The OP seems like he is a “Level 1” autistic. His inability to separate “what is” and “what should be” is pretty telling. His guilt at his completely justified snap reactions is also indicative. He mentally/emotionally wants everyone, including himself, to follow the idealistic “script.” When reality doesn’t match the script, he spirals and try’s to retreat to it hoping things will fall back into place. It’s pretty sad.

So a rule you set for someone else. If it’s something you don’t tolerate people doing that will lead to consequences (leaving them) then that is a rule you are setting for them. I agree with your conclusion but the reasoning is flimsy.

⁠@@NoNo-xh7runot really. Setting a boundary dictates how you will act in a given situation, setting a rule is an attempt to dictate your partner’s behavior. The result may be the same (i.e. leaving a cheating partner) but the difference is who you are exerting control over.

@@NoNo-xh7ru No, I stand by it. Let me put it another way - like castle doctrines and trespassing laws. I'm not telling someone what to do when they're out in the world shopping or sporting or doing the television. I'm saying don't come on my property without my permission. Enjoy the world. It should be that simple for boundaries around relationships. It is not a boundary for me to say, "In order for us to be together you have to delete all social media." Nope. That's controlling BS. A boundary would be, "I do not date people with social media so we should not date." And if you're just figuring out, "I have figured out I cannot be on social media while dating, so this needs to change or we need to break up." That might not seem like it matters in terms of semantics, but it does. Telling someone what they can or can't do in a relationship with you is very different from saying we need to dissolve this if we can't come to an accord on a baseline level of respect.

The OP should NEVER have married her in the first place. With all the issues they had, they needed to work those out prior to marriage. A failed marriage and divorce was inevitable. It's almost like they asked for it by not doing the work and taking the time to see if the changes are real before they commited to a marriage.
