saying “the song belongs to him now” after seeing the powerful music video. NIN closes every concert with Hurt, it’s a masterpiece and that is why Cash was attracted to it.

I don’t think you feel what he feels. This song is a testament to a successful man with money and fame letting you know he’s unhappy at the end bc all his loved ones are gone at the end. Telling us all those times he chose his music career to better his life he regrets it all and would trade all those moments for memories of his loved ones that he held off so many times bc if his fame and music hunger.

I am too young to really appreciate the work and of times of Johnny Cash. However, I found this particular video purely by chance, and was tempted to either fast-forward through most of it, or just move away and find a far more appropriate song for my tastes. But for whatever reason, I watched the video in full, and OMG it drew me in so quickly. Cash's fragile voice gripped my heart, and the pounding guitar strings and piano hit me like someone beating on my soul. I never knew the man, his songs or his career. And yet after listening to this song I feel like I've known him all my life, just like a distant uncle. I cry when I play this song. I really don't know why, but I cry and cry. Whether this is a sad song or a reflection on his career, it matters not to me because I absolutely adore it, and has taught me to live life and appreciate it to the full before its all too late. Thank you, Johnny (and his wife). RIP xx

Correct, Johnny didn't even like the idea at first because the genre was so far away from him. Rick Rubin was the one who wanted to do it and even had a hard time convincing Cash. Also Trent Reznor didn't "warm up" to the idea but rather downplayed the choice for himself by thinking the song would just be one of hundreds cover songs done by Cash so he actually didn't care too much about it.

This is a great video. When you mentioned that his wife was looking into the distance, I thought that she was lovingly looking at him, seeing his pain and feeling sympathetic, which was sadly ironic since her passing was close to the filming. It also seems a bit ironic that about halfway in between their deaths was the last time he did a live performance. I love some of his music, but I have to say Hurt was definitely my favorite. Even though it was a cover, Trent Reznor himself said that it became his song when he watched the music video.

When this video came out onto MTV it was not only daunting to Johnnys life & June's but, a end to an entire era being not long after MTV began reality shows the music videos had begun being played less it surely put a end to the old celebrities as well as my generation Baby Boomers had now been nearing 40s I can honestly say despite where Technology is today there will never be another time to have been alive on earth than the 60s throughout the 90s " Never " the things today are so isolated its scarey . I myself never thought I'd be speaking like my late grandparents, parents , aunts & uncles on that note I'll end with life is short before you know it your old sure we say enjoy it while you can but by the time you get to retire your torn and turned grey lucky to have a few yrs to enjoy your fruits of labor. Enjoy your life every minute is precious.. Wherever, the Cashs are I sure hope its as beautiful as promised. Amen 🖤🙏🏻🖤 Thank you for doing this video . 🤘🤘🤘

Thanks for the video, but there are a few common misconceptions that you might want to correct in the interest of accuracy. The "House of Cash"---despite the misleading name---was never lived in by any of the Cash family. It was an unauthorized museum in Hendersonville, Tennessee, devoted to the life and work of Johnny Cash. Cash and his wife lived nearby at 200 Caudill Drive in Hendersonville, TN, which was his lakeside home from 1968 until his death in 2003. Also, the "House of Cash", the setting for much of the "Hurt" video, did not burn down, but his real home did; in accordance with Cash's will, his long-time home at 200 Caudill Drive was sold after his death in 2003. Barry Gibb of Bee Gees fame purchased the property; while it was under renovation it burned down in an accidental fire in 2007. The official, authorized museum dedicated to Johnny Cash is located in Nashville. It opened in 2013. To complicate things a bit further, there's another place dedicated to the life and music of Johnny Cash called the Storytellers Hideaway Farm and Museum, located in Bon Aqua, TN; it opened in 2016 on the former 107-acre farm of Cash's. Again, your video was interesting, but I think a re-recording of the narration might be something to consider.

Thank you for those clarifications. It did seem odd while watching the otherwise excellent doc when the narrator mentioned that Johnny and June lived in the House of Cash for 30+ years -- as a roadside attraction in disrepair, it did not appear to be the home of music legends with a big family that loved the outdoors. Of course hearing that their real home burned down is even more depressing than hearing the House of Cash did. All that said, it was a great documentary about an amazing video. It is sad, of course, as a tale of decisions made and regretted, but the choices you make form who you are as a whole. You can always second-guess them, but they are the fabric of your existence. We all crumble to dirt, and we all will lose many of those we love if we live long enough, but there is always hope and memories -- and if we're lucky, some younger family and friends -- to sustain us. At least that's what I hope as a man about to turn 55 and send my last kid off to college.

So amazing, I didn't know about June, that's sad.. I just remember enjoying seeing her in the video in real time as well as in many decades ago in the flashbacks during. Just her look as she stands over \ behind him, something raw and could not be acted anyone. Quick take... NIN being one of my all time favs too especially since Trent is so freaking talented, IN THE NIN VERSION< TRENT WROTE THE SONG FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A YOUNG EARLY 20's HEROIN ADDICT DEALING WITH LOSS AND EITHER SUBCONC OR EMOTIONALLY PUSHING PEOPLE AWAY> ITS MEANT TO SHOW HOW HARD IT IS SO EARLY IN LIFE TO LOOK FOR A BETTER WAY WHEN THINGS ARE BLEEK> WHEN JOHNNY TWEAKED IT AND PUT A WHOLE LOT OF THAT NON FAKE JUST MOJO IN THIS IT WAS REVERESED< INSTEAD OF A YOUNG MAN TRYING TO LOOK ON A WAY FORWARD> ITS AN ELDERLY MAN LOOKING BACK ON HIS LIFE AT THE END AND FEELING SAD BUT ALSO ASHAMED. AT THE NEED FOR MATERIAL THINGS OR STATUS TRENT SAYS THIS WAY TOTALLY WORKED AND IT BECAME HIS SONG> LOVE YA JOHNNY KEEP HANK AND AARON AND ALL THEM COMPANY TIL WE MAKE IT UP THERE TOO ;) sorry hit caps lock and didny want to retype in lowercase, so there's that... anyone else get those almost teary moments from mainly the flashbacks or old films in this video too? or the dumping of the wine glass is pretty cool as he looks at the camera eye level and fwd.. I need to look up this director too awesome but I hated seeing them have to lift Johnny up just to film this, uber sad but thanks for this amazing song its already got me through quite a bit, ciao.

Johnny Cash didn’t just cover this song by NIN, he owned it. He then took it to his grave. It rests there with him now, where everyone we know, goes away in the end..

The music Videos for Johnny Cash’s Hurt and David Bowie’s Lazarus are some of the saddest, depressing and emotionally disturbing pieces of musical visual art in my opinion.

After hearing the story behind the music video, it makes its use in the first trailer for the 2017 movie Logan even more sense. In Logan, Wolverine's health was declining as his healing factor was getting weaker and for decades it was fighting Adamantium poisoning but by the end of the film Wolverine's healing factor was basically gone and he was mortality wounded by his clone X-24

If you want to know the saddest song I've ever known that's embodied most of the pain I've had in my life it's Atreyu moments Before Dawn give it a listen if you've ever been haunted all night and couldn't sleep or waited for someone to care who was never going to even waiting for yourself to care I played this song every morning at 4:00 a.m. didn't sleep a wink all night was drunk all day without touching a drink from the time I was 13 to the time I was 23 I was drinking myself to death

The background about him I already know. I'm 63. The other stuff the lady is narrating is not relative because she goes all over the place and speaks in question marks after every word????????????????? which is VERY Aggravating. She should narrate little girl books
